Greetings! I'm trying to track down any info on my ancestor James Coffman, born 1765 in Rockhingham, VA; died 1841, Jefferson, TN.
There are at least 8 family trees on Ancestry.com that show his father being a Cornelis (Cornelius?) Koopman, but no one has any sources attached, and I'm trying to prove this link. (Frankly I don't quite believe it to be accurate, because supposedly our family name was originally spelled Kauffman or Khoufmann, not Koopman, but obviously I'm open to being corrected if the Koopman link can be proven.)
More info on James Coffman: He and wife Priscilla (maiden name unknown) had the following children:
i. Joseph (1790-1845)
ii. Anna. Born in 1796.
iii. Nancy (1797-)
iv. Susannah (1798-1851)
v. John. Born on 3 Jul 1804 in Jefferson County, Tennessee.
Many thanks for any leads!

>From what I can tell this seems to be a better narrative of a shooting. I have been lead to believe that Isophena's first husband was murdered by a lover? and that a child was a also killed in the process. Do you know if the book you got the information from can be loaned to libraries? The attachments you sent are good but my eyes are poor ;) maybe to much time on the computer. HA! Thank you for this lead. Any chance we may be related distantly?

Thank you so much. This is critical info for "sourcing" the data.

Please post source for the pages. Include title, author, publication date. This will be needed for storing the data should any information match an ancestor. ~ Coffman Message Board Administrator.

This will be trickier as the genetic genealogy community is figuring out how best to utilize the information provided by 23andMe. The principal is shown in this animation. www.smgf.org/education/animations/autosomal.jspx We identify short shared segments of DNA between 2 individuals. The more closely related they are the more segments one shares and the longer they are.
In your case your mother would get tested and you would see what cousins are identified within 23andMe. There are some additional analysis projects that are run outside of 23andMe where we take look at more of the raw data to develop the genealogical relationship. I run one of the larger projects supporting the Amish/Mennonite/Reformed/Brethren communities. We have 6 Kauffman/Coffman's participating from the 2 primary immigrant family lines. There were a lot of Kauffman's that became Coffman and we lost track of them as they expanded westward out of PA and VA.
Based upon what you know about your genealogy it would be a good thing to also test several Coffman 2nd cousins to increase the odds of identifying another unknown Coffman relative. Time and $$$$. Note test the OLDEST individuals that you can since the DNA gets diluted with each generation. Right now 23andMe has their holiday sale going. email me off-line for more details wkauffman -at- yahoo.com

Hello:
My mother is a Coffman and she is an only child. Her only relative that I have any knowledge of is that of a female cousin. How can I use DNA to help with this line?
BTW, my maternal line is as follows:
Betty J Coffman (b OR)--> Grover Cleveland Coffman (b Johnson Co MO 1892, d Wasco Co OR 1956)--> Thomas Coffman (b Johnson Co MO 1870, d Multnomah Co OR 1942).
Thank you.

To get an idea of which Coffman/Kauffman line you are associated with you may want to consider y-DNA testing of one of your brothers or a related male Coffman. The best project for studying Coffman's via DNA is run at FamilyTreeDNA No guarantee's that a match will be found but it is worth narrowing down the field to someone else's researched line.
