For Gloria and Jerry ... you actually know more about that generation of Coffman's than I do. Mine were farmers. In fact farming was in EVERY generation from my dad back to Abraham. It was my generation that broke away from the farm.
Now my Abraham named a son John Henry but he ALWAYS went by Henry. In fact I find that the males often went by their middle names. Which makes me wonder about Abraham?
Maybe he was XXX Abraham but the records are showing XXX.
I'm also leaning back into thinking that the Margaret Triplett mentioned in my Abraham Coffman's will (his wife) was his second wife. I find no Triplett's in the area of Virginia (Shenandoah) that he came from ... but there are a bunch in Hardin County, KY. So it is quite possible he migrated to Hardin County and his first wife (Margaret Howey)[there is a marriage record for that] died not long after the move.
But I can't find a marriage record for Abraham Coffman (no matter WHAT spelling you use) or a Margaret Ann Triplett.
So I know what you mean by the brick wall. But I broke through one on my mother's side (just one generation break through but a break through is a break through) this year. So let's just keep hacking away and sharing with each other. Who knows what tidbit someone says and it opens a door ... that's what happened on my maternal side.

Hi,
My ancestor, Jacob Coffman, presumably a descendant of an early Kaufman family from Germany, settled in Smithfield, PA near Uniontown(?) in the mid-1700's (according to Nettie Cooper's "History of Prospect Valley"). Cooper reported that Jacob and his wife (name unknown) had four boys and four girls. The Mormon Ancestral File gives Jacob's birth date as 1749. His only known son is Henry Coffman who moved to Harrison Co., WV area near Clarksburg ca 1800. There he married 22 Jan 1804 Elizabeth Robinson and raised 11 children, all of whom are well documented. However, I've never been able to find any additional information on Jacob Coffman, his wife, or children and am wondering if Jacob could have been from the Smithfield located near Huntingdon, PA (Mifflin Co.) instead of the Smithfield in Fayette Co., PA? Henry owned a cooper shop on Robinson Run (near Lumberport, Harrison Co., WV) where he made and sold barrels. He also owned a sawmill nearby. Sorry, but the names !
you mentioned in your post are not in my known Coffman family. But any information you have that might remove my stone wall would be much appreciated.

I know that my Kauffman family descended from Germany and were barrel makers. Is this where your family possibly came from.

Discussing W C Coffman this book states that Isaac Coffman was a native of Maryland and Annie Coffman (French) was from Scotland. It also says that they were among the pioneers of Hopkins County.
The book can be found on Google book search. W C Coffman's biography is on page 145 and there is a picture of W C Coffman and Mrs Martha Coffman (Ashby) his wife.

I know what you mean, I have been in contact with 'cousins' that go back to Isaac Sr. but no one knows anything prior to him and Annie. One of these days I hope to get up to Pa. to look around. I have had my dna tested but that did not help much, I have had distant connections but nothing that can help me find out about Isaac Sr. or prior. As for the C.F. Fahs book, I have scanned the entire book and made about half of it a searchable pdf file. I haven't worked on it for over a year, it still requires a lot of work and proofing. I figured that was the quickest way to search the book. I will eventually go back to it unless someone beats me to it, in that case I will abandon my project.

I have seen this also, that is what I had for Annie until I received a post from another Coffman informing me about Scotland, Pa.. I thought about it awhile and decided that Scotland, Pa. was more logical than the country. I could go into the train of thought that made me decide that but it would take a while. If you wish, I will tell you about it. At the present, I live about 80 miles from Scotland, Pa. and I will try to find out what county and what the county seat are so that I can make a trip to scrounge for info.. I don't know when that will be since I am now retired and I do not have time for anything other than retirement stuff and the new house that we bought. If I find anything I will post it on this thread or start a new thread, in any case, I will post the info..

There are a lot of Coffman's that came into MO via KY. My ancestor MAY be found in the famous C.F.Kauffman book but I certainly don't fit into the standard Kauffman/Coffman line. [See the recent posts re Abraham Coffman .. that's my lineage.)
I can identify with your brick wall. There's Abraham's parents. His wife (and maybe two wifes). Then I've got a brick wall on the maternal side of the family. I think there is always a brick wall some place unless you finally reach a spot where you say "done, not doing any more." And I don't see myself doing that for some time.
My Coffman's came into Grundy County, Missouri about 1862 lineage is Abraham, Harmon, Lewis, Alva, then my dad.

Needing information regarding this Coffman. According to the 1870 Rolling Fork, Casey Co., KY census dated 8-26-1870, Jacob Coffman age 65 born in TN is listed with wife Nancy age 30 and children James L age 10, Price (I think this should be Pryor) age 8, Nancy A age 6 and Jane P age 4 mos. Also found him on the 1880 District #5, Casey Co., KY census dated 6-14/15-1880, Jacob Coffman age 74 born in TN along with wife Nica Doss age 41 and children James L age 19, Prior W.R.L. age 16, Nancy A age 14, Salley E.D.J. age 10, Warren W.B.J.L. age 4 and Eric Neli S age 4 mos.
These are some of the questions I have: Was this Coffman truly born in Tennessee? Who were his father and mother? How many times was he married? Who were his wifes? How many children did he have? Which wife were these children by?
If you have information on this Coffman I would love to hear from you, you can email me directly at 1969mets(a)sbcglobal.net
Thanks,
Dave Cole

Hi Wallace,
I am a Coffman who has been researching the family line for several years. I would be glad to share information on the Isaac/Annie line. However, I am also at a brick wall regarding Isaac and Annie's lineage.
Our Isaac doesn't seem to fit into the Charles Fahs Kauffman book on the family nor can I find any parental lineage for him.
Until your post I have not seen Annie listed as being born in Scotland, Pennsylvania. I have always seen her listed as born in Scotland (the country). Your post has provided a new direction for my search.
I come through the Isaac, Isaac Jr, James Robert, Gustavus line of the family. From PA to KY to MO.

There was a Langston family on my Coffman/Ramey line near Springfield, MO. which is near Joplin. My great grandfather was George Martin Coffman, son of Noah Whitehouse Coffman/Kauffman(Shenandoah Valley-Ohio-Clinton, Iowa). George took his family, after my grandmother, Lucy Alice, was born in Iowa in 1860, south into Texas, then back to MO., where Lucy married my grandfather William Henry Ramey(he always went by the name of Henry). They lived in the Springfield area on a small farm and he worked in the railroad machine shop. I think it was grandmother's sister, Pearl, who married a Langston. Cousins?

Triplett, Pery to Elizabeth Hunt--9-15-1847 (9-16-1847)
McMinn Co.
Triplett, Thomas to Nancy Davis--8-22-1839 Monroe Co.
Triplett, William R. to Nancy Pottwood--12-15-1865
(12-15-1865) Anderson Co.
I hope you can find a relative in these names, because these counties are so close to the Cumberland Gap that the Boone's used on their trip into KY. Several families went with him as settler's. During the Revolution, some left their homesteads, temporarily, to fight the Brittish, but returned when they could. There was a big fight over their leaving their homes, but it was finally settled.Others tried to take their land away from them--Johnny-come-lately types.

Wow! She has a strong feeling about it obviously. But some folks want "private" stuff to stay private and they don't understand that it can. I know my dad used to say, "Be Careful! You're liable to find a horse thief back there!" About the 3rd or 4th time he said it, I said -- that would be cool! [I know == that dates me.]
I told him that I could not help who my ancestors were. I could only help the person I was and hopefully be a good parent and grandparent. By the way, never have found a horse thief or any thief for that matter.
One of the interesting things I'm just beginning to rethink the female part of the lineage. I know it was a Triplett because she is listed in his will. But I have recently found some more info and I think the Triplett marriage was a second marriage for Abraham Coffman.
There is a record marriage of an Abraham Cauffman and a Margaret Howey in Shenandoah VA. I actually found some of this 10 years ago but over time never could find anything other than someone who "thought it might be". But there is more data out there now -- so I now think it may be a possibility that Margaret Howey died. Perhaps in 1801 or 1802. And then he married Margaret Triplett.
I find Triplett's in Hardin County KY but not many in VA and the women found, the marriage info and their death. The Triplett's were in KY before the 1800s. And they lived, according to the census, in the same area as Abraham did. Howey's were in VA and were in KY before Abraham moved there. So it's possible the reason he DID go to KY was because of his in-laws.
Anyway, I'm doing a re-think and trying to collect the data and try to make a sense of the potential timeline.
If I find "Maude Triplett" in my research, I'll do my best to get the info to you.

Too bad an in-law of mine hasn't traced her family back--her paternal grandmother was Maude Triplett. The in-law lives in north central Idaho. If she had done it and had run into the Coffman line, it might have solved the problem. I wouldn't dare ask her, because I was telling my son about some of our family, and she literally told me to shut up about it. So I never discuss genealogy in her presence. Actually, she just came to us and butted into our private conversation; but we were standing in her driveway, so I guess she felt she had the right. Iris
