Hi. List,
Is anyone of you in contact with the ALASKA Coffman's, and/or on this
list? Three days ago,I ran into the Coffman surname listed in Grainger Co.
Tn. with a ALASKA e-mail address. Very anxious to contact because this
connection can explain how the Coffman's left Tn. and went to Calif.-on to
Oregon--To State of Washington-- and then to Alaska. I've always wondered
how they (the Coffman's) were related to the rest of the Coffman Body.
Thanks list, hope to hear back from you. Zella Coffman

Hi everyone,
I'm searching for information on Jacob Koffman/Coffman,
b. 1790 in Pennsylvania, who married Betsey Hobarger(?)
on 5 Dec 1813 in Meadville, Crawford Co., PA (located in
NW Pennsylvania).
Jacob served a short time in the War of 1812 (3 Jan. to
6 Feb. 1814), but did not qualify for a pension. I have
a copy of his pension files from the Nat'l Archives. His
name is listed in the "War of 1812 Pensioners" from
Fayette Co., PA (located in SW PA on the W.VA. border),
although his files read that his pension application
was "rejected" because he served less than 60 days.
He moved from Pennsylvania to Winnebago Co., Wisconsin
before 28 Apr 1871, the date he applied for a pension.
According to his pension file he lived at the town of
Wepreskin(?), but I couldn't locate the town on a map.
However, his post office was Waukau, Wis. (located
several miles west of Oshhosh) and both towns are
located in Winnebago County.
Any information on Jacob Koffman/Coffman, his family,
and his parents and siblings would be very much
appreciated.

Diane, Hello Cousin,
You need to save this below family tree chart on comp. somewhere, and
print a copy to refer to as you go looking for old dead people.<g>. If you
could pin it up, really helps, as I have. You asked about David K/Coffman
and Lowell marriage. That's the Brother to our line with Andrew, showed in
Generation # 8. Although I'm not Convinced these two K/Coffman's were in the
American Rev. others say they were and were and from Virginia, or live in
Va. at one time. I will set out to prove it one way or another, sometime.
However there is another Kauffman (in our line) that "was" in the American
Rev. To Wit: Andrew Kauffman b.1750 Pa. d.1836 m. Mary Herr Pvt Pa. If you
want to join The DAR or etc., you need to send $5 to Registrar
General,NSDAR, 1776 D. Street NW, Washington,D.C.20006. I'de be happy to pay
1/2 for a copy for Daug. Zella to use and Keep. Regards Cousin Carl
I draw your atten. to Gen.8 where you see David Harmon Coffman,b.1750
and brother Andrew Coffman,b. 1760. There were 12 of these children in this
family, OUR tree follows Andrew, These two brothers left Lancaster Co.
Penn. in about 1780-83 for N.C. Terr., later to become Tenn. I guess the
other 10 stayed in Penn. Haven't tried to trace them but do have their names
somewhere. They both are thought to of fought in the American Rev. which got
them in Dutch with their Mennonites Families from Switzerland, who did not
believe in war.
I Can't complete believe this as when they filed for land in North
Carolina Terr. in 1871, if they were vets, land would of been free, but
deeds show the brothers payed 200 lbs. Sterling each for their 200+, (when
land was layed out by them, they had their fingers on the scale's
<G>),acers. And knowing these Dutch Kauffman, If it was free land, they
would of never paid.(big smile) Respectfully submitted, Carl Coffman,

I am still looking for the family of Lorenzo Dow Coffman, born 1818,
Giles Co., Tenn. In 1841 he married Sarah Waldrip in Old Tishimingo Co.,
Miss. They moved to Texas around 1846, and later moved to Frio County,
Texas.
While he was in Miss. he appears to have been living with Robert
Coffman and his wife Elizabeth. This Robert later moved to Ark. Robert
was never in Giles Co., Tenn. according to a descendent. Was Dow a
brother, nephew, etc? When Dow Coffman, he went by the name Kaufman
after he came to Texas, moved to Frio Co., Texas in the 1860s he bought
some land that had been bought or was a land grant for George Washington
Coffman. Does anyone know who he might be? Would sure like some info on
them as I have looked for years. His mother was supposed to have been a
Young or a Youngblood, but I can't find a Coffman that married to one.
Sarah's family were all "HardShell Baptist", some of them being
ministers. I would guess that Dow had a similar religious belief.

Well it looks like Zella can become a member of the DAR, because I found
your David during our search of the DAR Patriot Index. The following
information was listed in the index.
David:
born circa 1751
died about 3/31/1835 AL
married Mary Ann Lovel
Soldier, Patriotic Service, VA and NC
Since someone has established membership in the NSDAR through him, you may
obtain a copy of the DAR application with the patriots information by
sending a check for $5.00 payable to Treasurer General NSDAR. Mail the check
along with the information on the Patriot to: Record Copy Department;
Registrar General NSDAR; Administration Building; 1776 D Street NW;
Washington, DC 20006-5303. Please send only one check and request per
envelope. Requests for record copies may take four to six weeks as they are
very busy.
There are two Andrews listed, but they were both born and died in PA.
Best of luck in your research.
Hope this helps and if we can help you again, please feel free to contact

Hi, Carl:
I got to Phila, PA today. Visited the PA Historical Society and the PA
Genealogical Society. Neither one showed me too much either. Our MD
Historical Society is the best.
My son got wound up on the Kauffman/Coffman name and did a spin off on it.
I
kept telling him that's how things worked 200 years ago but will he listen,
NOOOOOO.
There was one cardex file in the PA Historical Society that had the
following:
COFFMAN - Bible Records, see Sophie Selden Rodgers, A-K, p144-145, file code
Gen Ro6
KAUFMAN, Jay Warren. Bicentenial addresses delivered at the 200th
Anniversary of Leacock Presbyterian Church, Paradise, PA. Edited by Jay
Warren Kaufman,
Lancaster, PA, vii, 70p, illus. 19cm, Call La2P
KAUFMAN BIBLE RECORDS 1737-1826, bible records, in German, of the Kaufman
(Cauffman) family, call BR/Ka
PATTERSON BIBLE RECORDS. Records (1777-1870) from the Bible of John
Patterson and Rachel Cauffman (BR/Pa)
UHLER BIBLE RECORDS 1815-1881. Bible records of Jonathan Knight Uhler and
Emily Hudson Cauffman. Call BR/Uh
There were no books on the Kauffman/Coffman/Cauffman family in the library.
Also, you had to fill out a form and submit it and the people at the society
pulled the documents. Copies were 50 cents each which is a lot of money IF
you get a lot of copies.

I am looking for anyone having information on Jennings Coffman and links
back from him to the Pennsylvania Dutch Coffmans.
My great-grandfather was Jennings A. Coffman who had grown up in
Antelope County Nebraska. I don't know anything about his parents, but I
would assume that they had not been born in Nebraska. He trained as a
physician in Lincoln, NE in the 1870's, and afterward practiced briefly
in Hall County, NE. His practice failing due to a "panic" in the 1870's
or 1880's, his marriage ended in divorce. He moved to Ozark, Missouri or
environs and married
Clara, not necessarily in that order. I'm uncertain of his dates of
birth and death, but I have found a final divorce decree from Clara in
Greene County, Missouri, in February, 1905. He had a son, Jennings B.
Coffman, born August 2, 1897. Jennings B. graduated from High School in
Ozark. He moved to Lamoni, Iowa to live with a paternal aunt, Melissa
Lovell, after Jennings A. died, around 1915. Jennings B. died in 1978 in
Orlando, FL.
According to my father's recollection, there were paternal cousins that
Jennings B. visited in Michigan, a half brother from the Nebraska family
who lived in Missouri, and a paternal cousin, Mary Hughes, from
California. Family tradition had it that the Coffmans had been of
Pennsylvania Dutch ancestry, but that's all I've got going anywhere
beyond the specifics above.
Any help would be appreciated, as I have reached a bit of a dead end.
Thanks.
Hi Carl,
Appreciate your response to my e-mail and the invitation
to your Coffman reunion in Knoxville, TN in July. That
probably will fit into my summer schedule so I'll await
additional information from you about the specific
location of the reunion, etc. I've been trying to pin
down my Jacob Coffman (b. ca 1749 in Smithfield, PA area
region not far from Lancaster) for about 15 years so,
with your help, maybe I'll finally track him down this
summer.

I would also be interested in your cousin Boyd's list of the 10 siblings
to David and Andrew that stayed behind in PA. I've been *trying* to
research (one of the many) John COFFMANs and so far, been unable to
place him. Censuses agree that he was born in PA abt 1797 (rumor has
it, somewhere near Lancaster).
Thanks for your help!

Hi Carl,
Did your David and Andrew Coffman relatives have a
brother named Jacob Coffman (b. ca 1749) who remained in
Smithfield, PA and and raised his family of 4 boys and 4
girls in that area?
I have information only on one of Jacob's children: my
3rd great grandfather Henry Coffman, b. ca 1783 in the
Smithfield, PA area. I've never been able to track down
the names of Jacob's wife nor their children. My Henry
Coffman moved to Harrison Co., (W)VA around 1800, where
he married and raised a large family that has been
easily traceable in West Virginia.
Any thoughts on who my ancestor Jacob Coffman, wife, and
other 7 children might have been? Some of Jacob's
grandchildren are named: Felix, Augustus Wamsley,
Elizabeth, Jesse, Margaret, Henry D., John G., Benjamin,
William H., David W., and George W. Coffman.
Appreciate your comments.
Jerry Coffman

In the Mercer Co.KY minute books for 23rd Aug 1795 is the following: "Administration on the estate of Christian Coffman, dec'd granted to Martha Viatch, William Viatch, Isaac Coffman they giving bond with Ab'm Banta (________?______poor quality film) Whereupon they took the oath."
Does anyone have a copy of this estate settlement they are willing to share?
Is there anyone with knowledge about this Christian Coffman, his wife and children? Wilda
