David,
I read with interest your message to the Coffield mailing list. My great
great grandfather Isaac S. Coffield, the son of Gresham Coffield and his
wife Patience Sessums, was born in Edgecombe Co., NC, in 1789. Isaac
migrated to Crittenden Co., KY, with his parents Gresham and Patience in the
late 1790s or 1800. Gresham was born before 1750 and was the son of
Benjamin Coffield who died in Edgecombe Co., NC, in 1770. The first Coffield
that we have found record of was Gresham Coffield apparently from England
who had a land patent of 200 acres in Isle of Wight Co., Virginia, in 1638.
The name "Grissom" also appears in some records of our branch of the family.
Do you know where in North Carolina your Thomas Nathan Coffield was born?

Last week I finally got my web site on line. As we have Coffield
ancestors, I have a page devoted to the Coffield surname. I will have
more details of names and dates later on. Please check it out and offer
suggestions. Thanks to all of you. URL of site is:

I was so excited to find this mailing list the other day. My name is
Cofield. My branch lost the second f somewhere in Georgia during the
early 1800s. My ggggrandfather is Thomas Nathan Cofield, b. 1790 NC,
died ca 1872 Randolph County, Alabama. He married Nancy Hughes in
Morgan County, Georgia Dec. 22, 1814. He owned land in Putnam County,
Georgia near a Gresham Coffield, who is probably his father and
probably the same Gresham who was son of Benjamin Cofield, died ca
1770 in Edgecombe or Halifax County, NC, however I have never been
able to find proof of these connections. Gresham or Grissom is a
common name in my branch of the Cofields, My great-grandfather was
Cosby Grissom Cofield. I have quite a lot of material on descendants
of Thomas Nathan Cofield to share. David Cofield
