Grace,
There were two Martin Coffmans that moved from Rockingham Co, VA to
Fairfield Co, OH. One Martin was connected with the Baptist church. My
Martin was with the Church of the United Brethern in Christ and was married
to Sarah Whitehouse. According to another Coffman researcher:
"Martin might have been the son of Jacob Coffman who d. 1796 in Linville,
Rockingham Co. who married Elizabeth Holdiman, daughter of Christian
Holdiman of Lancaster Co., PA. Jacob & Elizabeth also had sons Christian,
Jacob & John. Many of Martin's children evidently settled in Marion Co.,
OH."
.I am trying to determine the parents of my Martin, so any clue you might
have would be greatly appreciated.

I've been running into a lot JosepH Coffman who was married to Abraham
Lincoln's niece, Abigail Lincoln. Now, Ive followed his line as far back as
Germany and found it didnt converge (as far as I knew) with my line that
starts with Melchoi Kauffman, then to Johann Andreas Kauffman, then
Augustine Kauffman who was the firts to America, died in Shendandoah County.
He had three children : John George, Andrew and Jacob Sr.
Anyone have information about these two distinct lines and can tell me if
they are in fact two seperate lines who happen to land in the same
county/surrounding counties in Virginia?
-Grace
My father was Joseph Lewis Coffman, born Feb 11, 1923. I am sure this is a long stretch to work back to your Joseph Coffman. I can find nothing on that side of my family. I found my father Social Security death information but no one else in his family. My Grand Father was Clay Coffman who died around 1952. I know the family lived in Lincoln, Nebraska (where my father was born) before moving to Idaho. Anything sound familiar?

Would anyone care to put together a database of all Civil War Coffmans (and
their lineages, or at least parents or wives - something ot identify them
with our existing lines) from Virginia?
I'm very much interested in finding the ones from my line:
Melchoir Kauffman
Johann Andreas Kauffman
Augustine Kauffman (October 01, 1717)
John George Coffman
John J. Coffman (November 25, 1787)
Joseph M. Coffman (January 06, 1828)
Benjamin F. Coffman (1864)
but I dont know too many relatives that jut off of that main line.
Any takers or has this been done already?

I'm trying to figure out who *really* was the mother of Benjamin F. Coffman,
born 1864. I have found several resources online which say different things:
Ive several references of Joseph Coffman, each with different wives.
Firstly, an obit I found online for Benjamin Coffman (Son of Joseph):
BENJAMIN COFFMAN DIES OF PARALYSIS
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----
Prominent County Line Farmer Was 63 Years Old -- Funeral Services Thursday,
11:30 A. M.
(Special to Daily News-Record)
Broadway, April 19 (1927). -- Benjamin Coffman, a well-known farmer of the
County Line community, died at his home here this morning at four o'clock.
Death followed a stroke of paralysis suffered last Wednesday.
Mr. Coffman was a son of the late Joseph and Helen Coffman. He was 63 years
old and spent his entire life in the County Line section where he was a
prosperous farmer. He was a member of the Reformed Church and was being held
in high esteem by a wide circle of friends.
His wife, who was Miss Rebecca Weatherholtz, survives as do eight
children -- Charles, Hazel, Ralph, and Dolly, at home; Miss Alve, of
Chicago; Mrs. Amanda Arehart, of Pennsylvania; Mrs. S. N. Rhodes of New
Market and Mrs. Paul Estep of Mt. Clinton; three sisters -- Mrs. Joseph P.
Will, of Timberville; Mrs. Isaac Lokey, of Pennsylvania; Mrs. J. Link of
Mount Jackson; and five brothers -- George A. of Pennsylvania; T.D., Ed. L.
and Charles of Cleveland, Ohio, and John J. of New Market.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 o'clock Thursday morning from
Solomon's Church, friends meeting at the Coffman home at 10:30. Rev. J. S.
Garrison, of Harrisonburg, assisted by the Rev. D. W. Zipperer, will
officiate.
Now.. I know this is my Ben because of his wife, Rebecca - I confirmed their
son, Charles Elias is my husband's lineage, from Census I found. Now... I
have heard also, from online sources:
"Benjamin Coffman m Rebecca E Weatherholtz 10-15-1891 m Shen Co. g 27 s
farmer b and residind Rockingham Co., son of Joseph and Nellie (Eleanora)
Coffman."
And, from Solomon Cemetery in Forestville:
Coffman, Bengeman F. Born: 1864 Died: 19 Apr 1927 Son of Joseph & Helen
Coffman
Coffman, Eleanora Born: 2 May 1837 Died: 1 Jun 1901 Wife of Joseph; age
64.0.29
(No mention of a Helen buried here)
So I have a few sources stating Benjamin was the son of Joseph and Nellie or
Joseph and Helen... can *anyone* solve this mystery?? I need help!! Were
Nellie/Eleanora/Helen the same lady? I also read that Joseph had a second
wife named Mary Miller?!?!

Dear Nicki:
I read your e-mail regarding your ancestral home in Hamblen County. The
construction progress on Highway 11-E is many years down the road. I will
try to work with the Department of Transportation to protect the David
Coffman Home. Thank you for your concerns.
Representative Stancil Ford
