Dear Cynthia, Thank you so much!!
Oh But dear Cynthia, This is my line, every word of it except, one
generation left out. What you send is pure Charles Kauffman research. He was
a wonderful man, and work very hard all over the world to get info to write
his book. He even interview my Grandfather and a great Cousin in Arkansas.
But so sadly he did get some things wrong, or was told wrong things. You see
The error is after Andreas Kauffman b. 1668 and his wife born in 1670. This
would make Andreas 72 and wife 70 when their last child was born in 1740. I
respectfully suggest that Andreas,b.1668 was married in Germany. And had
children there of which Andreas II was born in 1690 was his son who came to
America, and that Isaac was another. I have found this record at LDS records
about two years ago, and Cynthia, This info may of not been around for
charles Kauffman to see in 1838. So I don't think completely disappointed
with him except he should of saw the age they would be at time in Lancaster
having children. It's certainly not the first time that Father and Sons info
got messed up! Regards and Much thanks, Carl Coffman in Wichita
P.S. There's no record any where to prove Andreas b.1668 ever left Germany
and came to the US. Only his son b. 1690.
I'm only a Kauffman by marriage, but my former mother-in-law and one of her
sons have been tracing their Kauffman lines back from my father-in-law.
They have Andrew Kauffman born November 13, 1668 in Friesenheim, Oberamt of
Neustadt in Switzerland; he died in 1743 in Manor Township, Lancaster
County, Pennsylvania. In 1717 he married Elizabeth Kneissle of Schiltach,
Offenberg, Baden, Germany and they had 12 children:
Christian Kauffman (b. 1723)
Andrew Kauffman, Jr. (unknown)
Elizabeth Kauffman (b. January 10, 1719/20)
Michael Kauffman (unknown)
Jacob Kauffman (unknown)
Anna Kauffman (unknown)
Barbara Kauffman (unknown)
John Andreas Kauffman (b. 1718)
Veronica Kauffman (unknown)
Mary Kauffman (unknown)
Magdalena Kauffman (unknown)
Isaac Kauffman (b. February 7, 1740/41)
These can't be your Coffmans as their parents married in Lancaster County,
Pennsylvania, but the names might indicate a relationship. Coffman was a
common variant in some siblings; one of Christian's sons went by Coffman.
Andrew (Andreas) came from Friesenheim, in Oberamt of Neustadt, Palatinate,
where he is recorded as a Mennonite in 1716. Presumably he is Andreas
Kauffman, the "hosenstiker", or trouser-knitter, mentioned at Steffisburg,
Switzerland. To Friesenheim, or Frieze cloth town, no doubt he went to ply
his trade. He left Rotterdam, Holland, in early part of June 1717, and
arrived in Philadelphia in September and located on 200 acres of land
adjoining Isaac Kauffman on the west. Although he initialed his will A KM,
a clerk wrote his name as Andrew Coffman. So it's pretty variable but
clearly the same lines.
C. Kauffman
Happy New Year, and Happy Researching! : )

Subject: GERMANY CONTACT
Holliday Greeting and HAPPY NEW YEAR
Now For Genealogy: I'm sorry I can't write nor read German but have
plans
to learn in the next few months. I am a American Cousins to the Kaufmann,
and do so want to write the Kaufmann-Cousins left behind. I have read of the
things our people went through, that were anabaptist, from 1535 to 1800's
there in Deutschland and Europe and General area. I'm an old fellow but it
brought tears to my eyes when I read about it a few years ago. My
Swiss/Dutch ancestors came from places like Canton Bern, and two or there
other places, that I'll look up. The Mennonite Magazine, in Lancaster County
Penn. USA, which is located on land given by the crown of Great Britton to
Lord William Penn, In a rewrite much later, about their arrival to the USA.
It didn't give Wives nor Children info, but said that Three Brother-like
Kaufmann's arrived in 1717 to Lancaster County. Their names were Isaac,
Andreas, and Michael Kaufmann. I think Isaac and Andreas were brothers, and
that Michael might of been a cousin or other related. I descend from Andreas
b.1668 Bern. In time I will supply all info requested of me about their
American Families, and what I have on their families in Swiss/Dutch which
goes back to about 1535 and Jacob Kaufmann is first male show on my chart.
My name was changed to Coffman in abt. 1770, and I'm sorry it was. I like
Kaufmann Better, and is more true to where we were from.
I've just started my Europe Searching today, in hope of getting to meet
some of you which are related. The First thing I did was to go to ""all""
the rootsweb mailing list both in Switzerland and Germany, and run an
archives search for all years that the list has been in operation, on
Kaufmann, Kauffmann, and Kauffman. I copied all of the messages pertaining
to that name and trade on hard drive. I checked all years on this list from
1995 to 2002. I have and am still learning a great deal and suggest it's a
good way to try to learn things without bothering others. You can find
1000's of leads to do a follow up contact later to. And Please don't be
surprised to get an e-mail from me if it looks like you could be in my
family line.
Now for the Big Question: By chance do the Kaufmann's, and Cousins there
have Family Reunions. I respectfully request that Your Europe Kaufmann line
please consider inviting some of your American Cousins to attend. If you do
decide to, I will do all the work, and get other K/Coffman to help, in
America to make it work. And to let you know that, I will be first in line
to get there and will try to learn to talk enough Dutch to be understood and
be on time.
This is my first attempt to perfect this, and I am sure there are other
places/people there to ask this request from, and please do send any links
you have that you might think will help this happen, too:

Dear COFFMAN-L List,
I've been studying all archive messages in all of Europe, that has been
posted to rootsweb mailing list from abt. 1995 on to present, that contain
the three spelling of Kauffman. Anyone of you guys can do it too. It easy:
Just put up the main page of rootsweb and pick from their 28,000 + mailing
list. Click on that list, and when your selected list page comes up, go to
the bottom of page and select Archives. Then type in the subject you want to
search, for the different years the list has been in use. Good luck, and
have fun.
In the last 3 days I've ran search on Kauffman in Switzerland, Germany,
Holland, Finland, Norway and have started on England. As I pull up a posted
message from someone, I don't have time to read much, so I put the message
on a floppy for later. I have about 700 of these message to read. I have a
long way to go to understand, as it will take time and I don't know
Dutch/German. But I wont to tell you some of the info that has caught my
attention thus far. If anyone has access to an International Dictionary and
you check, I'm fairly sure you would find that Kaufmann is in the book and
the meaning is Merchant. Europe is big on names for there trades and it
become part of their titled name. You might fine a name example like: John
SMITH, Plumber. or Plumber John SMITH. Sometimes the Trade name is a Capital
and then lower case, and Sometimes not. So far it would appear that a
Surname is all caps. The point I'm trying to make is, tracing a trade name
that's used for a surname, and if everyone don't use the same typing rules
makes things very hard. I also found out that this same John Smith may have
his name in their bible and when he learned his trade, that he will come
back and add plumber to his name. And like what has happened to our Merchant
name, Kaufmann/Coffman, that his children may find the name of trade in
their titled name also. It's very weird and strange to me to see this in
Europe's messages but interesting. Now if our lunk headed ancestors hadn't
used the same given name over and over, Like Andrew, Jacob and etc. coupled
to the above, our Genealogy would be so much easier. The only factor is the
year and day they were born that we can depend on, then maybe not. I've
found two Andrews born within the same day and same year In Lancaster,
County, Pa. but in different places, of which most think it's in error of
where born. So when all is said and done, Their parents are all you can
depend on to i.d. them---maybe.
After I started this looking project, about 6 or so of you sent some of
your search area data to me and other nice words like Joann below. It has
occurred to me, that we need to find a central place, of make one, To send
all of your "I Have info Data" and "I Want info Data" to to act as a
clearing house. Mailing list are good but really this one isn't working. And
I thank you for writing to me here. We have some great brains here on this
list. I know there are some teachers. So scratch your heads and send your
ideas to the list for ones to view, and to act upon. A list mommy is a good
idea, they make the world go around, and bless their hearts. I remain,
Truly yours,
Carl Coffman.
Thank you for your wonderful letter. I have always known, without any
proof, my Coffman name used to be spelled Kaufman/n.
Keep up the good work.
