Has anyone done any research on the Coffman family from New York ? I am
looking for Eliza Coffman , all I know is she was born in New York, about
1840. She married John W. Brown and moved to Cedar Creek , Virginia, had
eight sons, left him and married Jake Hebb. She moved to the Pittsburgh area
and lived there until she died. She is my husband's great Grandmother and we
know very little about her. Has anyone came across her and her family ????
Pauline Brown
Hello,
I am new to the list. I am looking for info on Ann Mary Coffman/
Kauffmann that was born abt 1770 in Pennsylvania. Her parents were
George Coffman and Magdelina Hochwaerter.
Both of these families ended up in Cove District of Barbour Co.Va., WV
Ann Mary Coffman married Jacob Lesher in Dec.14,1791 in Maryland
Hope to find a connection here.
Joan
I just want to remind everyone and introduce the newer members of our
list to a web site that was designed to try to identify as many COFFMAN
families who immigrated to and/or from Pennsylvania as we can find. We
have a few COFFMAN families represented so far but there are many, many
more that are not represented yet. You can check out what we have
collected so far at:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~pacoffman/
I hope you'll let me know if you had COFFMAN ancestors in PA that need
to be added!
This is what I presently have for my Coffman connection. I descend from Eliza Ann Coffman Loman.
I would appreciate help in fleshing out the bones, as well as learning more of Adam and Jacob.

Dear Friends,
I just received this URL and went out and checked it out. Sure enough, there were the names and birth dates of all of my immediate family, along with their addresses and Zip codes! This is not good! There should be something one could do about the privacy issue. I personally do not want this kind of information out on the web.
I followed the instructions printed below in this letter, and removed our names and information. It takes time to do this. I just thought all of you would want to know about this web page. Our personal information should not be out there on the web!

Hi everyone,
I just received this from another list member. Since I found myself
listed and have deleted me and family members, I thought I'd better pass it along so you could do same if you wanted, I personally do not like
the idea of my personal vital data on the Internet.
Bobbie [Speir] Jarvinen.

I have been made aware of a website that lists everyone and their
birthdays.
It is www.anybirthday.com
I have already deleted many of my family members. If you do not want
your family members listed here are the steps to delete them.
At the main page go to the bottom of the page, click on FAQ.
On the next page go to How Can I remove and click privacy statement.
On the next page scroll down to "Opt Out Option."
Click on it.
It will take you to the page to delete yourself and family members.
You will need the persons first & last name, birth date and zip code to
delete.
To remove more family, repeat the steps.
Sorry-made an error--Hans was married in 1674.

Subject: Old Harnsberger Letter Transcribed from the Harnsberger News
I thought the list might enjoy this letter.
Transcribed from the Harnsberger News March 1963
July 29, 1845
Port Republic, Virginia
>From Stephen Harnsberger to his 15 year old daughter Christina Araminta
Virginia Harnsberger.
My dear Christina,
I desire to correspond with you pretty regularly because it will give
you
satisfaction to hear from home often, and it will be of use to your
improvement in composition, and I am persuaded you are not insensible of
our
best wishes for your instruction - perhaps it would be proper to say
mental
improvement. We are pleased to learn that you are pleased with the
school,
and have so good an opportunity of receiving instruction in the
principles
of an English education and hope you will not be at a lofs to appreciate
your privileges - and will labour to be succefsful in accomplishing all
that
it may be reasonable to expect in the time.
I wish to imprefs it on your mind that if you be advantageously employ
do
not undertake more studies that you can complete understandingly during
Mifs
Brann's term. Give much attention to spelling and reading. Try to
master
Geography and English grammar and pay especial attention to Arithmetic.
And
next in importance for you is History. Now I am of the opinion that
these
first branches of learning are so efsential, that to neglect either of
them
would be at once a great barrier in your way in all your after studies
which
afterwards might never be overcome. The studies of Philosophy and
Kemistry
are proper and perhaps more pleasant but lefs useful than the former,
and so
I would say of Astronomy and Logis or any other. I make these
suggestions
because my experience and observation both fully satisfy my mind of the
facts and you are too young to experience to know them for yourself. If
you
contemplated to study other brances than the first above named better
stop
at once and try yourself whether you are prepared to quit the former to
enter upon the new one, nor hope to accomplish too many at the same
time.
Too many cooks spoil the broth, you know. When you understand Grammar &
Arithmetic & History well then engage in some other studies. It is well
never to have too many irons in the fire. It is a recreation to have
more
than one study, but a vexation to have too many. Let you mind be
taken up
with the study in a a few branches at a time. When you have acquired a
good
knowledge of them, then commence another. By perserverence and
application
you will be able to accomplish the whole, but if you take too much at
once
you may expect to be a smatterer always. I hope I have made myself
understood, and that you will see propriety in my feeble advice, and
when
you write tell me of your progrefs and what you are studying, and so far
as
I can I will give my views, hoping you will do honour to yourself and
your
preceptrefs. " I send you Smith's Grammar and will by the first chance
send
you Smith's Arithmetic or any other book that you may need if I know it"
"Our love & make our respects to Mifs Brann."
"Your affectionate, S. Harnsberger"
Stephen's letter used the old style for writing double "s"., which have
been
indicated by an 'f" preced the second ''s" in each instance.
Stephen Harnsberger was 58 when he wrote this letter, he was born
January
03, 1787. He married Elizabeth Baker in 1812 and together they had 10
children. Christina being the youngest.
Christina Araminta Virginia Harnsberger was born May 15, 1830 and
married
DeWitt COFFMAN December 12, 1855, in Cherry Grove, Rockingham Co, VA.
She
died in July 18, 1866. A short life to be sure.
