Looking for Susannah Blosser who was the "ward of Jacob Coffman" at least until 6/2/1817 when she married Emanuel Grabill. Because of the "long s" she's been carried as "Blopes, etc." since the transcription of Shen Co. marriage records.

Hello,
I am trying to find Lydia's parents. She was born in VA in 1825 and married Samuel Sheets in 1850 in VA. They lived in Shenandoah County. Woodstock area? Lots of references to Narrow Passage Creek. There are trees on line that say her parents were George Coffman b 1779 VA and Catherine Heizey b 1784. I can find George & Catherine's 1803 marriage but no record of Lydia's (or any other child's)birth. There is another? Lydia Coffman (also b 1825)whose parents are Adolph Coffman and Barbara Rinker and she appears (according to all of the trees) to be a different Lydia. My Lydia lived past 1900 and the 'other' Lydia probably died in 1863. How can I find the right Coffman family? Does anyone know where I can find 1825ish Virginia births for Lydia and her siblings?
Thank you,
Maryann Flaherty

To my knowledge, none of the Coffman's in NE Texas were of Native American Lineage. They came from AL/TN in 1834 and all the Indians in the area were pretty hostile to Whites...
This would be the families of Lovell Coffman and James Coffman, oldest sons of Jacob Maryon Coffman of Cherokee Co. AL, formerly of Limestone & Marion Counties of AL, and Jefferson & Hamblen Counties of TN. Descendants of Markham MarshaLL Coffman also came to NE TX about the same time. Markham was the younger brother of Jacob Maryon. Their father was David Coffman who came to East TN when the Cherokees were hostile to the encroaching Whites. They should be on the Dawes Rolls if they were of that timeframe.
Fact is, Jacob was a soldier of the War of 1812-14 in Gen. Andy Jackson's East TN Militia who fought the British sponsored Cherokees at Horseshoe Bend of the Tennessee River in northern AL.

I havent heard back from a will BUT I have heard from a Browning decendent. Jane Browning married Nicholas Long and I heard back from one of thier decendance. It is looking good that Nicholas Browning is Mary Browning Coffman father. While there is still more digging to do IF Nicholas Browning IS Mary Browning Coffman father she indeed comes from the FIRST MARRIAGE between Nicholas Browning and Mary McKinney. Mary McKinney Browning died about 1830 just 5 years before Mary Browning marries Jesse J Coffman. ALL childern of Nicholas Browning and SECOND wife Margret would be Mary Browning Coffman s HALF SIBBINGS, same father so they would indeed be blood related to us with a common ancestor. Interesting to note Jesse J Coffman s SECOs Martha Browning WIDOW of John Browning. Take Care, Miss Robin

I also sent for Houston Browning Confederate militery and pention papppers HOPEING it will connect to our Mary. If they are all the childern of Nicholas Browning Jane and Mary are childern from the first marrige while Houston is from the second marriage and HIS mother is Margert. Now the waiting begans. That is great news that you found a death certificate for one of her children. My ancestor Elisha died before Arkansas began keeping them. Please keep us posted on what you find with the will. I did take the Family Finder DNA test and I match to some "Pitts" descendants from that area of AL, but they do not have a Mary Pitts in their records. I will keep an eye out for Browning matches.

Pat, I am checking on that. According to Elijah Coffman s death cerifcate his mother was Polie Browning wich would be a nickname for Mary. Also I just found a death year for Mary / Pollie s susposed father Nicholas Browning, so I am checking to see if he left a WILL. If he did, he died in 1855 so Mary should be named hopeful with her marrried name. IF I get lucky then Mary / Pollie was a daughter from Nicholas Browning s FIRST wife and Mary had many siblings from her mother AND step mom. Wish me luck, it s a puzzel. Take Care, Miss Robin

Why is it so hard to trace the ladies side of the family. I am trying to research the Bowning family that belongs to Mary / Pollie Browning married to Jesse J Coffman. Mary Browning born June 18, 1822 in Tn. Married Jesse J Coffman March 1835 in Tn or Al. Died May 7, 1863 in Limestone Co. Jesse J Coffman was a son of David Harmon Coffman Jr. I know I read somewhere that Nicholas Browning was Mary / Pollie s father..is there a wil oe esate settlement to prove the link. I found a Nicholas Browning liveing in Limestone Co, Al in 1850 cenus, born 1787 N.C. ,argrette age 42, several childern includeing Houston Browning born 1838. Nicholas seems to have died between 1850 and 1860 as Margret in liveing in the houshold of Houston Browning. Houston served in the Confederate Infantry and latter married in 1870, no Margret is listed in the 1870 cenus with him. The thing is..do I have the right Browning family. Houston died April 26, 1915 Limestone Co, AL. There is a Nicholas Bro!
wning listed in the 1820 Giles Co, Tn cenus. While Nicholas , if my Nicholas had several childern but Houston seems to be the most traceable IF he will only lead me back to Mary Browning Coffman AND thier parents. Has any one information on the Browning line. Do you know if I am traceing the right people. Thank you in advance. Miss Robin

I show he was married to a Jane Norwood in 1824 in Jefferson, Tenn. but I have not found any proof of it.
I have a Nancy Parmer married to him in Nov.16, 1830 and I believe a headstone picture for both her and Thomas if you are interested.
