Maybe this information appeared in two different books, but the source I'm familiar with is:
Commemorative Biographical Record of Washington County, PA, J.H. Beers & Co., p. 1047, 1893

Several Coffields arrived in 1799 on the "Happy Return," which took three
months to cross the ocean, ran out of fresh water early in the voyage,
lost most of its crew and nearly a third of its passengers (History of
Washington Countym Penna, 1885, p1047).
John Coffield (b1757, County Leitrim, Ireland), one of five brothers,
travelled on the "Happy Return" with his nine children; three died on the
ocean. John Coffield died soon after their arrival at New Castle.
Children Arthur Coffield (d6/23/1825), James Coffield, Ann Coffield,
Elizabeth Coffield and Lawrence Coffield migrated to Washington County,
Penna.
Lawrence Coffield married Elizabeth Rawden (b1773), another passenger on
the "Happy Return." Their son John Coffield died in 1891 in Adams County,
Illinois, as did Lawrence Coffield in 1848 (will probated 12/10/1851,
Washington Co, Penna); their son Thomas Coffield, a farmer in Belmont
County, Ohio, died in 1887. Son Joshua Coffield (1/17/1813-2/23/1900)
became a farmer in East Finley Twp, Washington County, purchasing the
Rawden farm on Wheeling Creek.

There is nothing so simple, unfortunately. There were likely many Coffields who came into the U.S. separately, at different times, and from different countries (certainly England, Ireland, and Scotland, if not others). Often they spelled their names differently and interchangeably before it became fixed as "Coffield" (e.g. Caufield).
The only thing you can do is work backward from what you know about your family, using census and other vital records, and eventually find naturalization records. These are all location-based, so make sure you record that information and provide it when comparing notes with other researchers.
Good hunting,

Gresham Coffield who likely came from England settled first in Elizabeth City VA (near Norfolk) in about 1632. There was a somewhat later group up in the northern part of VA and I believe an even later group landed in NY. I would guess most living descendants came from Southern Virginia, in or near what used to be Nansemond County. Some stayed there, a bunch went to NC by 1760 and then some of those split to GA, KY about 1780 and then everywhere. My Grandfather was John Coffield lived most of his life in WA. His father had gone from NC to IL in 1860. I do not know of any Cecil Coffields, sorry; but keep looking.

You seem very educated on the subject of Coffield's. I am just starting in my research of our family and just find myself at a loss as to where to begin. I know my GG Grandfather was John Coffield and his son Cecil is my G. Grandfather. Lloyd Dexter is my Grandfather and Craig Cecil is my father. I am interesting in tracing the family as far back as possible. In one of your postings I noticed you said there were originally four Coffield 's in the states (if I understood you correctly) do we all decend somehow from these four? I have so many questions and I'm so thirsty for this knowledge any help would be greatly appreciated! My email is jostertag(a)comcast.net I'd love to hear from you!

I don't have very much at all yet, except for the names mentioned in my previous posting. I've been working on the Monahan/Slife family lines. I'm not sure when I'll get to the Coffield line. I'll share what I find. Good luck!

I'm just begining to research my geneology and really don't know which information is going to be helpful to me. My father Craig Coffield was raised in Moundsville WV and my grandparents Lloyd Dexter Coffield and Sandra Lee Burgess live in Wheeling, my Great Grandfather was Cecil Coffield. Do you have any info pertaining to any of this? Thanks!
