My deepest sympathy to you, pen and paper notes will help, write down what
you remember.. You came thru a heck of a hurricane and are a survivor. God
bless you in your recovery.

My grandfather was illegitimate son of Joel or Cole Coffey. Their sister
Mary Ann Coffey married Henry Sellars. in 1842 And 2 of their sons married Mary
Polly Holt Strunk's daughters Artimissy and Mahydah/Mahulda Strunk. Their
father was Jackson Strunk. Mary & Jackson Strunk had 6 children and were married
Whitley Co., KY Aug 1829. I have found no verification, however well known
in our Holt family that we should have been Coffey descendants.
God bless you, Cal. I can certainly understand your encouragement. Hang
on to those harddrives though. Everything may look a lot better to you a few
months or years down the line. Once the post-traumatic syndrome passes, you
will regain your enthusiasm for life, and hopefully for genealogical
research!

I'm happy to do it and only hope it will help someone. I found these notes
back in 2001 when I first began my genalogy research and my husband took me
to the Adair Co. Library. Since then, due to raising a very young
granddaughter, plus my failing health, we have not been able to travel any since that
year. I have been blessed by so many people who were generous to share their
information with me, that I was hoping to return the blessing in some small
way. Have a few more pages to post as soon as I have the time.

Thanks for the clarification, Bill. As I indicated the notes copied are
scattered and non-specific sometimes, and that is why I urge anyone with
verified information to add their posts for clarification. The notes are just
"jumping off points" for the list to look at and consider.
Thanks again,

Hi Bill,
Thanks so much for posting the Eli Coffey descendant list. I really
appreciate your work.
I have never heard of a book titled "The Coffey Clan". Can you tell me
anything about it?
I believe (and may be wrong) that the Nathaniel Jackson, son of Eli is
different from the Jackson Coffey living in the area with Franklin and the
other unknown Coffeys. In the 1850 census, they are two separate families.
The mystery Jackson Coffey is listed with his wife Sarah, and Eli's
Nathaniel Jackson is listed as "NJ" Coffey with his wife and family. It
says he is a preacher.
You are probably right about Franklin belonging to Eli and Mary. Long ago,
I corresponded with Marvin Coffey and he told me that Eli and Mary were his
best guess too. But ya know, it just doesn't ring true to me. There are
the naming conventions, the witnessing and other legal interplay that makes
me wonder about those unknown Caney Fork Coffey men, not to mention an
elderly woman named Hester who may have been married to a Joel Coffey and
been their mother.
One other thing I didn't mention was that the unknown Martin Coffey that
married Darius may have first married Mary McGuire on 5 October 1830 in
Russell Co KY, she a sister to Martha McGuire - wife of Franklin. This is
rampant speculation, which is why I didn't mention it earlier. If true, it
strengthens the ties between the Caney Coffey guys.
I am grateful for your response, and please, if there is anything I might
have that you want, don't hesitate to ask. Below, Franklin's descendants
through 2 generations. The way my database prints reports - hope its not
too confusing. Let me know if you have any questions, I have alot more
notes.
Carol.

Carol,
I checked my information and I have some information about Franklin Coffey
who married Martha "Patsy" McGuire. I did not have the names of their
children, but added them from what you posted. My information came from a
book titled "The Coffey Clan" and correspondence with other Coffey
researchers. According to what I have Franklin was the son of Eli Coffey
and grandson of Salathiel Coffey. I'm including below a report "Descendants
of Eli Coffey". I also have information on Nathaniel "Jackson" Coffey born
January 3, 1817 who may be the brother of Franklin. I'll gladly share what
I have.
Bill DeGarmo
Yes, it was Ida. Ida's parentage was somewhat confused for some time as I found an Ida Coffey listed in the census for 1880 as the daughter of Sidney Coffey, and the age was right so I think that she was living with Sidney's family. I became confused too after looking at her marriage and death records listed Shelby as her father. And in the Russell County birth records for that year [one of the few years before 1911 that there is a register for] Ida Coffey was listed twice first as a daughter of Sidney and Sarah and with the right date but looking closely I was also able to find entries for Ida and a brother whose name I could not read the same date. I have a photo of Shelby on my Coffey photos page - http://flanaganfamily.org/coffeypics.html - it is the second photo in the list. I think the first was a son of Shelby Coffey with the same name but am not sure. I heard the story as a child that my grandmother had an uncle Shelby and he was waylaid after a card game riding home!
. The story went that while he was on horseback, he parted his coat and said, "Well, you'll never kill a braver man." Mary Ann Hill was listed as Ida's mother in her marriage record, and I she does appear to have been married to John Coffey earlier. She applied for a Civil War pension on that basis, but by that time was named Parrigan and Parrigan is the name listed on the birth entries I found for Ida and her brother. Shelby was married first to Sarah Jane Williams, but she died relatively early - they had one daughter Mary Susan Coffey. He married Melissa Absher in 1900 on their way to Oklahoma, and they already had several children together. He was never married to Mary Ann Hill that I am aware of. I have some info on Shelby at http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=flan... - marriages/relationships are not listed in order, so be aware of that, and the term marriage needs to be interpreted loosely.
I've been in touch with a wonderful cousin in Texas, who is descended from Shelby and Melissa. I'll be happy to forward your email address to her if you like. She might have more info and she has been in touch with more branches of the family than I. :)

Hi Granuaile, and thanks for your reply.
Was your great-grandmother named Ida? I have an Ida and Addy, twins, listed as children of Shelby Coffey by Mary Ann Hill. I also have Mary Ann Hill married (20 Oct 1860) to a John A Coffey with a child named Hester or Hettie. There's that name again! Does this mesh with your records, and if so, do you know who this John A Coffey belongs to? I've always thought he might belong to Allen Coffey and Polina.
My great-great grandfather was another John A Coffey (1835-1919). He was the son of Franklin Coffey. He married Elizabeth Popplewell (1836-1906) on 25 Dec 1856 and they had 8 children: Albert, Mary, John Cleveland*, Laura Bell, Green, Margaret, Bryant and Sarah. Several members of this family are buried at the Square Oak Church Cemetery in Ono, Russell, KY. Martha McGuire Coffey (1815-1900), Franklin's wife, is also buried there.

Hi,
I have asked myself the same questions and do believe that these families are related... I have wondered if Hester was the mother of Jackson, from whom I descend through his son Shelby. My familiarity is limited but is with that line. My greatgrandmother was Shelby's out-of-wedlock daughter but along with her twin brother went by Coffey. Shelby and Willis both served in the 3rd Kentucky Infantry and the 1st Kentucky Cavalry USA during the Civil War.

Coffey Tree Shelbyville, Tenn. Nov. 15, 1844
Dear Jefferson,
I received your letter of the 16th Sept and have read it with
entertaining interest. Indeed, it is always a source of gratification to me to hear
that my friends are doing well.
You request some information respecting the history of our ancestors. I
have no written biography of the original Coffey family, and therefore can
only relate to you such facts as have come within my own recollection and such
as have reached me by tradition.
I remember to have seen my Paternal grandfather. His name was John
Coffey. He was raised in one of the lower counties of Virginia and died in
Albemarle. My grandmothers maiden name was Jane Graves and my Fathers name was
James Coffey. He also was raised in the lower part of Virginia and from there
removed to Essex and from there to Albemarle where your Father Ambrose was
born in the year 1762. From this County Father removed to Amherst and here his
children grew up to manhood. My Mother's maiden name was Elizabeth
Cleveland. My maternal grandfather's name was Alexander Cleveland. He was a
descendant of the English and was an own cousin of Oliver Cromwell a gentelman
(sic) that figures so conspicuously in the 16th Century. He was raised in
Virginia born in the year 1663 and died in 1775 at the age of 112.
My Father was born in 1729 and died in 1786, and his children were nine
sons and two daughters. My brothers names were John, Archelaus, James,
Reubin, Ambrose, Eli, Joel, and Lewis. They are all dead save Eli and Lewis the
first of whom resides in Missouri and the other in Ky. I became acquainted
with your Paternal Grandfather Jesse Moore about the close of the Revolutionary
War. He then lived in Burke Co. N. C. where you were born. He was born in
Virginia there he married your Grandmother whose maiden name was Johnson one
of the most respectable families in that time in Virginia. Many of whose
descendants now live in Kentucky. I am still living at the same place you last
saw me but cannot expect in the course of nature to remain much longer. I am
now in my 80th year.
May God Bless you

These are my transcriptions of a series of handwritten notes on one
legal-sized sheet, which I found in the COFFEY file in the Adair Co. Library. They
are transcribed just as written, errors and all. There is no indication who
wrote them. I have no further information.

Hi,
I have asked myself the same questions and do believe that these families are related...
