At this point in time it is unlikely that anyone's grandfather was in the Civil War. So, what are Clarence's father's and grandfather's names and birthdates? Where were they living around 1860?
Without that information it will be difficult to determine any involvement.

Anne: Thanks again for your input. The only reason for my suspecting that Patsy's father was a Hodge is the fact that Henry Hodge was the guardian of her children until her marriage to Daniel Flanery. Of course, her mother could have been a Hodge, not her father. I not sure that Henry Hodge himself was her father, but he may have been her father-in-law. If her father was a Hodge, my best guess would be he was Robert Hodge, whence the name of her son, Robert Coffield.
I feel quite confident that the female age 50-60 in the entry for Robert Coffield in the 1830 Census is probably Patsy Coffield. Do you happen to know who Robert Coffield married?
If you have an interest in the Flannerys, contact me privately & I will send you the email addresses of several Flannery researchers.
There is actually a privately published book available on the Flannery family for $70.00, probably in the Family Tree Maker Book format. So far I haven't been able to get the author to respond to my requests to buy the book. It consolidates the research of most of the researchers that I am in contact with.
As you say, the Flannerys are a great maze, & there is more misinformation on the internet regarding them than information, including what is on my own Flannery web page. The biggest problem until only a few years ago is that most researchers were blithely unaware (or perhaps only nebulously aware) of the Flannerys in western Kentucky & southern Illinois in the late 1700s & early 1800s until one of Daniel Flanery's descendants contacted me.
Do you happen to know the names & families of Slaughter Coffield's children. So far, I've been guessing.

Halsey, I think I can help you with Robert Coffield. There are two Robert Coffields age 20-30 in the 1830 census in Livingston Co, KY. On page 017 is a Robert Coffield, who is not your Robert(I think he is the son of Spear Coffield.) On page 010 is a Robert Coffield and I feel confident he is your Robert. He lives next door to Henry C. Shouse who married Robert's sister Emily. And 7 doors down is William Grimes who married Robert's sister Nancy.
As to Patsy Coffield, I'm not so sure she is a Hodge, but could be. The Hodges were great friends of the Coffields from back in North Carolina and Charles married his wife in North Carolina. I have had no luck with figuring out the Flannerys. It's a giant maze.

Anne:
I'm glad you posted that information. That confirms what I had already concluded early this morning: that no Isaac Coffield in the 1820 & 1830 Censuses of Salem, Livingston Co., KY could possibly be a son of Charles Coffield, & I was working on a correction to what I had previously posted.
I had already decided that the easiest solution to the problem of Charles Coffield having 2 males under 10 in the 1810 Census, but only the one son, Robert Coffield, listed in Mary Carney Coffield's Will & in the Order Book that you had mentioned earlier, was to assume that Charles' 2nd son had died between 1810 & Dec. 1813, if he in fact existed (the 1810 entry could be wrong).
That leaves me with 2 problems to resolve:
1.) Is the Robt Coffield, age 20- 29, in the 1830 Census of Salem, Livingston Co., KY the son of Charles Coffield or some other Coffield?
2.) How to interprete the smudged out entry of 2 males under 10 found in the household of Patsy Flannery in the 1820 Census. If I could find her son Robert Coffield in the 1820 Census under his own household, I wouldn't be bothered by the obvious smudge: it would be an erroneous entry that had to be smudged out. If he was under 10 (from under 1 to 9) in 1810, he would under 20 (from just 1 year under 10 to 19) in 1820 & under 30 (from just under 20 to 29) in 1830. I think it is possible that the Census taker who smudged out the 2 in the 1820 Census meant to write in 1 male in another column (possibly 10-16), & that would have been Robert Coffield.
Since I have no Coffield database of my own (I didn't need one until now), but now I need to know what became of Charles & Patsy Coffield's children, & what the ancestries of Charles Coffield & Patsy ______ were. If Patsy hadn't married Daniel Flanery in 1818, I wouldn't need to know any of this Coffield stuff. If, as I now suspect, Patsy _____ was a Hodge, I also need to know how the Hodges figure into all this.
Pondering on all this has kept me up all night, actually most of the weekend, because I couldn't figure out a logical order for all this because the Coffield information provided by you & Bill was all new to me.
I'm still pondering over who all of Daniel Flanery's children were, what the name of his 1st wife was, & which of the Flanerys who settled with him in western Kentucky & southern Illinois were his brothers. At this point all I know is that his brother James Flanery was killed by indians in southern Illinois in 1789, & that their father, Thomas Flannary, died in Kaskaskia, Illinois in 1884.
All of this gives me a colossal headache.

Hi, I have attached some more information see if you recognize any names
etc. What I have is hear say and really have not confirmed that John and his
family were actually living in Ireland. I have only found one Coffield in
Ireland and still waiting to see if this old gentleman knows of any of the
line I mentioned. If you do have any history of the Coffield Clan send it.
Researching the name Coffield is translated in to different spellings in
Ireland one of which is Cauffield, also cofield, kaufield, caufield, etc.
So it is quit difficult in trying to find out what name is attached to
Coffield and when it was changed. Back in those days most people did not
read nor write and the names were written as sounded which is the reason for
so many different spellings of the name.
I am told that John Coffield was born in Ireland but cannot get proof of
that. John had five brothers, one of the grandsons Joshua Coffield came to
America sometime later. I have attached what I have thus far.
I am trying to find out what port they left from on the Schooner Happy
Return in Ireland and what date it was and is there a record of the Schooner
that can be found.
John Coffield, who was born in County Antrim or Leitrim, Ireland, about
1757so I am told . He was one of five brothers who were famous for their
physical powers, and had no equals in their native county for muscular
strength. He was a man of massive
frame, a splendid specimen of well-developed manhood. Mr. Coffield was
married in Ireland, and had nine children. In 1798 he took passage on the
ship "Happy Return," which was very filthy and carried all kinds of freight,
but as he was a poor man the cheapest had to suffice. After the vessel was a
few weeks out, drinking water became scarce, and before the voyage (which
lasted three months) was ended, nearly one-third of the crew and some of the
passengers died, three of Mr. Coffield's children being among the number. At
last the terrible journey was ended, and the family landed at New Castle,
Del., near which place they lived for a time, doing farm work, but the
father
soon after died, and the five children (Arthur, Lawrence, James, Ann and
Elizabeth) were obliged to earn a living for themselves and their widowed
mother, by working their way, the family finally reached Washington County,
Penn., and first located near Washington borough, where they remained a
short
time, then came to East Finley township, and locating on the present farm of
J. Wiley Patterson, the boys began to clear the land and make a home. The
mother died in 1811. One of the sons moved to Ohio and married a girl there
he also fought in the war of 1812.
I have attached the information I have of John Coffield tree. It is listed
as being born in Antrim 1757, but I have other info that shows they were from
Leitrim. But of course nothing is confirmed.

I beg to disagree with you that the Isaac Coffield in the 1820 and 1830 census of Livingston Co. Ky were two different men. According to his son Robert Coffield, Isaac Coffield, son of Gresham, was born in 1789 in NC. So in 1820 he was 31 years old, newly married in 1817 to Lucinda Ray, daughter of Joseph Ray. His father had died in 1816 and left most of his estate to Isaac. Isaac's brother had died around 1815 and Isaac was made guardian of Benjamin's children. This is how I see the 1820 Isaac Coffield census:
Isaac, 31, AD (son of Benjamin) about 13, Stephen (son of Benjamin) under 10, West (daughter of Benjamin) about 10, Marietta (daughter of Benjamin) about 6 and Lucinda (Isaac's wife) age 10-20.
Then in 1830: Isaac was 41, his son Horatio D was about 7, his son Fidella was age 5-10, his daughter Margaret was about 4, his daughter Lavinnia was about 1, another daughter under 5 I can not identify, Marietta (Benjamin's daughter) about 16, Lucinda age 20-30.

Bill: Thanks for the info about who Richard Wright was (Richard Wright Carney Harrell). The list of Grandchildren makes sense now, except the absence of Charles Coffield's other son (who I presume was Isaac Coffield).
I saw a genealogy of the Harrell family that doesn't mention either "Richard Wright" or "Carney Harrell".
I assume then that 'Stephen W. C. Harrell' is Stephen Wright Carney Harrell.

Polly was undoubtedly born Mary and called Polly.
My version does not have a comma after Richard Wright, Thus he was Richard Wright Carney Harrell

The reason that the grandson Slaughter Coffield Harrell is listed

Census Index as S. C. Harrell.
2.) Who was Richard Wright? There are Wrights in the Carney family
history, but this one is supposed to be a grandchildof Mary Carney
Coffield, but which daughter was his mother? The same one who married
George Harrell, that is, Polly Coffield? Compare the Joseph Wright found
on p. 2 of the 1820 Census of Salem, Livingston Co., KY:
Joseph Wright 200010-21010
3.) Who are Martha Maddrea & Slaughter Coffield Maddrea the children
of? Apparently a daughter who married a Maddrea, but which daughter?
The closest match that I can find is on p. 3 of the 1820 Census of
Salem, Livingston Co., KY:
John Maddera 100010-00100
NOTE: An Isaac Coffield is on the same page:
Isaac Coffield 110100-21100
This seems to a different person than the Isaac Coffield in the 1830
Census. See below.
One daughter of Slaughter Coffield & Mary Carney, Nancy Coffield,
married Kedar Powell. Their children were:
Richard K. Powell
John Powell
Mary K. Powell
4.) Although the above cited Will Abstract mentions only 5 children
for Charles S. Coffield, I believe that he had 6: The 1810 census shows
Charles' household as numbering 20010 males & 30100 females.
This would indicate that he had 2 sons under 10 & 3 daughters under 10
in 1810. The 4th daughter, Emily, apparently was born after 1810, or
later that year, but before 1813.
One of the sons is Robert, but who was the other son, & why his
absence from the list of Charles' children in Mary Coffield's Will?
If the 1810 Census is correct, neither son would have been over 13 in
1813. All of the grandchildren listed in Mary's Will were apparently under
age in 1813, & there is something truly awry here. I suspect that his omission
was an error.
The 1820 Census of Salem, Livingston Co., KY has the following
entries:
p. 2 Joseph Wright 200010-21010
p. 3 Isaac Coffield 110100-21100
John Maddera 100010-00100
p. 5 Daniel B. Flanery 000010-00100
This is Daniel B. Flanery who married Louisa M. Colyer Sep 13, 1820.
He was probably the last child of Daniel Flanery (who d. February
1820).
p. 12 Patsy Flannery (2)(?)0000-22010
Patsy Coffield married Daniel Flanery in 1818. Although Daniel Flanery
died too early in 1820 to be in the 1820 Census of Livingston, Co.,
KY, his remaining household is represented by by the presence of Patsy
Flannery in that Census with 2 females "under 10", 2 females "10-16", & 1 adult female
age "26-45" (herself). These 4 children are most surely the 4
daughters of Charles Coffield.
The 2 sons should be in the 1820 Census also, but I have been unable
to find them as householders. They may have been living with a
relative other than their mother. A curious thing about the enumeration of Patsy
Flannery's family in the 1820 Census: There is a smudged out entry for 2 males
"under 10" [indicated by myself as (2) above] & the start of what looks like a 2
in the males "10-16" column [indicated by myself as (?) above]. One
interpretation of this is to assume that the Census taker wrote 2 in the "under 10"
column, realized his mistake &smudged it out, but failed to finish writing a 2
in the "10-16" column. The point here is that the entries for the males was
hopelessly botched by the Census taker. My assumption would be that there was 1
male "10-16" & 1 male "16-18"
The 1830 Census of Salem, Livingston Co., KY has the following entrys:
p. 9: Daniel A. Flanery 11000100-01001000
This is the family of Daniel Anderson Flanery & Sarah Anderson. This
Daniel was the grandson of Daniel Flanery who married Patsy Coffield.
p. 10: Robt Coffield 20001000-00001001
This Robert Coffield is age 20-30. Surely this is Robert Coffield son
of Charles S. Coffield. He is age "20 to 30". This compares quite well
with his being "under 10" in the 1810 Census. I believe that the female age
"50 to 60" could be his mother, Patsy Flannery. However, she could be his wife's
mother.
p. 11: Isaac Coffield 02000100-30101000
This Isaac Coffield is age "30-40". Could this be the other son
"10-16" of Charles S. Coffield found in the 1810 Census? I believe he is.
There is a discrepency in his age range to be accounted for. If he was actually
"20-30" that would agree quite well with the male child age "under 10" in the
1810 Census. Was he exactly 30 in 1830? Hence born 1800?
What we have then would be:
Children of Charles S. Coffield & Patsy [Hodge?]:
2 sons:
Isaac Coffield b. 1800 [30 to 40 in 1830 Census]
Robert Coffield b. 1801-1810 [20 to 30 in the 1830 Census]
4 daughters; 2 under 10 in 1820, 2 10-16 in 1820:
Polly Coffield b. 1805-1811
Nancy b. 1805-1811
Patsy b. 1805-1811
Emily b. 1805-1811
I don't know if this will clarify anything or not. Does anyone have a gedcom of their Coffield data.

I have Coffileds, but many questions. Here's my line-- all in the Wheeling, West Virginia area (right across the river from Belmont County, OH):
Paternal grandmother, Hulda Monahan, daughter of George Blattler and Mary COFFIELD. Hulda married Leo Joseph Monahan.
Hulda Monahan, after death of parents George Blattler and Mary COFFIELD, adopted by Henry Neuhardt and Catherine COFFIELD.
Catherine COFFIELD and siblings Ella, Elizabeth, Mary and Nettie COFFIELD, all daughters of Anna COFFIELD (spouse unknown).
Ella COFFIELD marries into Delbrugge family, then Heintz family. Has 2 children: Ballard (?) and Henry Heintz.
Elizabeth COFFIELD marries into Cope family.
Mary COFFILED also marries a Blattler.
Nettie COFFIELD believed to have moved to Canada and whereabouts unknown.
I'd be curious to see if you recognize anyone in this line.

Thanks--yes I see Gresham's will now. If Demsey was 45 or more in 1810, was then born before 1765; I show Gresham was married in 1768 and wife Sessums born in 1749--I need to see if I have any sources for these vitals, may have to back up the dates a bit

Thanks for the correction to Census data-that makes a lot more sense. Robert and Benj (sons to Gresham) were prob born, then in 1770s not long after the marriage to Patr. Sessums.
Who do you think that the old Demsey Coffield may be. Could he be the uncle of Charles S. Coffield. Demcey Coffield married Westcoat Carney in 1768; and of course the Carneys moved with some of the Coffields to Edgecombe

The Census data that I originally posted had the males & females reversed. That was an old text file & I can't remember where I got it.
Below is the correct listing for Coffields in the 1810 Census, from a AIS Index at ancestry.com:
1810 COFFIELD, BENJAMIN Livingston County KY p. 148 10010-10100-00
1810 COFFIELD, CHARLES S. Livingston County KY p. 147 20010-30100-00
1810 COFFIELD, DEMSEY Livingston County KY p. 148 02001-40010-01
1810 COFFIELD, GRISHAM Livingston County KY p. 147 00101-00001-00
1810 COFFIELD, ROBERT Livingston County KY p. 147 10010-10100-00
Mary (nee Carney) Coffield, widow of Slaughter Coffield (m. 1770), filed her Will Dec 13, 1813. The Will mentions quite a few grand-children. They are listed in "Bertie County North Carolina Wills" on p. 507. [I can send you an Image file of that page]. The listing is quite confusing.
One daughter married a Wright? Had son Richard Wright.
Her daughter Polly Coffield married George P. Harrell. My interpretation of the Will is that Polly was a widow, but perhaps both parents were deceased? I'll have to take another look at the Images. Children: Slaughter Coffield Harrell, Carney Harrell, Henry Harrell (listed twice), Nancy Powell Harrell, Mary Harrell, W. Harrell, Sylvester C. Harrell, Stephen W. C. Harrell, Celia Harrell, Emilla Elizabeth Harrell
Her daughter Martha Coffield married an unknown Maddrea, had one child, Slaughter Coffield Maddrea.
The children of her son Charles Coffield are listed as Robert, Polly [married 13 Sep 1820 William Flanery, son of Daniel Flanery], Patsy, Nancy, & Emily. Their mother, Patsy Coffield I believe is mentioned as Charles' widow. This would seem to indicate that he died between 1810 & 1813. I do strongly suspect that the mother Patsy was a Hodge. Her name could very well have been Martha "Patsy" __________.
There are several Hodges in the 1810 Census of Livingston Co., KY: Robert Hodge on p. 147, Benjamin Hodge & Henry Hodge, Sen on p. 148. Elijah Flanery, Sr, Daniel Flanery, & Elijah Flanery are on p. 149. The surname is unfortunately misspelled in the Index as "Flanerey".
Daniel Flanery married "Patsy Coffield" 3 Mar 1818, & died quite early in 1820, before the Census; his widow, Patsy Flannery is listed in the 1820 Census as 00000-02201. I would think that the 4 female children were Polly, Nancy, Patsy, & Emily Coffield. I haven't checked the 1820 Census for the son, Robert Coffield. I wonder if Daniel Flanery legally adopted the Coffield children? [The Daniel B. Flanery listed in the 1820 Census was Daniel Flanery's son. This confused Flannery researchers for awhile. Some are still confused.]

Thanks for the Coffield of Livingston listing--I have a few IDs
Gresham, Grayson or Grisham was of Edgecombe 1747-1816 (will recorded in Livingston--does someone have it??), son to Benj C and Beatrice Speir.
His sons Robert and Benj, you have listed.--they appear to have been born in the early 1780s
Charles S. was certainly Charles Slaughter, as written in his fathers (Slaughter C) will of Chuckatuch (son to William and Mary). I have the will and the survey run for Charles on May 15, 1786. Your 1810 Census shows him not over 26 and thus born after 1784,, I guess a 2 yr old tcould have a survey, but would you check the census dates again?
Your Isaac of 1820, I have a letter he wrote in 1816 to his cousin Major David Coffield in Enfield Halifax County. It was actually Isaac S and he refers to another cousin S. W. Coffield. Isaac in the letter is ext. neg. on a Widow Coffield. Isaac refers to notes of 6 or 7 years against his father (who I figure must be dead) and he says that Mr. Robert Hodge is very friendly to inform me what to do. Could the widow Coffield be Patsy?
Also I have a note that Charles S. Coffield actually married a Martha (as written in his mothers [Mary] will)--which was interchangeable with Patsy, I believe, in those days.
