Hello all,
Just wanted to let you know that there is another descendant of Jesse
and Sarah McMahan Boone on the list. I'm descended from their
youngest daughter Rachel who married Marvel Coffey. I have a copy of
Jesse's will which establishes Rachel as his daughter to my
satisfaction. I do have a problem with Marvel Coffey's parentage
though. Some think he is Marvel Asbury Coffey, but I believe that
the later is a nephew or cousin of the senior Marvel. I have copies
of several legal documents for Marvel Coffey and in none of them does
he use the middle name of Asbury. Any help with Marvel's ancestors
would be appreciated.

Carolyn,
Thanks for letting me know the book "A History of Watauga County, North
Carolina" stated the parents of Hannah and Anna incorrectly. I rechecked
and I had a typo I also have 1756 for the death of Israel. The Coffey's
have presented me with quite a challenge, as has the Boone's.
My Coffey lineage has not been proven. My GG grandmother was Lavina Coffey
born about 1805 who married Simeon Coombs on July 22, 1823 in Adair County,
Kentucky at the home of her father Joel Coffey. Lavina died about 1865 in
Bourbon County, Kansas. My dilemma is this I can't be certain which Joel
Coffey was Lavina's father. I believe Lavina's father was Joel Coffey born
about 1774 who was living in Adair County, KY at the time Simeon and Lavina
were married. If he is the correct Joel then his father was Nebuzaraden
Coffey born about 1757 who married Elizabeth Hayes, and Nebuzaraden's father
were Chesley and Jane (Cleveland) Coffey. By the way a Nebuzaraden Coffey
signed some sort of consent for the wedding of Lavina. This is
circumstanial evidence, but it seems compelling.

Bill~
Tom was quoting from the book "A History of Watauga County, North Carolina"
by John Preston Arthur. I have the book and Tom quoted it correctly, however
the information in the book is incorrect. My records agree with what you
have stated EXCEPT that Israel Boone died in 1756 and not in 1751 according
to Sharon Hernes Silverman in the book "The Daniel Boone Homestead".
According to this book, Sarah Morgan Boone went with Israel to a Monravian
Colony in August 1755 seeking treatment for consumption (TB). He was
hospitalized for several weeks and discharged with "small hope for recovery"
and died on June 25, 1756, his wife having died from the same disease prior
to August 1755. Anna and Hanna were the daughters of Jesse Boone and Sarah
McMahan and did not have a brother named Jesse.
Both of my maternal grandparents were Coffey's. On this line, I descend from
Smith Coffey and Hannah Boone to Squire Coffey and Ella Webb to Smith Coffey
and Elizabeth Redman to Charles Coffey and Sophronia Phipps to Vance Coffey
and Jennie Coffey.
What is you Coffey lineage?
Happy Holidays~

Tim,
In my previous e-mail I mentioned Anna and Hannah Boone were the daughters
of Jesse Coffey. I meant to say they were the daughters of Jesse Boone.
Forgive me for having a senior moment.

Tim,
I read your e-mail regarding "Extracts from History of Aatauga, North
Carolina" with
interest since my Coffey line was mentioned. My information does not track
with what you mentioned. The Anna Boone who married William Coffey was born
July 26, 1785 and Hannah Boone who married Smith Coffey was born ABT 1783.
Based on their birthdates they couldn't have been daughters of Israel Boone
who died July 26, 1751. I have both Anna and Hannah as daughters of Jesse
Coffey who was a son of Israel Boone. Do the above birthdates track with
what you have. The only thing I can think of is there may have been a Jesse
Boone who was a brother of Anna and Hannah, but I hardly see how Anna and
Hannah could be the children of Israel. Is there something I'm missing.

Anna Boone married William Coffey. Tradition says she was married in a
log house which formerly stood on the site of the present residence of
Joseph Hardin, a mile or more east of Boone, North Carolina.
Jesse Boone received a grant of 100 acres November 29, 1817, cornering on
Jesse Coffey's land. --- Ashe County Deed Book F, p. 170.
Anna Boone, wife of William Coffey, and Jesse Boone's sister, talked with
Mr. J. W. Farthing in 1871 when he was building a house for her grandson,
Patrick Coffey, in Caldwell County.
Hannah Boone, another sister of Jesse, married Smith Coffey, grandfather
of present Smith Coffey of Kelsey post office.

Jesse, Anna, and Hannah Boone were children of Israel Boone, brother of
Daniel Boone.

Jonathan Boone was ordained elder in Baptist Church February, 1816, by
Reuben Coffey and Elijah Chambers.

Three Forks Association -- Yadkin Baptist Association.
In 1790, Three Forks Church, the first in Watauga, was constituted.
The churches in Watauga first joined the Strawberry Association in
Virginia, but in 1790 withdrew and formed the Yadkin Association. The
first members of this body were George McNeil, John Cleveland Coffey,
Andrew Bader, John Stone, etc.

Thomas J. and William C. Coffey carried on a business at what is now
Butler, Tennessee, but on left bank of Roane Creek before the Civil War.
After the war began, they had to leave on account of their Southern
principles. Later they returned to their old home in Caldwell County.

That's all until after the holiday. Best wishes to you folks for a happy
holiday season.
