Dear Coffman List, I found the e-mail while trolling the rootsweb archives
in Texas, and I'm sending to list, because of the unusual history on
coffmans about 1/2 way down on e-mail. I have never seen this info anywhere
before, and do not know if it's true or no. Zella

I am looking for information on a William Watson, the son of James
Watson of Nelson County, kentucky who was in Panola County on the 24th day
of September, 1859, as per copy of Deed recorded in Nelson County,
Kentucky.
I found a mention of a William Watson in a Certificate of Character
dated in November 1832..
I find a William Watson, as a single man, in the 1840 U. S. Census
of Shelby County, Texas. Since a part of Panola County came out of the
northern part Shelby County, I am assuming this could be my William.
Next I find a William Watson, as a married man, in the 1850 U. S.
Census of Panola County, Texas, as follows:
1850 U. S. Census, taken 20 Sep 1850
Page No: 147
Dwelling No: 42
Family No: 42
Value of Real Estate: $500.00

William Watson 42 M KY
Nancy B. 35 F Tenn
Henry 9 M Tex
Catharine 7 M Tex
John L. 5 M Tex
William W. 4 M Tex
James 2 M Tex
No Name 1 M Tex
To date, I have not located the marriage record of William and
Nancy B., but I am assuming they were married sometime around 1840, due to
the age of the first born. I am assuming the Marriage Record will be found
in Shelby County, Texas.
Next I find a William Watson, as a married man, in the 1860 U. S.
Census of Panola County, Texas, as follows:
1860 U. S. Census, taken 20 Aug 1860
Carthage P. O.
Page 382
Dwelling No: 730
Family No: 730
Value of Real Estate: $12,000.00

My copy of the Microfilm was of poor quality and I could not make
out the name where the question marks are, but due to the age, I would
assume that it is John L. and that William W. was either missed or has
died.
At the present time, I do not have access to other U. S. Census
records, so am unable to follow the family through this means.
Henry and Sarah Watson, his grandparents, came to what is now
Nelson county, Kentucky in the late 1770's, as near as I can determine.
Supposedly Henry was born in 1735 in Frederick County, Maryland, but I have
been unable to substantiate this birth. First information I find on this
familyt is in Kentucky.
Henry and Sarah had five (5) children:
William, who married Rebecca Goodin (My line)
James, who married Nancy Coffman (William's, in Panola Co., Father)
Rebecca, who married William Cannady
Henry, who married 1st, Nancy Bridgewater, 2nd Mary Ann Rhodes
Abraham, who married Elly Rhodes
James and Nancy Coffman, as near as I can determine had 12 children:
William, who I have traced to Panola County, Texas, through the a
Deed.
Isaac, who married Sarah Jane Wells
Doctor, who is supposedly married to a Sarah Frances
John, who married Mary Ann (Polly) Dickerson
Joseph R., who married Susan M. and/or Sarah P., who is named in
father's will
Henry, who I think died shortly after his father was executed, who
is named in father's will
Sally, who is named in her father's will.
Maria, who married William Dickerson (named in Deed)
Louisa, who married Henry Dugan
Anna, who married Michael Coffman, her cousin, died young
Polly, who married Greenberry Elliott
Catherine, who married Michael Coffman, her sister's husband.
Michael Coffman and another man were murdered by James Watson.
James was supposedly the first person legally hung in Nelson County,
Kentucky.
William, Isaac, Doctor, John and Isaac were indicted for the
murders. William, Doctor and James, their father were tried for the
murders. The only conviction was of the father James. All this occurred
in the late 1820's early 1830's.
When I found the Certificate of Character dated in November 1832,
I felt this could be the William Watson who had left Nelson County,
Kentucky because of the scandal. Pure speculation at this point.
Any information on William Watson will be appreciated.
THANKS IN ADVANCE.

I'm looking for any information on the following family:
1850 Todd County KY census:
John Coffman, 24, KY
Nancy, 25, KY
Thornton, 1, KY
William Crockett, 73, VA
This is all I have. Can anyone identify this family? Thanks.
Donna
Got this from another list.
Hi Folks,
Sierra is offering a free search of their War of 1812
database for a limited time at:
http://www.sierrahome.com/familytree/records/
There is a Joseph Coffman, Rhinehart Coffman, and a Robert Coffman, all
members of Bunch's Regiment (1814), East Tennessee Militia.
Can anyone shed any light on these Coffman's?
More on Bunch's Regiment:
Colonel Samuel Bunch, 2nd Regiment of East Tennessee Militia, Jan - May
1814. Men mostly from Clairborne, Grainger, Washington, Jefferson, Knox,
Blount, Cocke, Greene, Hawkins, Rhea, and Sevier Counties.
Andrew Jackson's official report of the Battle of Horseshoe Bend (Mar 27,
1814) mentions that "a few companies" of Colonel Bunch were part of the
right line of the American forces at this engagement. Men from this
regiment remained at Fort Williams prior to Horseshoe Bend to guard the
post - provision returns indicate that there were 283 men from Bunch's
regiment in the fort at the time of the battle. This regiment was in
General George Doherty's Brigade and many of the men stayed after the
enlistment expiration of May 1814 to guard the posts at Fort Strother and
Fort Williams until June/July 1814. The line of march went through Camp
Ross (near present-day Chattanooga), Fort Armstrong, and Fort Jackson.

I am looking for information on our Coffman and Brown families. My
husband's grandfather was
John William Brown and he married Eliza Coffman . They had eight sons, and
lived in Frederick County , Cedar Creek, Virginia . I believe they were both
born in the early 1800's ,maybe 1830 or 1840 . She later left him and
married Jake Hebb and moved to Pennsylvania . Is anyone researching this
family ?
I would appreciate any---------------information I can get . Thank
you -----Pauline Reckley Brown

Hi list, someone now, or years to come, will be glad to be able to read this
story on the town Coffman, Mo. Really nice people like this lady, make our
search a little more fun with their kindness. Zella Coffman
Hi Zella,
Just remembered that I had wanted to answer your post a few days ago.
We've had such a hectic week here with the ER, and I'm hoping to just
get a little bit caught up here this afternoon.
Since you posted your address, I'll send you a copy of an article written
by Lucille Basler, the town historian for many years. It appeared in
the Herald or Fair Play many years ago, and I saved a copy of it. I've
shared it with others, and I'm sure that there's no problem as long as
she has the credit for having written it.
My family, the Bryans, are from around Coffman, Minnith, and Ste.
Genevieve. My gr.gr.grandparents moved their family to that area from
KY in 1822, and settled around Coffman and Avon, on the Saline Creek.
This is one of my very favorite drives, the frontage road that turns
off 32 beside I55. The hills are beautiful, and will be even more so
this time of year. The roads are blacktop and well kept up. If you are
coming from Ste. Gen, cross over the interstate I55, and take the next
road to your left, the frontage road #B. I would say that River aux Vases
is about 10 - 15 minutes from the interstate, a very small little
village now, also has been called Staabtown, for the people who owned
the general store during the early part of this century. The old store
is torn down now. Right across the road from it was an old tavern, it's
gone now too, but a brick one has been built, don't know if it's open
or not...across from this little junction was the blacksmith shop
where my dad as a boy and his dad used to rest their horses on their
way out to Avon to visit dad's older, married sister. There was a nice
old farmhouse up the road behind the tavern, where two elderly (?)
Operle sisters lived. They sold a noontime dinner to travelers, for I
believe, a quarter or fifty cents.
Going on down # B, you will eventually come to Coffman (bear straight
ahead, don't take the right fork). There's a Catholic Church at the top
of the hill on the left, with a burial ground. As you go down the
slight hill and the road turns to the left, look to your right, and
you just might see the ghost image of the Old Red Brick Home that was
the home to so many families thru the years. It's been torn down now,
and bought by ??????? very sad.
Did you know that it was built by Joseph Coffman for his daughter,
Sarah Jane as a wedding gift, I think about 1826...I'd have to look it
up. She married Bernard Pratte, had three children, Mary, Joseph, and
Beadie (Beattie) before dying at an early age. She was only married
about 7 years. Beadie grew up to marry my great aunt Ann, one of 8
sisters, who lived in a big house on the Saline.
The big families were very prosperous in those times and large landowners.
The road curves again to the right, and you'll soon come to a sign now,
pointing the way to the left down a little lane to the Old Stone Church
Graveyard. it's worth walking thru. Beade and Ann are buried there,
also several babies of Ann's oldest sister, Mary...but so many of the
stones are down. Also my gr gr grandfather, Jesse, in the above the
ground vault, and his wife Louisa, and their bachelor son, Willie, a
lawyer. They are the ones who came from KY. to settle there.
A bit farther on the road you'll come to the Old Log Church, family
stories say that my gr grandfather had a log cabin school built on a
corner of his ground to be used as a school and a church. His own
daughters had tutors and went away to school (!) Whether this is the
same one, or not, I don't know.
We were down last May again, with my dad, who is 94 now, sort of a last
trip home to the old stompin' grounds...there are a lot of lovely Bed
& Breakfasts in Ste. Gen. I don't know if the Rock House is open again
now, that's the Hubardeau Guest House on the corner of 4th and Jefferson,
right in town by the church. We stayed there several years ago, and it
was magic for me because that's where dad spent most of his growing up
years. Back then, the house lot held a big barn, chicken house,
cottage, ice house, and so on.
Long enough, once I start talking about that area, I could go on and on.
I do hope that you get to visit, and Ste. Gen is head over heels above
Farmington...smaller, cozier, more historical...my hometown, sort of.
Enjoy,
Sheila Bryan
One more little ps...if you continue on past the log cabin church, the
road turns right and I believe it turns into a rather less kept up
road, probably gravel, but it does come out eventually to 32, and a
turn to the left goes to Farmington, to the right goes to Ste. Gen.

I have been meaning to put a note on this list .. Ancestry.com has a TX land
grant file, newer, not sure how long it has left FREE.. But there are a lot,
75 Coffman's listed... Several look like my line and think they are others
on list!. Go and Look. more than one is at Red river.
I finally made it to the Lib and was doing work in New Orleaans.. 1880.
Had to run the whole film of the 3rd ward. Copied 2 or 3 Coffman's info.
Spelled with a K.. Think they are all newer arrivals, and I will email
their info in a day or two, just in case any on list are interested. Val

Carl,
Just got a page out of my ggrandmothers bible. It shows John Coffman
"Borned" November 4, 1847, died April 6, 1937. His wife Isabell "Borned"
July 25th, 1850 and died February 28, 1939. Also included was a copy of
John's death certificate which indicates John was died in Piqua, OH. His
father was David Coffman born Unknown city, Pennsylvania and his mother was
"Liza Ann" Jackson born Unknown City, VA. I think "Liza" didn't like the
first name Ann and used Ann as her middle name. She probably prefered the
nickname "Liza" to Elizabeth and it stuck. Guess this puts a little
different light on things. I still don't have any real dates for either
David or "Liza", but I think there was a recent post about a David Coffman
from PA. One possible theory is that David was born in PA, but moved to VA
where he met and married "Liza" then moved to Dayton, OH.
Any takers????
