They were not quakers that I know of....I believe Robert was from the
Shenandoah Valley area...I think N.P. Creek is. what it states in the
records...but that is the same area. I haven't traced my Young line very
far back yet....I'm not actually sure where that line leads...

I'm looking for information on a Jacob Coffman, b.11/14/1831,
The 1860 census shows him being born in Virginia.
He married and raised his family in Terre Haute, Indiana.
m. Jane Bradford in 1855.
Family records show that Jacob's family was Pennsylvania Dutch.
Jane's parents were John Clinton Bradford and Mary Harper.
Mary's brother was John M. Harper b. 7/19/1816 in Cincinnati, Franklin County
Ohio. The Harper family goes back to Thomas Harper founder of the historic
Town of Harper's Ferry, named so after his son Robert.
I just received a picture of Jane Bradford Coffman's Wedding Day 1855,
In the mail today, and can share it with anyone who might have a family
Connection to Jacob and Jane Coffman.

I am seeking information about Samuel Lewis who lived in Monroe County, PA.
I am writing a history of the Nauman family of Monroe County, PA.
Samuel Lewis lived in Monroe County, PA and was a Nauman descendant.
His direct Nauman descendancy follows.
Sarah Nauman (~1810->1880) and Jacob (1806-1876) Coffman
Erwine (1831->1910) and Matilda ??????? (1830-<1900) Coffman
Emeline Coffman (1861->1930) and Thomas (1844->1920) Lewis
Samuel Lewis (1894-19??)
His World War I draft registration shows that Samuel had a wife and a child.
In the 1920 Census Samuel is with his parents and reported to be married
In the 1930 Census Samuel is with his mother and reported to be divorced.
Who were the wife and child or children of Samuel Lewis? Did he have
grandchildren?
Samuel has sisters, Ethel (Born in 1889) and Gladys (Born in 1897). Whom did
Ethel and Gladys marry? Did they have children and grandchildren?
What was Matilda’s maiden name?
Any information would be gratefully received. I will share what I know about this
Family.
Could you clarify what "them" refers to, that is does it refer to Margaret
and Emma, or to Erasmus and Margaret. Also, a clue as to where they were
in 1880 and 1900 would save a few days searching to get the material you
are referring to. I may be related to them, but the number of Coffmans
associated with Shenandoah Co., VA is so great that I have a long search
ahead of me before I make the confirmed connections of the Shenandoah
Valley Coffmans to mine in Maryland. More info, better chance of finding
supporting information.
Thank you.

The name Fravel has a familiar ring. Have you anything more on her. My
Coffmans were in Virginia (later West Virginia). I smell a possible
connection although I don't have a definite link to western Ohio or the
Ohio-Indiana border. I had a line that went to Missouri (actually serveral
of them) and then retrieted as far as Illinois. There were many Coffmans
in the Shenandoah valley and several of those appear to have gone to
Greenbriar county in (now) West Virginia also.

I am trying to locate info on Erasmus Coffman's children, one of them was my great great grandmother, I believe it was a daughter named Luvinia, but am not sure. Both Erasmus and Margaret were born in Shenandoah County, VA.
I think Luvinia had a child out of wedlock named Emma (my great grandmother) but I can not find any records. I have found them on the 1880 Federal Census and the 1900 Federal Census has them listed with two granddaughters and two grandsons.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
The names are right, but the places aren't. Dow Coffman says his parents were both born in N.C., if he really knew, and I would assume that they would have been married between 1800 and 1818, as he was born 1818/19.
I seem to have a vague memory of seeing the marriage of Catherine Young and Robert Coffman somewhere. Were they Quakers? I have found a lot of Coffmans who were Quakers and later became Hard Shell Baptist ministers. When I think about seeing them Quaker comes to my mind.
The story of my life has been that if a courthouse was going to burn, my ancestors made a bee line for it so all of the records could be destroyed. It is a shame that the 1820 census of Giles Co., Tenn. is not in existance, or the part they were on is unreadable. Seems like is the case from what I remember.

That sounds really great. Lorenzo Dow, he went by the name Dow, was with a Robert Coffman in Tippah County, Miss. in 1840. Dow married Sarah Waldrip in Tishimingo Co., but back then you had to marry in the county the girl lived in. They were actually married in Alcorn, which is no longer in Tishimingo County. Did Caroline die? Robert Coffman is all through our Coffman line. His oldest son was named Lafayette Coffman.

grandaughter of Robert E. Coffman.... my dad.... Robert E. Funkhouser was
named after him...

Although the Jacob Coffman that I knew was married to a Catherine Nester
and appears to have remained in Randolph (subsequently Barbour) county, Va
(WV) until he died. The name Jacob was certainly found among some of his
brothers' families. Can you provide any more specific location in VA
associated with your Jacob Coffman. The names Coffman, Myers and Rogers
were all found in Randolph+Harrison counties, Va (WV). And moves from that
area to IA were very common from 1840 through 1860.

Han anyone ever come across a Coffman -Young marriage? Lorenzo Dow Coffman was born 1818 in Giles Co., Tenn. and his parents were supposed to have been a Coffman and his mother a Young. According to the 1880 census he says both of his parents were born in N.C. I have searched and search and can not find one. He bought land from George Washington Coffman in Frio County, Texas. I have tried to connect them but no luck so far. He was with a Robert Coffman, wife Elizabeth, in 1840 in Miss. He married Sarah Waldrip in 1842 in Tishimingo Co., Miss and they moved to Texas by 1846. Any info would be appreciated.
According to the 1812 tax list, Isaac Coffman and Leveal Coffman were in Giles Co.

Has anyone out there heard of a Jacob Coffman who married Katherine Myers ?
Katherine was born in VA, in 1818 to John Lewis Myers and Sarah (Sally)
Rogers (Rodgers). They all moved to IA. around 1852.
Jacob is very hard to find after the move to IA.
Don Myers
Thank you for the details. I'll see what I can find. Your Sallie would
likely have been born no later than 1883 which makes it possible she is
descended from some of my Coffmans that went to Missouri. My line began in
Maryland is so far as yet proven. Some of the children of at least three
of his family (George, Michael and William) went to Missouri, starting
probably in the 1840s, and continuing one or two at a time until William
and his wife Elizabeth finally followed about 1775 from the glowing reports
they received from their children. Apparently they were not all so happy
with the life after a few years and many eventually went all the way to the
coastal states. Finding many of them has proved very difficult, but we
have leads on a few of them.
Thanks again for the detail. I hope I can find something useful to both of
us.

Would you be willing to share what you discovered regarding the ancestors of your Sally Coffman. I have ancestors and several cousins that went to Missouri at different times. One had a daughter Sarah (not married to Martin so far as I know) so this Sally (Coffman) Martin might be one of my lost lines.
Thanks.
