I am searching for info about Albert Benjamin Coffey b.c1840s in Wayne co. KY,I think. Who was he? Did he have siblings there? Who did he marry? I have been told he was a twin. He had a son, Edward b.c 1867 Ky/Tx. I can't seem to follow these people any farther back. Can you help? Thank you. AudreyB.
My Cofey/Coffey/Coffie relatives were from
Cahirsiveen, Kerry, Ireland. They immigrated to the
Virgil Township and Pierce Township area of NW Chicago
around 1860. There were other brothers and sisters
that traveled to the United States at that time that
settled in other areas and were never heard from
again.
Cofey was a Pioneer
Thirteenth Stret REsident Lived in Pierce Township for
40 Years.
Sick Two Weeks
In the death of Jeremiah Cofey, who passed away at the
home of his son, Andrew J. Cofey, yesterday afternoon,
DeKalb county loses one of its, pioneer residents. Mr
Cofey came to this community in 1860, residing for a
short time in Kane county before taking up farming in
Pierce township about 40 years ago. Two weeks ago Mr
Cofey was taken sick and although he was nearing the
89th mile-stone of life, his unusual activity
preceding his illness lead the family to believe he
would quickly recover.
His illness, however took a serious form and although
everything possible was done to relieve the ailment,
his life quietly passed out late yesterday afternoon.
Mr. Cofey was born in Ireland in 1885 leaving his
native country for America when a young man. He came
to this vicinity in 1860, settling first in Kane
county, a few years later moving to a farm in Pierce
township where he spent nearly 40 years. Mrs Cofey
preceded her husband in death some 36 years ago. After
her death Mr Cofey remained on the farm with the
assistance of his sons, kept it in operation. Mr. and
Mrs. Andrew Cofey operated the place until seven years
ago when they moved to DeKalb and the father spent his
declining years in comfort at the home of his son.
He is survived by two sons, Andrew Cofey;, North
Thirteenth street at whose home he passed away and Sam
Cofey, residing on a farm near Maple Park, also two
daughters, Mrs. Charles O'Mally, living on a farm near
Maple Park, also two living on a farm near Maple Park,
and Miss Etta who has made her home with her brother
in this city. There is also a large circle of friends
who were sorrowed to hear of the pioneer's passing.
Funeral services are to be held tomorrow morning at
nine o'clock at St. Mary's church here while
internment will be in the Catholic cemetery at Maple
Park. (from a DeKalb paper)

In response to Tim's invitation to press on with Coffee research, I
admit that I have been mightily discouraged by what seems to be a very
large percentage of Coffey/Coffee/Coffy families from Appalachia who
talk to each other on this site. Many seem to be originally from
Ireland, but most have been around in the US far a while.
My Coffy connection is my great great grandmother, Maria Coffy, who
married William Burke and lived with him on their farm in the Townland
of Northbrook, Civil Parish of Aughrim, County Galway. I would like to
know who her parents were.
Maria Coffy Burke never left Ireland. She had four children, Catherine,
(my great grandmother, who came to New York City in 1867,) Mary, John,
and Anne. Maria Coffy Burke was born c. 1819, I am not sure where, and
died 28 Oct 1892 in Northbrook. She is buried in the Burke plot in the
ruins of Kilconnell Abbey.
There are Coffys/Coffeys in Cloghagalla Eighter, a Townland just south
of Northbrook about one quarter mile, which have descendants who connect
through Mary Burke (Deeley), the second daughter of William and Maria
Burke. Within such a small community, it was not unusual for family
lines to intersect at the third cousin level, as is the case here. Which
leads me to believe that Mary Coffy Burke is a daughter of one of the
Coffy men who lived on the Coffy farm at Cloghagalla Eighter. There are
no birth records that go back that far and I have tried for years to
find a marriage record of William and Maria, with no luck.
Interesting, however, is the listing in the Information wanted web site
of Boston University which contains a searchable data base of postings
in The Boston Pilot. I found an entry for Joseph Coffey, age 15, with a
cryptic note, "Fa= John Coffey," located after his arrival from Ireland
in Hamden, St. John's, New Brunswick, Canada. Joseph is said to be from
Civil Parish of Aughrim. It was his sister Bridget Coffey who was
looking for him. Date of the ad was 12-21-1850, just after the worst of
the famine. The Bridget's contact name was given as Isaac Parker, of
Roxbury MA.
I checked the 1850 census in Roxbury MA, done in April of 1850, and
could not find Bridget. I did find Isaac Parker in Roxbury, a man with
money, but no occupation, three grown daughters, and two Irish servants.
Bridget may not have arrived yet to possibly be a servant in that
household. I found the 1852 Roxbury city directory on line and found
Isaac Parker living on Walnut Avenue near Rockland Street. There was no
Bridget listed, but there were Brian Coffee, laborer at 54 Washington
Street and John Coffee, laborer on Davis St, near East. I located
Parker's home site on a contemporary map, but struck out on the two
Coffee men.
My thinking goes that I can chase this US Coffee rabbit down the next
big hole and have some fun doing it, but I may not be able to confirm
the parentage of my Maria Coffy Burke this way. If Joseph Coffee is
related, he is too young to be a brother, is more likely a nephew or
cousin. If a nephew, his father John may be a brother to Maria Coffy Burke.
Anybody having this kind of day?

Hello Listers, My Coffey connection is a man named Thomas Coffey who was
born in Cork and immigrated as a young man to Brooklyn New York in the 1860s.
While searching for him (with very little success) I came across a site that
might help others. It is on the Boston College website and is in their Irish
Studies program. It has a searchable database of newspaper ads asking for
help in locating family members. Good luck. Sue

Betty,
I have information (below) regarding the ancestors of Mary Elizabeth Coffey
which came from another Coffey descendant. I haven't attempted to verifty
the accuracy of this information so please accept it only as a guideline.
However, it will give you a place to start. Note this info shows her as the
daughter of Henry Bradford Coffey, and granddaughter of Rice Coffey.
