Dear Melba,
As you know pg 708 is an Appendix. I went to it and
read about Nicholas and then went back and read the
stuff on Martin. I couldn't see a relationship in what
I read quickly but I hope that someone else can help
you.

Gary - If you go to
http://midatlantic.rootsweb.com/database/d0041/g0000034.htm#I148353
you will find your John Coffman and can trace his
ancestry back to Jacob Kauffman b. abt 1500 of canton
Bern, Switzerland. If you can't get to that url, try
http://midatlantic.rootsweb.com/familyhart/
and select the Jacob Kauffman from Bern.
This site which has much information on the
Kauffman/Coffmans and I recommend it.
The information Tricia Teiber gave from the C. F.
Kauffman book is good. I have a copy of the book and
regard it as sort of a Bible on Kauffmans. Your John
Coffman is not a son of Martin Coffman and Barbara
Stauffer, however. He is the son of Martin Kauffman,
Jr. and Mary Taylor. [Sometimes it gets confusing with
so many different Martins and Michaels]. Your John
Kauffman is the grandson of Martin Coffman and Barbara
Stauffer.
I am a descendant of Martin Kauffman and Barbara
Stauffer as well through my great-grandmother Ellen
Virginia (Kauffman) Rickard. Her ancestry is as
follows:
Ellen Virginia Kauffman b. 20 Nov 1842 Page County,
Virginia - d. 28 Aug 1905 Bern, Nemeha County, Kansas
Parents: Barney Kauffman (1815-1855) Page Co. VA
Rebecca Mauck (1819 - 1891) Page Co. VA
Grandparents: Daniel Kauffman (1781 - 1844) Page Co.
VA
Mary Burner (1786- 1864) Page Co. VA
GGpar's: David Kauffman (1748 - 1805)Shenandoah Co. VA
Torothe Strickler (1756 Shen. Co, Va - 1833

Dear Gary,
Well look out, here your information comes. I found
it in THE book that I referred to so you might want to
print this out and read at your leasure. I am posting
this on the Coffman List site and maybe you can find
more relatives. I am also sending this to Bob Coffman
who supplied me with the book (both to tell him how
much I am enjoying it and incase you are interested in
getting a copy of it) I love architecture so there was
a section for me.
Tricia
The story starts on pg 514 of THE book and continues
from there. This is in the section called Rev. Martin
Kaufman.
Martin Kaufman (?-1749) md Barbara (?) Stauffer. he
appears in Lancaster Co., pa., before October 1733,
since his name appears on the Penn. Archives and Land
Records in Harrisburg, Pa., as having 230 acres of
land surveyed. this tract is located near Landisville,
Pa and was taken over by John Kauffman in 1744. See PA
Patent Bk 12A, pg 516, Feb 23, 1736. Ludowick Stone of
Gerundo, Orange Co., Va to Martin Coffman of the
Province of Pennsylvania for 200 pounds and 5
shillings of current Virginia money, three parcels of
land situate and lying on Gerundo (Shenandoah) River
in Orange co., Va (the book goes on to describe the
tracts of land). he sold land to his brother Michael
Kauffman.
His will was in German. his wife is named a to be
administrator. His brother to be bondsman and hold
estate until oldest son reaches age. The witnesses
were David Kaufman, Michael Kaufman and John Root. The
appraisers of his estate were to be Mennonites. No
names of children were mentioned. See Will Bk 1,
Augusta Co., Va pg 125. His will was probated May 17,
1749 in Augusta Co., Va by Michael Kaufman and John
Root. The same date his wife Barbara bosted a bond to
administer. His inventory was made by Daniel Stover,
Jacob Burner and John Holdman on Jun 16, 1749 and
totaled 236 pounds, 7 shillings and 9 pence. (can be
gathered that he was a man of considerable means who
knew the blacksmithing trade and who was well educated
for his time. He also followed the religious teaching
of the Mennonites, serving as a minister.
The names of his children come from deeds at
Lancaster, Pa October 20, 1760 as follows: Martin
Kauffman, eldest son, David Kaufman, Anna Kaufman,
Magdalena Kaufman and Barbara Kaufman.
D1- Martin Kaufman (?-1805) md Mary Lienberger (?-?)
dau of John Lienberger. Md 2 to Mary Taylor
(d-4-27-1820) dau of John Tayler alias Snyder. Known
as Whitehouse Martin Kaufman to distinguish him from
Hawkbill Martin Kaufman. He was a preacher associated
with Rev John Kountz. When the Primitive Baptist
Church was organised at "Whitehouse" in 1770, Martin
Kaufman and many who were of Mennonite ancestery and
still maintained it was wrong to take up arms joined
religious forces. (at the time of the Revolution the
church split into two factions- the book goes in to
more depth on the split of the church and it appears
that your families side ultimately moved almost lock
stock and barrel to Ohio - it also goes into great
detail on the Whitehouse building)
Martin Kaufman's will was witnessed by Abraham
Strickler and David Beaver. His executor was John
Roads. The will says that sons Martin and Peter had
already gotten their legacies. That son John was to
hold the home place until Joseph, Benjamin and Isaac
were 21. Don David was to get the Hawkbill tract.
Joseph was to get horse place to pay his sisters
Maria, Magdalena, Anna and Christina.
This Whitehouse place is in what is now Page co Va.
Formerly this section of Page Co was part of
Shenendoah Co.
Children of Martin Coffman and Barbara Stauffer:
D11- John Coffman (1765-?) md Feb 17, 1789 to Anna
Brubaker (Feb 7, 1773-?) dau of Abraham and Barbara
Long Brubaker; g dau of John and Anna Brubaker. he
lived at Whitehouse until about 1812 when he moved to
Mason Co., now West Virginia. Abraham Brubaker had
1320 acres of land lying on the Ohio River and willed
that this tract be divided into five tracts or
plantations by three disinterested persons. his five
daughters were to draw lots for their choice. This
will was dated 1804 and no doubt his daughter Anna was
one who got a plantation in Mason Co., In 1796 John
Coffman was authorized to have a ferry across the
south fork of the Shenandoah River to the land of
Abraham Strickler. The price of a man or horse was
the same 6 cents. In 1817 he is recorded as buying of
Bushrod Washington of Mount Vernon,Va 100 acres on the
Great Kanawha River; it being a parcel or division of
lands of Gen George Washington alloted to the children
of James Washington.
The census of 1850 shows him living with his widowed
daughter and her children the Reynolds.
Children of John Coffman and Anna Brubaker
D111-Mary Caufman (1790-?) md Sep 5, 1809 to Nathan
Long (1784-?) Southside, Mason Co., WVA
D112-John Cauffman (1799-?) md Mar 23, 1824 to Martha
Hughes (1804-?). he got land from his father in 1826.
Later moved to Gallipolis, Ohio.
D113-Reuben Coffman (1800-?) md Jan 1 1824 to Julia D
Reynolds (1804-?)
D114-Jonas Caufman (Feb 25, 1803-Apr 8, 1876) md Nov
1, 1826 to Mary Dohbyns (?-?); md2 1836 to Synthia
Adaline McDermitt (1806-?) got land from his father
May 19, 1826, Southside, Mason Co., WVA
D115-Zachariah Coffman (?-?) md Jan 17, 1828 to Sally
Hill(?-?); md2 Oct 26, 1839 to Susan Coach. After
second marriage moved to Kentucky and later Louisa
Co., Iowa.
D116-Rebecca Coffman (1814-?) md 1832 to Randolph
Reynolds, Mason Co., WVA.
D117- Martin Coffman (no dates or other information
listed)
This is a very short hand edition of your family. I
hope that you find it interesting and please forgive
my typing. Children of John and Anna and their
families are listed too. If you give me your
Grandfather or what ever, I will try to type up that
listing for you (since I located your family in the
book). If you are interested in a photocopy of "A
Genealogy and History of the Kauffman-Coffman Families
of North America 1584-1937" by Charles Fahs Kauffman,
Bob Coffman <roph13(a)aol.com> furnished me with one
for a very reasonable fee considering copying, postage
and handling
I appologize for my typing .. my shift finger seems to
be out of whack tonight.
