Looking for information on William E. Coffman, born Maryland c. 1816; married Elizabeth Vanpelt 1850. They had 2 sons - Samuel B. Coffman and William H. Coffman. The family appears in the 1860 Rockingham Co. census. Beginning in 1870 William is missing from the census - only Elizabeth and
children remain. This William *may* have been involved with the "underground railroad" in Rockingham Co. I would be interested in corresponding with any descendants.

Let's get some timelines down:
Fact: My great-great-great-grandfather (Richard) Harmon Coffman was born in 1802 in Virginia.
Fact: Abraham Coffman makes out a will and mentions all his living children. Will: http://www.ancestors-genealogy.com/coffmanpeach/abrahamcoffmanwill.shtml
Fact: Census findings has this particular Coffman family in the Hardin, KY area for several decades.
Conjecture: based on census, date of birth for for Abraham is 1764.
Conjecture: His father would have to be born by 1744 in order to have a son in 1764. At the time of Abraham's birth the family was in Virginia. Abraham wasn't born in KY and neither was my g-g-g-grandfather. Both were born in VA.
So this Andrew is unlikely to be Abraham's father if the statements that he was in TN, KY, MO -- Abraham was born and lived in VA. He moved to KY within the first decade of 1800.
So what Coffman [or Kauffman or whatever spelling] was in the Page County area of Virginia in the late 1700s and had a son named Abraham?
Many of the Coffman's in that region did not get off their ships and go immediately to VA. Most were in PA and migrated down into VA. Was "my Abraham" part of that early church? There's so much documentation there why isn't Abraham listed. Maybe he had a falling out with the church? The mind can just go zipping off into all sorts of imaginative ideas.
Now there is an Andrew Coffman listed in VA in the 1810 census. Along with George Coffman. But by this time my Abraham would be in KY.
There is an Abraham & Jacob Coffman in Bourbon Co., KY in 1810 -- these are not my ancestors. At least I can find no connecting dots between what I know for sure and their line.
Anyway, I'm not discounting totally an Andrew Coffman connection but haven't found those magic connecting dots.

One other question. Your statement "He traveled between Ky,Tn,and Mo and had a wife in all three states" ... The "He" is right after Andrew Coffman but I think you meant that it was Abraham who have a wife in 3 states. Can you clarify?

This is something I had not heard before so it gives me a whole new direction for my research. And a wife in all 3 states! Wow! I'll start doing some heavy research into that area. Look for another reply to this message. I'll start a web page for the compiled info on my web site. http://www.ancestors-genealogy.com/coffmanpeach/
Many thanks for the info.

I believe that his father was Andrew Coffman. He traveled between Ky,Tn,and Mo and had a wife in all three states. As far as I ca determine, he was born in TN and was the father of Andrew . His father was also named Andrew and a direct descendant of Lohannes Kauffman born in Switzerlanin 1617.

I've been through every Abraham and Abram I could find of any form of Kauffman that was in the 'A genealogy and history of the Kauffman-Coffman families of North America, 1584 to 1937' book.
This Abraham was born about 1764 supposedly in Shenandoah Co., VA. Now he really couldn't have been since that didn't become a county in 1772 but it does give us the area of VA. He died in Elizabethtown, Hardin Co., KY in 1849. I have 13 children born to him. Wife was Margaret Triplett. I used to think it was a Hawn or Howey. I no longer believe that to be the case.
Does anyone have an insight -- even if you aren't sure who Abraham's father and mother were?

Updates have been added. 45 names on the list thus far. Still focusing on Pennsylvania arrivals as my research on my ancestry looks as if they came into PA, then migrated to VA, then to KY, and then MO.
I've added information from the 'A genealogy and history of the Kauffman-Coffman families of North America, 1584 to 1937'. The URL is:

I found the following information:
Shelton Family Cemetery
Elizabeth Ann (Patsy) Coffman Atcher born 1819 and died 1856. She was the
daughter of Abrham and Margaret Tripplet Coffman. She was married to James
Atcher Senior on August 14, 1842.
