Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Hi, I am new to sending messages to groups so please bear with me. I have
to break the ice sometime and now as good a time as any. My COFFIN family
is small to date.
Eliza COFFIN married John ADAMS 1849 in Dorset. A daughter Charity Martha
ADAMS was born to them on 13 Nov 1850 at New Buildings, Blandford, Dorset.
I know they also had a son George. I am about to order the marriage
certificate for Eliza and John and hope this will take be back a
generation. Charity married Nehemiah NEW in Blandford, Dorset in 1873 and
their only child Mabel Adams NEW was born in 1874 in Blandford. Charity,
Nehemiah and Mabel came to Australia in 1885. Mabel married Henry DOW in
Australia and then my grandmother was born and so on from there. Is anyone
tracing the same COFFIN family as myself. Thanks for your time.
Happy researching

Hi Group,
Hooray, Rootsweb is up and running again!! (See below)
I found some COFFIN Websites that are interesting. I haven't had
a chance to read much of it, yet. But, I'm wondering what the
group thinks of them. Some of it is lengthy. But, I thought it
might not only give the list some interesting reading, but
something to talk about, not only the accounts, but how much of
the rest of it is sound genealogy, or factual data.
Please don't reply to me, but to the list about them to everyone,
as I don't have the time right now to respond to lots of mail.
The sites and their URL's are:

Good Afternoon to all:
Several years ago when I first started doing genealogy, I made a trip to
Salt Lake City and visited the Mormon Library there. At that time I did not
realize how important the names of books and other material was, also
dates, publisher, etc. I did copy some pages from 2 books and I pass this
bit of info on to you for what it is worth:
The Tristram Coffin Reunion Association was formed in August 1880 and at
the 1881 meeting appointed Zebulon Butler Coffin of Cincinnati and William
E. Coffin of Richmond, Indiana an Executive Sub-committee to produce a
Coffin Genealogy. "THE COFFIN FAMILY"
TRISTRAM COFFYN, (as he always signed his name,) the founder of the family
line in America, and from whom all
persons by the name of COFFIN in this country are descended, was born at
Brixton, a small parish and village, near Plymouth, in the southwesternpart
of Devenshire County, England in the year 1605. He married Dionis Stevens,
daughter of Robert Stevens, esquire, of Brixton, and in 1642 emighrated to
America with his wife 5 small children, his widowed mother, and 2 unmarried
sisters. He lived alternately in Salisbury, Haverhill and Newbury, in the
Colony of Massachusetts, until 1659, when he came to Nantucker, then under
the jurisdiction of New York, and made arrangements for the purchase of the
island by a company which he organized at Salisburyt. He returned to the
island with his family in 1660, where he lived until his death, which
happened on the 2nd day of October, A.D. 1681, at his new residence on the
hill, at Northham, near Capaum Pond, at the age of 76 years.
Coffin is a word of Hebrew origin, signifying a small basket. It has been
claimed by some of the enthusiastic descendants of Tristram that the
Coffins, in the Old World, prevailed before the time of the Pharaohs, and in
the New World, came in with the Mayflower. Yet both of these statements are
unfounded.

I do have more historical info if anyone is interested and also some
Biographical info on Tristram's children.
Sad part is I cannot fit into any of this information my earlies information
of my ancestors is JAMES BURTON COFFIN born Jan 1, 1840 at Pickwick Co.,

Married Magdalena Miller 1/4/1818. They had 19 children, 11 survived. Ira

Horatio Nelson COFFIN preferred Nelson or Nelson H. and is often listed

Hi Bob,
Since yours is the very first Rootsweb message that has come through
all day, I thought I'd respond. I don't know if you will receive it
through the list, but, you can always e-mail me directly.
I haven't heard of an Elizabeth m. to a Thomas THAXTER in the context
of the Tristram COFFIN extended family, but who knows, maybe I'll
learn something.
But, I do have Pope's Pioneer of MA entry for Thomas THAXTER, if you
don't already have it, I can share that with you. It does mention
an Elizabeth as his wife.

Sorry if this is a duplicate. Have not received any responses, so am
resending based on the listowners plea of 9/12.
My great-grandfather was Lemuel COFFIN Tiel (ca1863 - 1905). No one that
I've spoken to in the family knows anything about how he got his middle
name. His parents were Edward TIEL and Catherine DONNELLY. Does anyone
have any hints or suggestions? I thought maybe COFFIN was a grandmothers
maiden name? Thanks!

Ann-- I am reposting something about ancestor Tristam Coffin, Jr. from the
ESSEX-ROOTS list relating to the founding of Haverhill, MA which was posted by

Hi Davis Cousins and any Coffins, too, I thought that I'd share from the
Histories and Geneal. Essex County CD on the "History of Haverhill," pages
9-19. in mostly my own wording.
In 1640 Mr John Ward and some of the men of Newbury requested permission of
the General Court to settle at Pentucket, renamed Haverhill. Of the men that
accompanied Mr. Ward to the wild, untamed, vast and in some places
impenetrable forest wilderness of Pentucket, were the following from Newbury:
William
WHITE; Samuel GILE; James DAVIS; Henry PALMER; John ROBINSON; Christopher
HUSSEY; John WILLIAMS; and Richard LITTLEHALE. Also, among them, were Abraham
TYLER; Daniel LADD; Joseph MERRIE and Job
CLEMENT. This company of men "struck the first blow towards erecting a
settlement in the wild woods of Pentucket." The town was then settled and some
houses were erected.
It wasn't until 1642, however, that negotiations were made with the Indian
Sachems and the deed for the purchase of the land from it's original
proprietors was made.
This interesting Indian deed was dated ye fifteenth day of November Ann Dom
1642. Pentucket was purchased for 3 pounds and 10 shillings. Those signing
the deed were John WARD; Robert CLEMENTS, Tristram COFFYN, Hugh SHERRATT
and William WHITE, as well as the sign of Thomas DAVIS, which I can't
duplicate with the keyboard but looked like ( ) with a horizontal oval apple
with a long vertical somewhat curved stem between the parenthesizes. The
Sachems signed their
marks on the deed:

Wow, Sandi. Either that was a great bargain, or the land was not worth
much or the Indians got ripped off. Ipswich cost John Winthrop, Jr. 20.

Hi Craig and all,
Maybe I should copy this and redo those arrows, now that I know how to unwrap
my lines. Then all you would have to imagine is the curved bows and not have
to imagine unbroken arrows! :)

Subject: **IMPORTANT NOTICE** GenConnect Upgrade
To all GenConnect Board Administrators:
We're preparing for the latest upgrade to the GenConnect System. There's a
few things you need to know about this upgrade .....
The entire GenConnect system will be upgraded starting at midnight on
Saturday September 5, 1998. This will require that we shut the system
down. The reason is twofold ..... it's not just a patch .... it's a
re-write of the program that runs the system. Also, the Global Search
engine has been revamped and mega-enhanced, which will require a total
rebuild. No new postings can be allowed during this rebuilding period.
Downtime is estimated to be 8 hours max (yep .... it's a huge system now!).
Anyone attempting to use the system during this downtime will be given
notice that it's being upgraded .... no-one will be left in the dark.
However, you could help us make this a smoother transition if you would
spread the word on any and all of the major mailing lists that you may be
subbed to (ROOTS-l, xxROOTS-L, your county lists, surname lists, etc.).
Will you help us by doing this?
Below are some of the new features that the latest version (1.10) will
contain. Please feel free to include those items listed as 'Visitor Toys'
in any announcement you make.
Those items listed as 'Admin Toys' will be available only to you - the
admins. Please do not annouce these items. They're included here for your
information only.
This is the most exciting version of genbbs yet, and we're thrilled to be
bringing it into production.
I encourage anyone with questions about the conversion to sub to the
GenConnect-L list, if you're not already. Simply send an email to
GenConnect-L-request(a)rootsweb.com with the word subscribe in
both the subject and as the only word in the body. Turn off all signature
files, please.
Once again ..... the upgrade will begin at midnight on Saturday, Sep 5, and
should take no more than 8 hours. Please help us announce this. There
will be no official notice once the conversion is completed. The new
version will be in effect for all to see, and will serve as notice.
Thank you for selecting GenConnect as your Query Management System. Our
goal is to keep improving it to meet the needs of our visitors and admins.
This is just the latest improvement, and we've all anxiously awaited this
moment.
Happy Hunting!!!!
The GenConnect Team ..... Randy, Pam and Nancy
List of new GenConnect Features:
Visitor Toys:
-------------------
Separate entry fields for subject and surnames ..... allows more
descriptive subjects (non-surname words won't matter)
Main page of each board displays the list of surnames for each query, in
addition to the subject .... allows for more surnames to be entered
'Print' option now expanded to include the entire thread (user's option)
Surname page will be auto-generated, and auto-updated weekly (more
frequently with admin intervention), and will now be alphabetized and
hotlinked to the query in which it appears.
Cookie support expanded to include "date ranges".
Faster, sleeker search engine.
Multiple-word surnames supported - including the capability of searching
for them.
New search options added to the Global Search ..... soundex (enhanced over
previous version), partial word match, whole word match, wildcard searching.
Admin Toys:
------------------
All of the above, plus .....
New Cookie support now includes the admin page specifically (especially
helpful when trying to edit or delete a very old query .... it can greatly
reduce the number of queries listed on the admin page, making it easier to
find the one you want.)
Surname field is case-insensitive ..... no need to edit for 'All Caps',
etc. (i.e. visitors can used mixed case or all lower case if desired ... it
won't affect the search engines).
if ?reconfigure page is entered from the admin page .... it now returns you
there (to the admin page) without having to go through the main page first.
With the addition of the new Surname field, non-surname words from the
Subject line will no longer make it to the search engine (nor to the
Surname page)
Case-insensitive subscribing/unsubscribing to/from the mailing lists ....
will reduce the number of cries for help from your visitors.
New admin function: List the email addresses of all submitters (not just
the mailing list) for your board.
