One of Ann PITMAN's son was born in 1728. This was Isham PITMAN. Isham died by Aug 1725 which would mean he was about 97 years old. He had some good genes.
Mrs. Wm Turmer says Joseph PITMAN b. 11 June 1724- d. 31 Aug 1761 was the son of Thomas & Ann PITMAN. I have not had time to check this one out.
I think LOTT PITMAN, d. by Jan 1790 in Robeson Co., NC, maybe be the eldest son since he was left the plantation. English law required that the eldest son inherit all the family estate unless a will was made to enclude your children. You did not have to name the eldest son in your will for him received his fair share of land.
I was going over Robert CAUFIELD deeds this week end.He lived in the same area as the BENNETS and COFFER's. Thomas PITMAN Jr. (1655-1730/1) was also in the area.
I don't think there is anything new on the COFFIELD's. I looked at my Virginia research book and decided I might be ble to find some COFFIELD information in Southampton Co.
area.I also want to check the Surry Co., VA area.
Sometimes I feel like I know these people. When I start reading the deeds I know where they lived.
I was going over Capt John SPIER's deeds an realized he owned most of what is now Halifax Co., NC.
Will be glad to do some NC looks up if need them.

Myra:
1) I live down in Sun City Center
2) I have a lot of Coffield material (going back to Gresham C. but was unsuccessful with my visit to GRO to get back further, I am concerned that there was a name change when he arrived in about 1631--there is considerable thought that the Caufields-the burgess etc- of Nansemond are from the same family); but have not worked that side of the family for several years-maybe there is something new now and I can restart.
3) were two Thomases. One Thomas Coffield transported in 1714. #2 One Thomas Coffer, son to Jane Bennet and John C.--a Thomas who had a daughter Ann who in turned married Thomas Pittman. Do you have a marriage date for your Ann Copher?; I thought her kids were born in the early 1720s, I am not sure how she could be squeezed in as the great-great granddaughter of John and Margaret Coker at that date?
Very confusing.
thanks for the info
Bill

Linda,
I spent the week-end going over some of the I. of W. Co., VA books I have and my notes. There are no records to prove the maiden name of Ann wife of Thomas PITMAN. Thomas COPHER/COFFER of Isle of Wight Co., VA names a daughter Ann PITMAN in his will. Written 1783. If this was our Ann PITMAN she would be about 73 or older.
Have no idea when Ann PITMAN died.

Thomas PITMAN III (1708-1755) and Ann COPHER are my direct ancestors. There sons were in Bladen Co., NC (now Robeson Co., NC) 1769. Lot PITMAN who inherited the plantation after his Mother's death was in Bladen by 8 Jan 1779. Have no idea when Ann died.

Sorry re last email-it appears to be sent (maybe) before I finished.
At any rate you mention a Thomas Coffer, who died about 1784 with a daughter Ann (married Pittman)--
Yours is much later viz:
In 1714, a Virginia patent was awarded to Thomas Coffeild. This date would support the Thomas Coffield born about 1670, married to an Olive with daughter Anne Coffield, who married Thomas Pittman in Isle of Wight in 1720 . in fact, Thomas Pittman died about 1755 with a will in Edgecomb Co. NC.
I would appreciate other IOW info
best, Bill
More, if you are a Coffer:
In 1720, the will of Richard Bennett, possibly son to Bennet, is recorded (Wills and Administrations of Isle of Wight County 1647-1800 by Blanche Adams Chapman, p. 48). It refers to a 1650 patent to Mr. John Coffer, Jane Coffer, her sons Robert and John Coffer, a Richard Coffer, Magdalen Coffer and appoints Jane Coffer and William Allen as executors. Coffer is an unusual name, rarer at that time than Coffield.
