My husband is a descendant of Arthur Coffield through his son Gen. John

you have and will exchange what I have. I received info and pictures

Linda,
My Rebecca's father was Pleasant Wesley Coffelt, born 1815 in
Tennessee. I am uncertain of who her mother was, because on her death
certificate she lists Anna Crouch as her mother. I have found census
records listing Cloe as her mother's name and find a marriage record
for Pleasant and Clary Ritchey. I wish I could see the original, to
be sure that it is Clary Ritchie and not a very flourishing Cloe
Crouch.
Pleasant's father was Jacob Coffelt son of Philip. Philip was the son
of Johan Christopher Kauffeldt - one of the original 3 brothers who
came to America in the late 1730s.
The book Kauffelts (Coffelt) in America is available from Coffelt and
Coffelt Publishing, 1610 Redwood Lane, Davis, California 95616. The
price a few months ago was $15.00/postage included. The couple has
also written a novel type book on the life and times of some of the
Coffelts that is also $15.00.
Good luck in your search!

Hi, where were your Pugh's around 1770-1780s? I have a couple of Pugh's in
my genealogy that married into my Taylor and Brown lines in Virginia in that
time period. Ruby
I am looking for information on James I. Cofield. He is the son of
Nelson and Jane Cofield. Nelson and James where married in Qwinette
County Georgia. In the 1860 Dale County Alabama census James I. is
married to Amanda and they have a daughter named Tincy J. and they are
living in the house with Nelson. By 1870 Nelson is living in Bullock
County Alabama and James and Amanda are gone and haven't been able to
find them anymore. Tincy shows up again in 1876 when she marries John
Williams and at the time she is living with her uncle, Ellie Segars.
Can anyone tell me what became of James I. Coffield and his wife
Amanda?

Linda,
The Kauffelts (Coffelt) in America was published in 1991 by Robert and
Joan Wikman Coffelt. It is available directly from them for $15.00.
It lists known descendants of the first brothers Kauffeldt who arrived
in America in the late1730s at Philadelphia, PA. They settled at
York, PA, moved on to Shenandoah Valley, VA, Tennessee, Kentucky and
all points west. The name Kauffeldt has had many (mis)spellings that
have stuck over the years - Coffield being one.
In doing my research, I have found Coffields arriving from Ireland, so
there ARE other folks besides the German descendants. James may be
from one of those.
My great-great grandparents marriage record is filed in Jasper County,
MO under Rebecca Cauffield and William Wallis. They are actually
Rebecca Coffelt and William Wallace. In this instance, since, if it
sounds/look/bears any resemblance to what I am looking for, I
investigate the name, it paid off big. That is my genealogy tip for
the day!
Happy hunting,
Claire Wichelmann

Linda,
I am realated to the Dunmore/Shenandoah Co., VA Coffields ... once through
my grandmother [Peter Coffield] and another through my grandfather [George
Coffelt] ... Who are you looking for?
Amy
This is my FIRST posting to the COFFIELD List.
I am responding to the query by Claire in regard to the identity of James F.
Coffield, supposedly born 1825 Darke County, Ohio.
James (Freeman) Coffield was known as "Freeman" Coffield, farmer of Darke
County, Ohio. He was the son of "General" John C. Coffield and Elizabeth
Slayback. In regard to speculation about his birth being in Darke County,
Ohio, 1825, I do not know. Gen. John C. Coffield and Elizabeth Slayback
were married in 1819 in Butler County, Ohio. Sources: PERSONAL SKETCHES OF
PROMINENT MEN AND PIONEERS, Clark County, Ohio (incomplete citation -sorry!)
; PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL ALBUM OF GREENE AND CLARK COUNTIES, OHIO
(Chapman Bros., Chicago 1890). Page 556-557; and marriage records of Butler
County Ohio.
I am very pleased that someone wants to know something about this COFFIELD
line. For many years, I have felt all alone in the world of Coffield
genealogy. I have a ton of information about the descendants of Arthur
Coffield, born Ireland about 1753, lived in Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio,
Kentucky, and died in Clark County, Ohio about 1849. Trouble is, I have
never found any record of Arthur's death and burial location. I keep hoping
that there is an obituary someplace. Arthur had AT LEAST 7 children. He
lived to the age of 96, as reported by grandson George W. Coffield in the
above referenced CHAPMAN BROS. BIOGRAPHICAL collection of 1890.
(Claire: please fill me in on your "Coffelts in America" book -- I've had
difficulty in the past separating the COFFIELDs and COFFELTs in Ohio.)
Linda Pugh jlpugh(a)cqc.com
Hi Linda
My name is David Coffel and there are Pughs in my family and I was
wondering if we had ancestors in common. My ggg grandfather was born circa
1744 in Ireland (we think).

Can someone on this list identify the family James COFFIELD came from?
Do the
connections go back to Shenandoah Co., VA? The PITSENBARGER
connections do.
Was James -really- born in Darke Co., OH, or did he move there from
somewhere else? I have checked my Coffelts in America Book and I do
not find any of these names.
