Hello, I'm pretty new at all this, but I've been working on my Coffman
geneology for the past several months, and I know everyone else is looking for their
own information, but I've hit a wall that has been running me in circles for
months now, and any help that might be out there would be greatly
appreciated....
I'm looking for info on a James H. Coffman that was born sometime around
1833. I have one census record from 1880 that has him living in Indianapolis, but
I'm pretty sure he moved there from Kentucky, probably right after the Civil
War. I also have evidence that he may have changed the name which had
previously been spelled Kauffman. He was married to a Martha E. McFall (1841?) in
1880 but also may have been married before her. He for sure had a son named
Frederick Smith Coffman born in 1872.
I appreciate any help. Thanks.
-Adam Coffman

You know -- that gives me hope.
On my genealogy site -- my name variations page I have a link that you might be interested in. Although with the amount of info you have given me, you probably already know of it. http://www.ancestors-genealogy.com/coffmanpeach/nameVariations.shtml
I'll look for those books! Thank you SO much!!!

If his name happened to be Johannes/Hans (John) Abraham Coffman, then he would likely go by Abraham, as his "called name" (Rufnom).
I looked for 50 years for my gg-grandfather as "Samuel," when his name was written James S. or J.S. for James Samuel in many instances...uninformed, I kept overlooking it...The family all said his name was Samuel, but no one apparently knew it was James, at least the ones who were still alive when I started doing research...I found the explanation about Fornom and Rufnom in THE EBENEZER RECORD BOOK, 1754-1781, translated by Dr. Geo. F. Jones and Sheryl Exley. It has nothing to do with Coffman's but does give insight into the culture of German immigrants. Other books that give info are THE SALZBURGER SAGA, and THE GEORGIA DUTCH, both by Dr. Jones. They may be available in your local Library.

Did they also tend to scribe the names though as firstname lastname and not by the real named they were called? So Johannes or John Coffman would be written but he went by Abraham Coffman?

An Abraham Kaufman ( might have a double f) was a Mennonite ministerin the Shenandoah Valley. The family went into the valley with Jacob Stover abt 1735/6. They used the White House meeting bldg as a church. My connection was his son Martin, who married Sarah Whitehouse in Rockingham Co.,VA. Be aware the German names did some radical changes. By the time my Kaufman family went to OH, then Clinton Co, IA. The name bacame Coffman. Some of the other German names from that area were Slater/Slaughter--Bauman/Bowman and several others which became anglisized. Iris Seyfried grandmairis1(a)yahoo.com

Can anyone send me a list of children of the subject couple above. I'm trying to connect them to my ancestor Jacob Coffman, b. ca 1749 (perhaps in Smithfield, PA area). I originally found the information on Jacob M. Coffman & his wife on Ancestry.Com. My Jacob reportedly had 4 sons and 4 daughters and one of the sons was named "Henry" or perhaps "Henry John." Appreciate your help very much.
