Hello,
I am trying to learn more about Allein Coffey (1900-1986) who lived in
Church Hill, Jefferson County, Mississippi, and Natchez, Adams County,
Mississippi. I have a letter from her to my great aunt from around 1967. Other related
names may be West, Dixon. My Allein ancestors lived in Church Hill in the
early to late 1800s. This letter says Allein is my aunt's cousin.
Thanks,
Peggy Dyas

I wonder if this could be the daughter of Mott and
Mary A. Coffey who
appeared in the 1910 Jefferson Co., MS census? They
had a daughter Aline
[sic], age 8. Other children were John D., age 12,
[?] Belle, age 10; and
Sallie Coffey, sister to Mott, age 45.
Mott was born in MS, father in TN, mother in MS. All
of the others,
including parents were born in MS.
Others in the household are Adeline Ford and Roberta
Ford, both black
servants.
See 1910 Jefferson Co. census, Beat 3, ED7, Sheet 9A,
dwelling/family 189.
I am unable to find Mott in my files. However, there
is a James A. Coffey
in Lafayette Co., MS who enlisted in 1861 and was a
member of the MS State
Militia known as the Mott Guards. Many ex-soldiers
were known to name a son
after a military leader and esp. if the father served
under them.
This is what my notes contain:
James A. Coffey: Enrolled in MS State Militia known
as Mott Guards on May
17, 1861.
He was 29-years old at the time and lived in Lafayette
Co., MS. His company
arrived in Richmond via rail on Jun 12, 1861 where it
was enrolled in CSA as
Co. B, 19th Reg, Inf. Mississippi Volunteers. He was
sick in hospital at
Richmomd Apr 4, 1862 to Jul 1862. Admitted to
Howard's Grove Hosp, wounded
at Bethesda Church May 16, 1864 and transferred to
Danville Hosp. May 17th.
Returned to duty Aug 3. Wounded in neck and admitted
to Howard's Grove
Hosp. Sep 15, 1864. Also wounded in lower right and
arm. Wounds suffered
in Battle of Petersburg. On Oct 8, furloughed for 60
days. Paroled at Holly
Springs, MS Jun 5, 1865.
Good luck with your search!
Jack
