Hi Joe,
I have no information about your Wm Bembrey Coffield, but I'm going to
put it on the Coffield mail list, perhaps someone there can help you.
Sylvia
ORIGINS: Coffield (Coffield, Cofield, Cockfield, Kaufield, Caufield,
Kauffeld, Kauffelt, Coffelt) -
From a review of the Coffelt family history excerpts which Sylvia sent me
(hardcopy), and from poking around in World Family Tree CDs, I have found
that there are at least four countries which originated the various
Coffield-related surnames in the U.S.:
The English line of Coffield (Cofield, Cockfield) immigrated from England to
eastern (Isle of Wight County) Virginia, andthen on to northeastern (Bertie
and Halifax Counties) North Carolina, and then to Mecklenburg County, NC.
Anne Cofield m. Thomas Pittman III in VA before 1723
Elizabeth Coffield m. Elisha Pittman (nephew of Thomas Pittman III, son of
Ambrose Pittman) in VA about 1754
One German line of Coffield (Kaufield, Caufield, Kauffeld, Kauffelt,
Coffelt) originated in the Rhineland Palatines an immigrated in the
1720-1740s to the large Palatine community of Pennsylvania.
Elias (Kauffeldt) Coffelt
[A possible second German line lived in Frederick Co, VA]
The Greek line of Coffield resulted from anglesizing "Confino".
The Irish line immigrated with the surname "Coffee".
FREQUENCY OF OCCURENCE: (mind-numbing statistics) -
from: http://www.census.gov/genealogy/www/namesearch.html
we find that a sample taken by the US Census contained 88,799 different
surnames. Coffield, etc statistics are:
NAME %freq cum. freq rank
COFFIELD 0.001 72.210 11096
COFIELD 0.002 63.706 5204
CAUFIELD 0.001 73.413 12461

LOSS OF SURNAME DISTRIBUTION MAPS
Sadly, Ed Hamrick has discontinued his webpage providing four U.S. Surname
Distribution maps for various years between 1850 and 1990
(http://www.hamrick.com/names/). This was his recent posting on the webpage:
I regret to say that this service has been temporarily
discontinued. It is
hosted on the same server as Hamrick Software's order-processing for
VuePrint, and has become so popular that it has overloaded the server,
making it difficult for people to register VuePrint. I'm
considering charging
for the service at either $1.00 per map or $5.00 per map, using my
online
credit card charging service. If enough people send me e-mail (at
names(a)hamrick.com) saying they'd be willing to pay for access to the
maps, I'll reinstate the service and add the interface to the
credit card
charging service.
Regards,
Ed Hamrick
If any of you had a chance to view or download some of the surname maps, you
might give him some feedback.
SOLICITATION FOR COFFIELD-L
Regarding Sylvia's question: How did I find the Coffield researchers who I
solicited last month?
I got the initial names from the most likely RootsWeb researchers and a
smattering of submitters to Internet pages (Everton's, Yate's Computerized
Ancestor, World Family Tree, and GENDEX).
Please do contact and encourage participation by any one you think could
benefit.
Thanks,
Craig Crouch
Hi All,
Craig started the introductions. I sent my info to him personally not to
the list, so I think he thought I didn't want it there for everyone, but I
do so here it is again.
I'm Sylvia Sligar. I live in Orange, CA which is in Southern CA, the home
of Disneyland and other tourist attractions. My husband, Dick, is the
Coffelt descendant, and a bird watcher, an amateur astronomer, and as he
says an "estate keeper" which means he is in charge of repairing anything
which breaks or is eaten by termites. We have lots of termites as we live
in an old avacado grove. Termites are not fussy.
I'm the genealogist, been interested since the early 80's, but did little
until I retired from 29 1/2 years of teaching in 1989. We have been to Ohio
& Marshall Co, WV twice so that I could do research. Besides genealogy, I
garden, volunteer at our branch of the National Archives and the genealogy
room of the Huntington Beach Pub Lib, and go to a gym 3 or 4 days a week
trying to keep the problems associated with advancing age from catching up
with me. Our 3 children have been out of the nest for many years, and
unfortunately have little interest in their origins, but I keep informing
them.
I have always been interested in joining Roots-L mail list, but terrified
of the idea of receiving 100 - 200 messages a day, until Craig sent me his
email with the suggestion of a Coffield mail list and the address of all
the other surname lists. I have joined 5 lists this week and the volume of
mail is 1 or 2 messages a day from each list. This I can handle.
By the way Craig, I'm curious how did you know about me and my interest in
Coffelts? I'm in contact with 3 other Coffield researchers, but they were
not on your original email list. I have since informed them of your
becoming the owner of this list and I hope they join. The more researchers
the greater chance of our being helpful to each other.
Our Coffelts are:
George Coffelt 1733 PA - 1784
married either or both
Anna Eleanor Wolf
Clara Ann Wolf abt 1740 - after Mar 1808
they had 10 children
1. George, b abt 1758 m Elizabeth Voltz
2. *Mary Ann/ Ann Mary 1762 - 1836/37 Marshall Co (W)VA
m Martin Wetzel 1757 Rockingham Co, VA - 1829 Ohio/Marshall Co
(W)VA
11 children
3. Susanna m Peter Sine
4. Margaret d 1851
5. Magdalene m Abraham Wiseman
6. Clara d 1854
7. Christina m Peter Sine
8. Johann Jacob d bef 1850 (W)VA
m Jane McCreary abt 1779 MD - bet 1860/70 (W)VA
9 children
The above children are not in order and I seem to have misplaced two of
them. The * is Dick's direct line. The above info is from Naomi Lowe, a
descendent of #2 child, Bill Coffield and Belle Deaver, both descendants of
#8 child. These three people shared a great deal of info with me. Using all
the Coffield vital records from Marshall Co, I was able to piece more of #
8 family together. (I'm in the process of doing the vital records for Ohio
Co at this time.)
With the help of Beck Falin, the WV coordinator, I have been able to have
much of Marshall Co, WV records that I have had researched posted. These
vital records cover selected surnames that I am interest in from 1853 - the
present for deaths and to about 1920 for births and marriages. If you are
interested the address is:
http://www.rootsweb.com/usgenweb/wv/marshall/
I plan on posting Ohio Co when I finish, at present I'm still working on
the the birth index.

ACCOMPTS of the TRISTRAM AND JANE
edited by Martha W. Hiden
"A BOOKE OF ACCOMPTS FOR THE SHIPPE CALLED THE TRISTRAM AND JANE OF LONDON
WHICH CAME FROM VIRGINIA ANNO DOMINI 1637"
Servant: Anne Turner, a maid
1100 pounds (?)
master: Gresham Coffield
----------------------------------------------------------
Notes: (pages 100 and 101)
"We learn of Robert Partin and John Neale, who bought two servants each,
through the following items. Captain Francis Hook, Esquire, on August 9,
1637, patented 100 acres in Elizabeth City County adjoining Thomas Olds and
John Neale, "the said land being in the tenure and occupation of Robert
Partin and Gresham Covell.".....
..... Gresham Coffield, who bought two servants, is identical with "Gresham
(Gressom) Coffield" who on August 14, 1638, patented in partnership with
Thomas Stamp 200 acres in Isle of Wight County. "Coffield" is the same as
"Covell", and this is the same person previously mentioned as holding land
in Elizabeth City County with Robert Partin."
