My Coffey ancestor, Mary Coffey, was born about 1819 in Cloghagalla
Aighter, Civil Parish of Aughrim, County Galway Ireland. This Townland
is about 4 miles west of Ballinasloe and is therefore on the
Galway/Roscommon border.
Mary Coffey never left Ireland, but died there and is buried in
Kilconnell Abbey ruins. She married William Burke and bore 4 children,
one of them my great grandmother. One of Mary Coffey's kin, probably a
first cousin, Joseph Coffey, age 11, came with his father, Joseph Coffey
age 40, to St John Newfoundland in 1847 with four siblings, Ellen (20),
Ann (14), James (9), and Catherine (3½). A 4th, Bridget, was already in
Boston MA working as a maid. They arrived in May 1847 on the Ship Amazon.
The father and one of the siblings, Ellen. died on Patridge Island,
father Joseph Coffey in May and Ellen in November. After a time spent in
the orphanage at St. John, Joseph came down to Boston and married twice,
fathering a large brood. They were in the fish business around 1880 and
into the new century.
The Irish Coffeys come mostly from West Cork, Galway, and South Roscommon.

Dear Listers,
Many thanks for a speedy response to my question. So the name is of Irish origin.I had wondered if it was Caribbean! Very interesting,
Best wishes,
Mary
My maternal grandfather was named Frank M. Coffey and lived in Okla. I believe my ancestors immigrated from somewhere in the East. I have a few names but not much. This is what I have found: Coffey is angelicized from the gaelic O'Cobthaigh. Same stock as O'Driscolls, county Roscommon-Uimaine branch of O'Maddens of County Westmeath. You may be able to find more at http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlkik/uimaine.htm .
