Not as far as I know...Lovell's second son, Seabern Joseph Coffman was in CA, panning for Gold when the Civil War broke out...He hid out in the hills around Sacramento until he could get enough money together to come back home to Texas. He could have passed thru Mexico to get home. The Union was drafting every able-bodied man in CA and he didn't want to be faced with the possibility of having to fight his own brothers, two of which were killed; one at Shiloh, and the youngest died at a Memphis Hospital after being mortally injured at Pea Ridge AR. His older brother was a deaf-mute and exempted; the one just younger than him was crippled from being run over by a wagon when he was young. He was also exempted. I think S.J. served in the CSA Army upon his return to Texas.

Lorenzo Dow Coffman took his family to Mexico late in the Civil War. My ggrandmother, Mary Josephine, was born in Monterrey, Mexico in 1864. The was a M. Coffman that took the scooner from Monterry, Mexico to the U.S., I think maybe New Orleans, during the time that Dow Coffman was living there. Do you know if any of Lovell's children or grandchildren were in Mexico. A lot of Texans took cattle to Mexico during the Civil War.

No, Michele Brown has already done a Revision to "From Across the River", about five or six years ago...She was selling them for fifty dollars...<(micbrown144(a)Comcast.net)> Last contact I had with her she was living in CO, seems like Denver area...
I am currently working on a Library Edition of Addy Phillip's book "The Coffman Family 1777-1940" which deals with the Lovell & Cathryn Coffman Family of Red River County TX. I plan to print about 30 copies for distribution to Libraries in the affected area.
Lovell was the grandson of David H. Coffman and he migrated to Texas ca 1832-34 before the Texas Revolution. David's son Marshall Markham migrated to what is now Bowie County Texas about 1840, and Grandfather Lovell's brother, James, came to Upshur/Cass County about the same time...

Frances,
I apologize for mistakenly ref your query as Ms McDaniel's reply.
I am still looking for a possible match to your Peter Coffman with a bd of 1828 he would likely be in the line.
Do you know where your Mary Jane Coffmanb b. 1852 was born?
In E TN or Alabama? Most of David's folks had removed to Limestone county AL. or to Giles county TN.. or somewhere nearby.
regards,
J Green

Jerry ,
So many of the Coffmans from David's line migrated to TX.
I looked thru the Koffman books I have available and finally decided that there were so many Peters and Jacobs and Marys that I could not find one that fit the Ms McDaniel's request.
I posted and error re: the David Coffman Watchers link re: research..much of that was done by a Mary Ann Ricks.
Jerry,
Are you the person who was pondering a reprint of "Across the River" dealing with the David Coffman family?
regards,
J Green

Most all the Coffman family in Eastern TN are related to one of David Harmon Coffman and Mary Anne Lovell's children.
I know of a Peter Coffman b ca1852 in Red River County TX. He is the half-brother of my Grandmother Nona Coffman b1884 to James & Jane Coffman of Red River County. I do not know who he married, but his mother was Rachel Laboon, first wife of James Coffman, and he is named after her father, Peter Laboon Sr.

Lorenzo Dow Coffman was born 1818 in Giles County, Tenn. His mother was Mary Young, and I do not know who his father was. On the 1880 census he says both of his parents were born in N.C. On the 1845 state census of Tishimingo County, Miss. she appears to be living with him. All of the neighbors around them in 1845 are the same who were around her in 1850, and she has a young woman living with her, who I assume is a granddaughter. Some of the same people are in McNairy Co., Tenn. in 1840. Most of the records were destroyed so it is hard to find any info. I live in Texas but went to McNairy last spring and was told everything had burned.
Jacob Free Coffman married a Young also, and I wonder if she would be kin to Mary Young Coffman. We have tried for years to find the family of Lorenzo Dow Coffman. He is not kin to the Dows, he is named for the preacher Lorenzo Dow. They were all Hard Shelled Baptists. He married Sarah Waldrip. One of her brothers, Thomas Waldrip, lived to be 107 and was Hard Shelled Baptist preacher.

Hello
If you have a bit more information regarding Mary Coffman and who her spouse or parents would be it would help.
I have looked thru my Coffman files and there are easily 60 or more Coffman girls named Mary. Most of these are born either in Giles county TN or Limestone or a nearby county in AL?
My McNairy Koffman family had a Mary Koffman who married a Hicks...
no other Koffman named Mary until the 1860's and she married a Nicholson in Gibson county TN.
Have you looked at the Dow's or the Waldrips. They were proably in laws. The best bet would be to discover who Mary's father was? How did she descend in the David H Coffman family?
best,
J Green

I am interested in the Koffmans who moved to McNairy Co., Tenn. Some of my Coffmans were also in McNairy and later moved down to Tishimingo Co., Miss. Mary Coffman was in McNairy Co. in 1840, and I believe she was the mother of Lorenzo Dow Coffman (Kaufman). In 1850 she was in Tishimingo Co., Miss. but Dow Coffman had moved to Texas with the Waldrips.

Gerry,
I appreciate your taking the time to educate me regarding the grants. I have seen where David Coffman was given land for Rev. War service and had some record from DAR re: same...don't know where it is at the moment. I know individuals have joined DAR and SAR with him as ancestor of record? At any rate I have enough "Patriots" to go around a few times.
I know the Coffman/Kauffman/Koffmans were originally Mennonite in York and Lancaster PA becuase I have two grandmothers one a Coffman the other a Koffman. They migrated thru Rockingham county after leaving PA and then settled in Dandridge and around Jonesborough. They lived in Jefferson and Washington , and nearby counties before moving farther south. David Coffman and his family moved to Limestone county in Alabama. My Koffman family came to McNairy county in TN down the TN river on flatboats.
I am sure as they moved farther and farther away from any Mennonite presence they did in fact turn to the primitive Baptist or Baptist religion. This would also be a normal response to intermarriage with those of other faiths.
best,
James
