Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Dear Coffey Cousins,
To search the Coffey-L archives go to:
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/coffey
You get a menu by month and year to choose from.
When you make your selction you will get a threaded
listing of all the messages for the month and year.
Another way is to use the list search
http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl
In the query box put coffey without the -L
You will get another search box for your criteria
and a choice of years to search.
If I search on my email address I will find all the messages
I posted to the Coffey-L that year.
Now that I know when I posted messages I can look in the
threaded archives for responses I might have missed.

Dear Coffey Cousins,
I tried an interesting search in my favorite search engine
http://www.google.com
I entered coffey rootsweb
Google returned about 15,000 hits
The first thing that popped up was the Coffey Cousins Convention
being held later this month and the Coffey Cousins website
What was really interesting to me is that it searched the mailing list
archives. Coffey is mentioned on many mailing lists at Rootsweb.
It also caught a website that mentioned Coffey and Rootsweb
that was NOT at Rootsweb.
I found pictures of 3 Coffey tombstones at:
Mattawa Pinehill Cemetary in Northeastern Ontario Canada
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~murrayp/mattawa/pinehill/page000
1.htm
I found these with the Google image search engine
When I increased the number of hits shown per page from 10 to 100 it
only showed 261 of the 15,000.
Another thing Google showed was a database of 600,000 pages of newspapers
from 1850 to yesterday.
http://www.newspaperarchive.com/
If you look just under the Google logo you will see 4 tabs.
Web Images Groups Directory
Google searches all 4 tabs at the same time.
The image search needs a LOT of improvement but I know they are
working on that.
The Groups search looks for entries in the usenet newsgroups
This serach found 187 hits for the coffey rootsweb criteria. It dropped
to 100 for just Coffey.
Therre seems to be quite a bit on a hockey player Paul Coffey in the
sports newsgroups.
TIP: I always use the advanced search because I can selct how many
hits are displayed form the default 10 up to 100 and I always chose 100
and if they had a higher number I would use that.
What you are looking for most of the time will be within the first
hundred hits.
Why click through ten pages when you can have it all on one? Just keep on
scrolling.
Try this with one of your other surnames and see what happens..

Hi List,
This Wm. Coffey might have been an Irvin / Ervin at birth. He was born in
1853 , Magoffin co.,Ky. Brother named Wilber. The natural parents died when
these boys were very young , and they were raised by the Coffey family. Does
anyone know of an orphanage from that time period ? If you know of an Irvin
/ Ervin , Coffey connection....would like to hear from you.
Janet
Hi=saw your message about Coffey's and I am one but thought it interesting
that your name is hare--I am researching the Harry family--any one in yours
with that spelling? I would appreciate knowing since I have had a lot of
trouble hunting my Harry's. Thanks you=so far my Coffey's don't match yours
that I can tell but I keep hoping for more on them also.

Hi Carole,
Is this the Carole I used to be in touch with?
I hope so.

My Grandmother is a direct descendant of the (former) Head of the Clan, and
I will be in Ireland, but a tad after the Clan gathering this summer. But
as far as the Coffies are concerned, I can not pinpoint their origins in
Ireland. I do not even know if they came from Kerry. About the furthest
back I can take them is Boston circa 1840.
Good luck with your own "family gatherings".

Hi Barbara,
My Coffey's are from Limerick. The brother or cousin of my ancestor is buried
in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Mason Co., KY and the tombstone says
he was born in Limerick. His wife, Ann Coshan, is buried there also and
she is from O'Clare. Did any of your Coffeys live in KY? As far as I
can figure out, my Coffey's came to American during the famine. I believe
there was a Thomas, b. 1815, Michael b. 1820, and John, b. 1826.

Hi! Our particular branch of Coffey's came from Limerick. I have looked at
the Griffith's Tax Evaluation for Limerick and there were several families of
Coffeys there and some of them were involved in Law enforcement. (not a great
time to be a cop). Frankly that is as far as I have been able to go with it.
According to what I have read Coffey's are not commonly from Limmerick but
one of the other counties. Our James William Coffey settled in Eddington, ME
and to the best of my knowledge did not go back to IRE. I have no knowledge
of any siblings. His parents were Patrick Coffey and Kate McCarty (from
death certificate). JW born June 23, 1834 (calculated from death
certificate.) His oldest child named Kate Ellen Coffey Born 1861 in Maine
married Joseph O'Hara Jul 1900 and may have moved to NY but I haven't traced
them. Unforturnately the homestead in Maine burned and any records/pictures
burned with it. The only remaining member of our branch that may have know
them is about 99. Still clearheaded but never new that side of family very
well because her father was youngest of JW's children and the others had left
home before she was old enough to know them. I verified his origin of
Limerick with his naturilzation papers at the National Achives in Waltham MA.
I also found useful tidbits in the census's such as how long they were in
this country.
Please stay in touch as It appears that most of the people doing research on
the Coffeys are Southern American branchs.

Hi:
I saw your posting regarding the COFFEY family in Ireland. My grandmother was Ellen COFFEY, b. 1863, Ireland, dau. of Bridget WELSH/WALSH and Martin COFFEY. Ellen emigrated to NYC sometime in the 1880's. There was a brother, JAMES COFFEY, who came to the USA and after a time, went back home to Ireland.
I have not been able to find out which County that Ellen came from, do you know which Counties the COFFEY families lived in ?
My FAGAN, BACON, KIERNAN & HALTON families were from Co. Westmeath.
I would like to hear from you regarding your COFFEY family.
Best regards,
Betty Lou Garcia - NJ

Do you know where your Coffie and Mcgillicuddy families came from in
Ireland?. I have Coffey's and Mcgillicuddys way back 1800 or so they would
have been in Kerry in the Mcgillicuddy reeks area. Are you familar with that
area? Then I have Coffey more recently late 1800's they were either from
Clare or Galway (they border each other). The Kerry Coffey's and the Galway
Coffeys seem to be two different lines. The McGillicuddy's may be having a
reunion in Kerry this summer. Well that is about all the information that I
have. Best Wishes, Ann

Hello list,
I am researching William Coffey , born in Magoffin co. ,Ky. about 1853. He
also had a brother named Wilbur. These boys parents died when they were
very young, they were raised by the Coffey family. It is unknown if there was
a family tie.
Does anyone know how I can find orphan records from that era or does anyone
have any ideas that might help in my search ? Thanks.
Janet
