Does anyone of the list have any information on an Elizabeth Coffee and
Catherine Coffee, spinster, of Monmouth Co, NJ in 1751? Both women were
sued, in seperate lawsuits, by Cornelius Emans in 1751. The only paper
that seems to remain from the suit is the warrant for their arrests and
a copy of Cornelius' complaint. The papers give no clue as to any
relationship between Cornelius and the ladies. But at the same time
Emans sued seven other people (George Parker, John Applegate, Thomas
Romine, Samuel Romine, Layton Romine, Rebecca Romine, and Gertrude
Romine). They are all said to have broken into his "close", torn down
and carried away sections of his fence and trampled all over his grass.
None of the papers give a clue to any relationship, not even just being
neighbors, nor a motive (boundary dispute, right of way dispute, estate
disagreement?)
So if anyone has any clue as to who Elizabeth and Catherine might
have been, it would be greatly appreciated. Right now I don't know
whether Coffee or Coffey is the correct spelling of the name.
