I'm also a descendant of Marvel and Rachel Boone Coffey. I have
copies of several documents that lead me to believe that Rachel Boone
was the daughter of Jesse and Sarah McMahan Boone. The most
convincing evidence if Jesse Boone's will that names Marvel Coffey
implying that Marvel is his son-in-law. Jesse Boone was the son of
Israel Boone. Israel's wife's name is unknown, but it is a known
fact that Israel was expelled from the Quakers because he married
someone who was not of Quaker faith. Also, Squire Boone, his father,
performed the ceremony and he was eventually expelled also. At that
point the Boones moved to NC. Israel and his wife both died young
and Jesse was raised by his uncle, Daniel, in KY.
As Ginny stated, to my knowledge no one has proven who Marvel
Coffey's parents were. I do not believe, however, that his name was
Marvel Asberry Coffey. Of all the documents I have seen, his name
was always given as Marvel Coffey. I believe that Marvel Asberry
Coffey is a relative who ended up in Kansas. Anyone have any ideas
on this?

Thanks to those of you to reinforced my thoughts on not copying anything that
belongs to someone else. This book (The Coffey Clan from 1690) was written
and thoroughly researched by Mr. Moore. He filled the pages with footnotes,
so he also gave credit to other researchers. His introductory message at the
beginning of the book speaks of his desire to keep his work alive and of use
to his "cousins". I hope someone can locate him or his family and find a way
to get copies of his treasure trove of information out to those who can use
it. I had no idea how rare this book is, and had mentioned it here to give
a heads up to other Coffey researchers about looking for it at a library.
I'll make a note on this board if I find a source for the book, but as of now
I have not. Sue
My line includes a Rachel BOONE who married Marvel COFFEY ca 1813 and moved
to Missouri. I have sources citing several different sets of parents for
each of these two, so can't tell you who either descends from.

Dear Coffee Cousins,
I know everyone seems to be excited about the booklet that
Sue has in her possession and many of you would like a copy.
Until a source can be found or a family member located to
gain permission to reprint this book is still under
copyright
protection.
At first I thought that Mr. Moore had simply reprinted the
book that had a 1690 publishing date but as the discussion
has continued it appears the Mr. Moore is the author and
printed the book in 1969.
A statement of copyright does NOT have to made nor does
it have to be "officially" registered to be protected. For
example
every email message you send is YOUR copyright protected
material.
It would not be legal to reproduce this book in ANY form.
However, it would be legal to create an every name index
including birth, death information, a separate marriage
index and which page to look for them.
Yours Aye
Cal

Wow, what a response. This book has been on our shelves for years. My
mother's father was a Coffey. He arrived in Brooklyn New York from County
Cork in the 1860s and died twenty years later leaving one son and no family
information. We came across this book (no one remembers how!) years ago,
and kept it hoping to connect at some point. It is a softcover of over 142
pages of typewritten information and photographs. I have done a search this
morning, hoping to find a source to buy it. (google.com) The Coffey
Clearinghouse website lists the book as a source of an article. Emailing
them might help locate one of the author's (Mr. Moore's) family. Local
libraries, particularly in Kansas (some of the book details Coffeyville
Kansas) and California (Mr. Moore's resident state) and Oklahoma (Osage
Indian Agency is mentioned) might have copies.
I don't have a scanner. I would like to locate the family of Mr.
Moore and see if they have copies available. Here is the address of the
coffey clearinghouse.

July pulling excerpts out can be confusing. Of two Coffey brothers
"came to America and raised eleven sons each". Mr. Moore has endeavored to
bring various accounts by various family members together and document which
are accurate and which are anecdotal. A huge task! I will type here a few
reference points for information that may interest some of you. In the
meantime, maybe one of us can find a source for this book.
This is from page 5 and is Mr. Moore commenting on two sources he used:
"Dr. Laurence H. Coffey of Lenoir, North Carolina wrote a
booklet--COFFEY Family Early History, and the information agrees with that
given in John L. Coffey's photostat...
'According to the best information available, the father of John
Coffey--originally went from Ireland to Liverpool then to Essex County,
Virginia, about the year 1690.'"
On the next page he credits Dr. Coffey's booklet for the names of the
children of the 'first' Coffey--John, Elizabeth, Patsy, Anister and Edward,
which agrees with John L. Coffey's photostat."
Later on page 5 he continues with data from county records of Virginia
with these references:
Deed Book dated July 15, 1745 John and Jane Coffey of Spotsylvania
County Virginia sold 100 acres (no book # or page given)
Deed book 24 page 130 dated June l5 1747 John Coffey and wife Jane
Coffey of Spotsylvania County Virginia sold about 100 acres
and this entry, "As John Coffey made his will on March 21st, 1774, and
his executors were qualified in Albermarle County court March 1775, he
evidentially died in January or February 1775."
Mr. Moore gives John L. Coffey and Dr. L. H. Coffey credit for both
stating that the above John Coffey and wife Jane Graves Coffey had 8
children--James, Edward, Thomas, Reuben, Benjamin, William, Elizabeth, and
Winnefred.
Also (page 9) Mr. Moore writes of Reuben Coffey and Reuben's service
in the Rev War. He volunteered under "Capt. Guest in Wilkes County, ....and
was in service twelve months...discharged in the fall of 1781" This Reuben
is "son of 'first'James Coffey". On August 28 1832 Reuben filed a petition
for pension in Wayne County Kentucky.
I hope some of this helps. Sue
I was also thinking it might be easier to get a scanned copy than by snail
mail. If you do find a way to scan the material, I would like to receive a
copy of the Coffey Booklet. Thanks for sharing this information.

I went to a Fitzgerald reunion there last weekend, and there are still many
Coffeys in the area, but I never seem to see them post on this site.

Sue,
I would also like to see what it says about the Coffey family, as my Fitzgerald line from Nelson County, VA is deeply intertwined with this clan. I went to a Fitzgerald reunion there last weekend, and there are still many Coffeys in the area, but I never seem to see them post on this site.
I have a "MyFamily.com" website I've recently begun, and if there is a way to get those pages scanned, or transcribed, I'd gladly post them on the site for folks to use as a reference tool.
Where did you find this treasure?

Hello, Recently I found a booklet called The Coffey Clan from 1690 by Frank
R. Moore. It appears to have been printed in 1969. I can't find a publisher
on the title page so I think it might have been a private printing. I don't

make that two , would be glad to pay for this.
What a find you have in the COFFEY Clan from 1690 booklet! You stopped the
info just as I was getting interested! Can you continue on with the 11
children of James and Elizabeth Cleveland, including dates and places if
available? What would you charge to photocopy all the pages of the booklet
and snail-mail it to me? I would be happy to pay you for your time and
expenses. Please let me hear from you. Thanks. Martha
Hello Coffey searchers,
I am looking for MARTHA SUSAN COFFEY, I do not have any info on her
family.
I do know she married Robert Perry Tarpley in MS. Had 2 children by
him, both born in MS. She was born about 1859 in Mississippi. Need to know
who her parents were. Maybe someone can find her in MS. census from
1860-1870. I know there were COFFEY'S in MONTGOMERY CO. in 1880 but she was a
TARPLEY BY THEN. Appreciate any information.
