Society, Vol. 25, p250, 1927, Marriages in Floyd Co.,

newsletters, issues Mar. 1993 and Mar. 1996.
Ambrose Coffee <sic> married Lucinda Day on 8 Nov.

of Floyd County KY:, Court Book 3, p172, Nov. Term of
Court: Monday, 18th of Nov. 1818, Ordered a subpoena
be issued against Reuben Day in whose custody the
children of Ambrose Coffe <sic> now are, to appear
next court and show cause why said children shall not
be bound out. p175, Dec. Term: Monday the 21st of
Dec. 1818, Ordered that the children of Ambrose Coffee
be bound unti Reuben Day, farmer, as per roster of
ages files. p183, Feb. Term: Monday the 21st day of
Feb. 1820, the Indentures of Reubin Coffee, Elijah
Coffee, Exedkial Coffee and Irenia Coffee was approved
and ordered.
From IGI, and CC Newsletter, Mar., 1993: Ambrose, son
of Elijah and Margaret married 19 Jul. 1852 to Nancy
Stacy.

born KY; Andrew?, age 10, born KY; Margarett, age 7,
born KY; Elijah, age 4, born KY, and Wm. C., age 1,
born KY
There was an Ambrose Coffee <sic> who married Nancy
Stacy Jul. 19, 1852 in Morgan Co. He was a son of an
Elijah.
I am not certain which line these particular Coffee's
belong to. The Ambrose mentioned here MIGHT be the
Irish emigrant who was at Fort Boonesboro with Daniel
Boone. This Ambrose was born c1759 in Dublin, IR and
came to the US as a young boy.
In any event, I cannot connect the below mentioned
Ambrose, and son Elijah, to the Edward Coffey line.

My Coffee, Coffey lineage begins with my gg grandparents
Louisa Caroline Coffee b. 24 Dec 1859 Morgan Co., KY
d. 24 Mar 1923 Johnson Co., KY
she married John Ellis O'Bryan b. 5 Dec 1858 Morgan Co., KY
d. 21 Mar 1923 Johnson Co., KY
Louisa's parents were Elijah Coffee b.1799 KY
d.abt 1873 in Licking River, Morgan Co., KY
and Elizabeth Bowen b. 1833 VA
d. Barnett's Creek, Johnson Co., KY
Elizabeth was Elijah Coffee's second wife. His first was Margaret "Peggy" Patrick.
I am still at work on this line, in particular on Elijah's father Ambrose Coffee (Coffey). If anyone is related to this line or could provide any comparison of my info please let me know.
Also I have some new research (well new to me!! LOL!) on Elizabeth Bowen's family if anyone is interested.
Glad to share what I have anytime!

Hello List:
I understand that an Elizabeth Bronson did probably marry a William
Coffey but do not know if this is the same as Wm Martin or Martin Wm
Coffey. Jack is correct in stating that the use of middle initals or names
was not that common of a practice in those days. If memory serves me I
believe that the use of middle names or initals came more towards the mid
1800's. Of course as Jack states, there are always exceptions.

I've never heard that Martin married a Bronson. Most
researchers that I know who list a wife, name her as
Nancy Heriford (sic) who he married on Dec. 1, 1817 in

seen any names until the mention of Bronson here.
He and Nancy produced at least one son, James, born
1818, who married Martha Tucker in 1836, Wayne Co.,
KY.
The only "problem" that I have is with some on-line
ancestries which assign middle names and/or initials
to some of these early men. Most did not have them,
and it is doubtful that documentation can be produced
showing them with middle names or initials.

Hi you Coffey relatives,
I have noticed a lot of e-mails during the past few days about Martin Coffey (1762-1867) Because he is my GGG Grandfather I thought that I should add my comments to this forum.
My connection to Martin is as follows:
My father is William Herbert Coffey
Grandfather is Thomas Coleman Coffey
GGrandfather is William Martin Coffey
GGGrandfather is James Coffey son of Martin Coffey and Nancy Herriford or Hereford or Heriford or Hansford. I believe that the correct spelling is Heriford or Herriford. This is base
John and Jane are not known to have had a son named

Does anyone else out there have a problem with this except me? All the
documentation I have seen and information I have been given by others
indicates that Martin William Coffey who married Elizabeth Bronson was a
son of Chesley J. Coffey and Jane Cleveland, not John Coffey and Jane
Graves. Any comments????
No offense to you Patti, as I would presume that you know and are fairly
certain of your own family lineage. I just want to make sure that I have
correct information and don't pass misinformation to others down the line.

John Coffey named his children in his will of March 1774 as James, William,
John, Edmond, Thomas, Reuben, Benjamin, Winnifred Moran and Betty Fields.
I show Winifred as born abt 1730; William, abt 1731; John, abt 1733; Edmond,
abt 1735; Thomas, 7 Mar 1742; Reuben, 1744; Benjamin, abt 1747; and
Elizabeth, abt 1749.
I also show that Martin Coffey was the son of Chesley Coffey and Jane
Cleveland and a brother to my husband's Chesley Coffey, Jr. The dates for his being
a son of John and Jane do not work.

The only birth information I have for Annister (or Ann Ester) is "abt 1684
in Essex County, VA."
I show her as the eighth and last child of William and Elizabeth Powell. Her
1744 will shows her daughter as "Annister Coffee" and "Annisters Coffe" but
her own signature is shown as "Ann (A) Duling".
Patti
As most researchers give Ann Ester Powell's birth date as 1684, it doesn't
appear she could have married Edward Coffey much before 1699, when she would
have been age 15.
Patti
Jesse, I didn't have a marriage date for Edward and Ann, but had entered
"abt 1699" because their first child, John, was born in July 1700. I have a lot
of info on John and wife Jane Graves (Graves is another of my husband's
lines) and their nine children. Is that your line?
Where did you find that the first Edward Coffey had the middle name Joshua?
It was rare to find anyone back that far that had a middle name.
In Edward's will of 14 Feb 1716, Coffey is spelled Coffeey, Cofey and
Coffey, so it's no wonder we see various spelling today.
Patti
Hello,
I have been trying for sometime to find the parents of James Sylvester
Coffey, born April 8, 1813, Rockingham Co. North Carolina. He married Sarah Carter,
March 14, 1837 in Shelby County Indiana. He died Oct. 13, 1876, Shelby
County Indiana. All I know is that he had a brother named Lewis Coffey born about
1823 N.C.
If anyone would have even a trail of his siblings or parents it would be
great.
Thank you
Cheri

My Coffy connection is great great grandmother Maria Coffy/Coffey who
married William Burke, around 1842 probably in Aughrim, County Galway,
or a nearby parish. Because of te paucity of Irish church records
available, I can'y be positive of much during the early 19th century in
rural Galway. The couple lived in Aughrim Parish on the Burke farm, in
the Burke family for a long time I assume. They had 4 surviving children,
Catherine (my great grandmother) b. 1844 married John Nicholson in
Brooklyn NY about 1869.
Mary b. 1846 married Martin Deely in Aughrim about 1872.
John b. 1853 married Sara Delaney in Aughrim in 1891
Anne b. 1856 married John Hession in Clontuskert in 1891.
Catherine was the only child to emigrate. She went to American in the
1860s and worked as a cook before she was married.
Mary Burke Deeley's youngest son, Joseph, died in 1953 in the home of
two maiden ladies who were his cousins MaryAnne and Ellen Coffey. The
location was Ballinew in Aughrim Parish, the home they occupied after
they sold the family holdings at Boston farm nearby. These women were
descended from Coffeys who lived on Boston Farm in and around
Cloghagalla Eighter, a townland in Aughrim just south of the William
Burke farm. I suspect, but have not been able to prove, that Maria
Coffy/Coffey b. about 1819, was the daughter of John Coffy and Brigid
Jennings of Boston Farm.

My husband's Coffey line runs like this, but I've never seen anything but a
theorythat Chesley was the son of Edward Joshua Coffey, son of Edward and Ann
Ester Powell Coffey. It seems to be well established that he was not the son
of Edward and Ann Ester.
Edward Coffey (1670-1716) and Ann Ester Powell
Edward Joshua Coffey (abt 1700, Essex Co, VA--Feb 1775, Albermarle Co, VA)
and unknown Martin. He married Grace Cleveland about 1738, when he was about
37.
Chesley Coffey (abt 1720, VA--abt 1760, NC) and Jane Cleveland
Chesley Coffey, Jr. (1755-1818, Maury Co, TN) and Margaret "Mary" Baldwin
Felicia Coffey (1787-1865) and James Turnbo
