He was English and shipped his tobacco for the London trade. Gresham and Caulfield are both early and important English Surname. Lord Caulfield did have a large castle in Ireland from the time of the Plantation until it was destroyed in the Irish Rebellion of 1641. However, that did not make him Irish. Gresham came to Elizabeth City-County VA in about 1630, and worked his leased field at Strawberry Banks. We suspect his mom was a Gresham.

Our Timothy Cauffield is definitely Irish from Galway.
Did not read or write.
One son spelled it Caufield, but since his writing led to it being transcribed as CaNfield during the Civil War,
his son added a second F.
Another son used Coffield, moved to Kansas and Texas...
Our Timothy married a Hynes who he supposedly knew before they both migrated separately.
We visited what is left of Castle Caufield in County Armagh.

It could be both, and also Scottish. Mine were Scots Irish from Antrim (to Pennsylvania to Ohio). There might well be immigrants from other countries, too, with names that sounded similar and were anglicized.
So don't make any assumptions based on the name alone, trace your family back and find out. There is a very large possibility that you are not obviously related to other Coffields. You could also be related to Cofields, Caufields, and other variants, since surname spellings didn't really start to be standardized until about 200 years ago.

Does anyone know what nationality Coffield is? I have heard Irish, and I have heard English ("field" being an English ending for English names. I also would like to know when they came to the US and where they landed.
My family came to Virginia in 1961 via South Bend, Indiana, vis Dowagiac, Michigan. I keep hearing about Edenton, N.C. nad the Coffield house there.
Any info is much appreciated!
Betsy Coffield
