Lilly--
I say again--there are two Nancy Coffeys who married Campbells. These Nancy Coffeys were of different generations. The Nancy Coffey referenced in the Deed located in Book 8, page 52, Nelson Co, dated 5-12-1834, is not (I repeat NOT) the daughter of Edmund S. and Matilda Fitzgerald Coffey, Jr. She is Edmund S. Coffey, Jr.'s, younger sister. Edmund, Jr. was born in 1773 and Nancy was born in 1779. They were the children of Edmund Stewart and Nancy Barnett/Chenault Coffey, Sr. This Nancy Coffey married Francis Campbell born 1780 (s/o Francis and Isobell Catlett Campbell) in Amherst County on February 28, 1806. (My information comes from their marriage records and a review of the census for the time period in order to establish the names of their children.)
The Polly Campbell, Nancy Campbell, Elizabeth Campbell, Manerva Campbell, Malina Campbell, Francis J. Campbell, and Edmund J. Campbell were the children of Francis and Nancy Coffey Campbell. I have some of these but not all in my data base plus a few that are not mentioned here that I am still trying to verify and document. In comparing your info against mine, as regards their children, some of the info you sent is correct, some is not. Don't forget that they used the same names from generation to generation.
See my additional notations to your questions in capital letters and red below.

Subject: Francis Campbell, Deed 1834
I have been studying a Deed located in Book 8, page 52, Nelson Co, dated 5-12-1834.
The Deed involves 3 parties, and I will now identify them.
#1. Francis Campbell, who identifies himself as of Nelson Co. VA, this would then differentiate him from the other man named Francis Lee Campbell, who is of Louisa Co., VA.
Francis Campbell states he has recieved a portion of his father in law's estate, which must have passed to Nancy Coffey, the daughter of Edmund Stewart Coffey, Jr and Matilda Fitzgerald, who married 1-3-1798. I believe that Nancy Coffey was born about 1799, and is probably their first child.
Francis Campbell is selling 200 acres to his brother in law, Edmund F. Coffey and Powhattan Parrish, but that Francis and his wife will continue to live on the property for all their life. The sales price was $1.00.
#2. Edmund F. Coffey and Powhatan Parrish. I do NOT know these names, but I would venture to guess that Edmund is actually Edmund Fitzgerald Coffey, the son of Edmund Stewart Coffey, Jr and Matilda Fitzgerald.
Edmund F. Coffey would be the brother of Nancy Coffey, who is married to Francis Campbell, the maker of the Deed.
Powhatan Parrish is possibly the son of a daughter of Edmund S. Coffey, Jr.?
Powhatan Parrish married Nancy Campbell 3-26-1839 Nelson Co VA, she is the daughter of Francis Campbell and Nancy Coffey.
#3. Nancy Coffey, aka Mrs. Francis Campbell, and her children.
Nancy Coffey is born about 1799, she is the daughter of Edmund Stewart Coffey, Jr and Matilda Fitzgerald, who married 1-3-1798. I believe her brother is Edmund F. Coffey.
I believe that Nancy Coffey married Francis Campbell on 8-29-1817 Nelson Co VA, however the index of the actual courthouse record lists his name as JOEL Campbell. I think that if the actual record was to be examined, his true name might be revealed as Francis Joel Campbell.
His marriage record says Joel, but his Deed states Francis. I think this is a case of one particular man, using 2 names, interchangably.
The children of Nancy Coffey and Francis Campbell are, as evidenced by the Deed, as well as using marriages records to establish their identity.
A. Polly Campbell, m. 12-22-1834 Nelson Co, Henry COFFEY.
B. Nancy Campbell, m. 3-26-1839 Nelson Co, Powhattan PARRISH
C. Elizabeth Campbell, m. 12-31-1842 Nelson Co, James WRIGHT
D. Manerva Campbell, m. 8-23-1850 Nelson Co, Jesse SMITH
E. Malinda Campbell, m. 2-12-1838 Nelson Co, Lawrence C. BROWN
F. Francis J. Campbell, m. 10-1-1842 Nelson Co, Sarah A. GRAVES
G. Edmund J. Campbell, m. 1-17-1842 Nelson Co, Derniver COFFEY
********************************************************************************
Now for some questions and some comments:
#1. What proof exists that the man named Francis Lee Campbell, who lived his adult life in Louisa Co VA is in fact the son of Lawrence Campbell and Henrietta Catlett?
Archibald Campbell married a Mary LEE 11-29-1771 Northumberland Co VA. Could this possibly be the parents of Francis Lee Campbell, of Louisa Co, VA?
#2. I think the name above, listed as #F. Francis J. Campbell, s/o Nancy Coffey, is probably also Francis Joel Campbell.
#3. In the 1860 census, at Nelson Co, VA there are several names listed which are related to this family line:
Edmund S. Campbell, 60 yrs, (b. 1800), he is said to be the son of John Campbell and Mildred COFFEY. He married Elizabeth Susannah Phillips 3-24-1840 Nelson Co, Rice C. Coffey signed the bond. THIS WOULD BE CORRECT. HE WAS THE SON OF JOHN H. CAMPBELL, 1771 - 1885 AND MILDRED AMELIA/EMELIE COFFEY, 1772 - 1840. HE WAS ALSO MARRIED TO FANNY CARR.
F. J. Campbell, 38 yrs, (b. 1822), married Sarah A. Graves, I believe he is the son of Francis Campbell and Nancy Coffey. I HAVE HER AS SARAH ANN GROVE, MARRIED IN NELSON COUNTY ON OCT 1 1842. HER LAST NAME COULD VERY WELL HAVE BEEN GRAVES BUT WAS GIVEN TO ME BY A CAMPBELL RESEARCHER AS GROVE. THIS WOULD BE FRANCIS JEFFERSON CAMPBELL. HIS MOTHER, NANCY, WOULD HAVE BEEN THE D/O EDMUND STEWART AND NANCY BARNETT/CHENAULT COFFEY, SR.
Edmund J. Campbell, 36 yrs, (b. 1824), married Derniver COFFEY, I believe he is the son of Francis Campbell and Nancy Coffey. EDMUND JOSHUA WILLIAM CAMPBELL WAS THE SON OF FRANCIS AND NANCY COFFEY (D/O OF EDMUND STEWART AND NANCY BARNETT/CHENAULT COFFEY, SR.) CAMPBELL. HE WAS BORN AUG 10, 1822, DIED MAR 23, 1896. I HAVE NOT RECORDS OF A WIFE BY THE NAME OF DERNIVER COFFEY (NO ONE BY THAT NAME AT ALL IN COFFEY LINES). EDMUND JOSHUA WILLIAM CAMPBELL MARRIED MATILDA SAMANTHA COFFEY, BORN APR 7, 1829, DIED DEC 6, 1901 IN NELSON COUNTY ON JAN 17, 1842.
Nancy Campbell, 61 yrs, (b. 1799), she is the widow of Francis Campbell. I believe her to be Nancy Coffey, d/o Edmund Stewart Coffey, Jr. YES, SHE WAS THE D/O OF EDMUND STEWART AND MATILDA FITZGERALD COFFEY, JR. HOWEVER SHE WAS NOT MARRIED TO FRANCIS CAMPBELL, B. 1780; SHE WAS MARRIED TO HIS BROTHER JOEL CAMPBELL, B. 1790.
#4. Please refer to the Will of Francis Campbell, Will Book C, Nelson Co, dated 1823. The witness of the Will is Edmund F. COFFEY, and John COFFEY.
In that Will his wife is named as Isabell, and is thought to be Isabell Catlett.
In that Will his children are named as:
A. Francis Campbell
B. Mary Campbell, aka Polly, married to J. Gregory
C. Joel Campbell
D. Rachel Campbell, married John Gregory.
I am confused as to which of the 2 brothers above, Francis or Joel, is the Francis Campbell who married Nancy Coffey in 1817. Can someone help me on this point to define the 2 brothers. JOEL.
#5. I believe that I have identified the Francis Campbell, of the Deed dated 1834, as the son of Francis Campbell and Isabell, as named in the Will of 1823 for Francis Campbell.
Please send me back your comments, corrections and additions.
Best regards,
Lilly Martin
