I have a Henry Coffman in my family - born March 31, 1865.
e-mail me for more info if this is yours.
Christine,
I'm wondering if your Coffman line connects to my family in Smithfield, Fayette Co., PA or Harrison Co., WV. My ancestor Jacob Coffman (b. ca 1749) had 4 sons and 4 daughters in the Smithfield, PA area and the only son I have been able to trace is my 3rd great grandfather Henry Coffman (b. ca 1782 in PA; d. Nov 1862 in Harrison Co., WV). He moved to that county ca 1800 and married Elizabeth Robinson there in Jan. 1804. Any information on Jacob Coffman and his family in Pennsylvania or Europe (prob. Germany or Switzerland) would be greatly appreciated.
Jerry Coffman

I don't know if they would be interested in contacting you, but I am glad I found you. I have been doing genealogy for about 8 months now. I am doing the Coffman and Hopper families for my children. I'm glad you are doing genealogy. If you don't have any objection, I would like to know what your aunt Lavita's marr. name was and what Lynette's marr name was. Also, what happened to Tawny?

I am probably the researcher that has information posted wrong. My husbands father is Harlan Edwin "Eddie" Coffman born 7/25/31. His father is Henry Harlan Coffman born on 11/15/08. I believe he is the sister of your grandmother "Dollie". My father in law left home when he was very young and does not really know alot of accurate details. Do you have any information on Harlan Edwin's mother? Can you please share any info that you have? I would greatly apprectiate it.

You can get a copy by writing to the archives at Athens, Alabama
(Limestone Co.) The genealogy section of a public library would be able to give you
a correct mailing address. It was recorded in Will Book 4, pages 475-477,
Probate Records.

Most of what you have said seems to come from Cousin Addie Phillip's book, THE COFFMAN FAMILY TREE, 1777-1940.
The story about the disinheriting relates to James Coffman, 3rd son of Jacob Maryon Coffman and Nancy Walker.
The spelling was changed much earlier than this instance. Records show that David Harmon Coffman's father was Andreus Kauffman, according to the Kaufman/Coffman Family book available from the Lancaster County Mennonite Society in PA. The logical reason for the change between Andreus and David was that they wanted to be 'accepted' in their new homeland of English speaking inhabitants. In short, it was 'Anglicized' by the British scrivnors who wrote/copied the documents....with little protest.
