Hi-
It's been so long since you posted this I'm not sure if you'll see it, but I'm the great granddaughter of Melvin Allan Coffman, and thought I'd correct some of your info. Melvin married Ruth Beardsley and Kay Wasnich married their son Bill (my grandparents). If you'd like to share more info let me know!

It is dreadful disease. My father, his mother & her sister have all passed away from it. My grandmother's cousin has also been diagnosed with it, this is how I came to suspect it is from the Coffman line of my family vs. Alexander line. I wish I knew the names of John's siblings, but I haven't had any luck yet. I've only just begun my search tho.

My dumb bad, I was thinking Alzheimer's. Both makes some end up not talking to where one can understand them. My mom had Alzheimers and my cousin had ALS. I know the difference. I have actually had two first cousins to die from AlS, The afore mentioned Earl, on my Coffman father side, and a female cousin on my mothers side. Bothe were in their 60's to early 70's. Either illness no one wants.

My John b 1765 died in Mason County, WV. His father was Martin from Va. the two generations before that martin was in Lancaster PA, where the original 3 Kaufman brothers came from I think Hess county, Germany, now Bern Switzerland. All American Coffmans came from those brothers. I think their names are Johnus, Andreas, and Michael. I ancestor is Michael. Earl, my first cousin is the only Coffman I know that died from ALS., but I do have a G G grandfather, Lovell Coffman, who would be my John's grand son' who died from some form of dementia, as far as I know I suppose it is possibly ALS, which is a form of dementia. Dreadful illness at any rate. Hopefully no other Coffman's , or anyone for that matter, will ever get ALS

I've only recently start researching my family tree and haven't been able to trace past my g-g grandfather John Coffman yet.I have no idea how he came to be in Chattanooga, TN or where him and/or his family came from. I am curious to know if they are connected tho. So far I know of 4 of his descendants who were diagnosed with ALS.

"In general, ALS is a slowly progressive neurodegenerative disease producing weakness of the muscles. Almost any part of the body can be affected, including the muscles of the arms and legs, as well as those that control either speech, swallowing, or breathing. Some patients may also have minor either emotional, behavioral, or thinking problems. Most patients with ALS have fasciculations, which are involuntary painless muscle twitches. ALS patients have changes in their skin, making them resistant to getting bed sores. Eye movements and sensation are typically preserved. Pain is usually either nonexistent or minimal.
Persons with ALS are typically in their 5th or 6th decade of life. Both men and women are affected. Most often this disease occurs for unknown reasons (sporadic ALS), while about 5-10% of the time, the disease is inherited (familial ALS)" http://www.texasneurology.com/ALSCenter/
