Ancestry.com has opened up several of its military databases for no charge!
In remembrance this Memorial Day, these databases are open (and free) from
May 26 until June 10.
HOWEVER, PLEASE NOTE:
These databases are free *only * when accessed through the PaCivilWar site
at http://www.pacivilwar.com/freepension.html
Although hosted by a PA
Civil War site, these databases give free access to the vets from all
the states in the database. These aren't Free Trials and no credit card
is needed. You may be asked to register with a user name and password
to access the databases.
The databases include:
**FREE 1890 Census Veterans Schedule
Often used as a head-of-household substitute for the 1890 Federal Census
that was destroyed by fire, the Veterans' Census of Union and some
Confederate soldiers is one of the newest census digitized by Ancestry.
**FREE Civil War Pension Index

genealogy information.
**FREE Disabled Soldiers Home

1895. Information includes name of soldier, company or regiment, rank,
length of service, birth, age, where admitted from, occupation, married

Deb,
This Robert Alexander was born in 1845 and a son of Jetzel Curtis and Mary
Phillips Fitzgerald. He died in 1928, he and Annie had 11 kids.
I will continue to try to solve the "two" Catherines.
Thanks for your kind words.

Carol--
Looks like we are left with just more questions regarding the Demastus
lineage and which "Catherine" belonged to who and married who.
As for your extra little find of Annie Cora Snead (d/o James DeMasters/us
and Nancy Snead), I have nothing. I have no James Demasters/us that married
a Snead but this doesn't necessarily mean I don't have something. I have a
lot of ancestors with spouses that I only have first names or nicknames on.
I did note, however, that I do have a Robert Alexander Fitzgerald who might
possibly fit the bill.
I have a Robert Alexander Fitzgerald, s/o James Fitzgerald and Sallie Snead.
I have no birthdate but am guessing based on other available info that he
was probably born between 1825 and 1830. He married Lucy Ann Coffey, b.
1824, sometime around 1844. Lucy Ann was the d/o Reuben G. and Nancy Giles
Coffey. Both are buried in the Pleas Taylor Cemetery on Tye River in Nelson
County, VA. To my knowledge, there were two children: Alexander Robert b.
10/24/1852 and Susan Massie b. 12/18/1856. It is entirely possible that he
took Annie Cora Snead as his second wife in 1866.
The likelihood of Annie Cora Snead being the daughter of a James
Demasters/us sounds a little thin, based on her last name. It is more
likely she was his step-daughter, in which case one of our James Demastus
ancestors was married to a widow named Nancy Snead. Big question is was she
a Coffey, Campbell, Fitzgerald, Allen or just a mongrel? :-)
Keep me in mind if you run across anything. You've been a big help over the
years in my research on the Coffey family and I don't know what I'd do if
you stopped posting to the websites.
