Dear Tim: We genealogists are, by necessity, a patient bunch! You just take
care of yourself and we will gladly wait for your return to good health for
the information on the COFFEY surname. I pray for your quick and total
recovery. God bless you. Martha
Hi Tim:
So sorry to hear about your illness. It was so nice of you to worry about the "Coffey" researchers.
Please don't worry about the people on the Coffey list. What is important, is, that you take care of yourself and that you get better.
Best wishes,
Betty Lou Garcia

Subject: [COFFEY] New developments of a different sort
Folks,
I started a list discussion regarding if folks would like to see updates on
the COFFEY surname
and then haven't responded to your replies. Here's why:
This is a note to inform you that I'll be out of touch for at least a
couple of days if not more.
My wife took me to the doctor yesterday after a round of cookie tossing and
difficulty swallowing.
He said it was some sort of something I've never heard of, much less trying
to pronounce. He said
my neck glands were the most swollen he'd seen. He said it was not strep
throat but some other something.
I've been given some sort of drug to take care of that, plus asked to push
fluids and rest. So this
is written as a 'let you know my status' while I'm up for fluids.
Last night my left eye closed and after getting it open 2 or 3 times only
to have it close again
in 15-20 minutes I gave up and went to bed. This morning it looks awful
but I'm waiting
to get the doctor before trying to re-open it.
I have the sneaking suspicion my right eye is about to do the same. While
I care deeply for
the Project, I care for my health more.

And, when you do recover and are back to your old self, I would love to be on your list. I am very new to this. My maiden name is Coffey and I'm from West Virginia. Harry Coffey was my grandfather. I know very little.

Nancy: I acquired my information about Edward and Anne COFFEY from the
website: The Coffey Family, Descendants of Edward COFFEY,
at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~schayes/coffey.htm
I have not verified that information with any first-hand research of my own.
At the same time I have not run across any conflicting information either.
Your statement that the information you have lists them as Edmund S. COFFEY
and Ann Esther (Annister) POWELL, c/o Thomas Ap POWELL, basically confirms my
information with the exception of the Edward/Edmund disparity. May I ask
where you got your information, whether you have verified it, and if you have
any additional details regarding these two common ancestors? Let me hear
from you after you look at the above listed URL site. Thanks for contacting
me, "cousin". Martha
Dear Coffey Cousins,
Genealogy has been my hobby for about 15 years now.
I have watched the advent of the Internet into this arena
and have an observation...or two. :)
For simplicity I will divide genealogists into two catagories.
1. Began before the Internet
2. Began after the Internet
This message is primarily aimed at group 2 but group 1
should find it interesting.
The advent of the Internet becoming a tool in genealogy
is of course a tremendous boon to all researchers. BUT
I firmly believe that with all the information that is available
and becomes available each day is just a wet spot on the
bottom of the bucket.
There is SO much information NOT on the Internet, and it
is growing too, that I doubt if it will reach a point that it is
all on the internet.
Doing genealogy on the Internet can save us time and money
simply because we may not have to make a journey to go
rumaging through dark and dusty corners of a court house
in some far away state. I live in CA and my ancestors lived
back East. I can't afford to go 3000 miles on genealogical
expedition. The Internet helps.
However, there just isn't any info on my COFFEY line on
the Internet. Nada, zip, zilch. It also appears that is true for
many of you on this list.
If you are in group 1 this is not a big problem as most of you
know what to do.
If you are in group 2 there is an over dependance on the Internet
to provide the information you are looking for. Hoping that someone
else has done the work.
We sit at our computers sending out the same query time after time
waiting...waiting for that one response that will make the connection
when what we really need to do is what genealogists have always
done in the past and that is go look for it ourselves.
Even if you do find information on the Internet you do not know
if it is accurate. You still have to PROVE it is valid.
We can use the Internet to find the places that might have the
information we seek. Use search engines. I like www.google.com
I can do a general search on:
funeral homes
cemeteries
newspapers
mortality schedules
Add a city & state or county and state to narrow the serach.
When I need an address for a county courthouse I use the Handybook
for Genealogists. It also has phone numbers and websites.
Do you know the date of birth? Try to get the birth certificate.
Do you know the date of death? Try to get the death certificate.
Try to find the obituary. Try to find the funeral home or cemetery
records.
Funeral home records are not destroyed when they go out of business.
They are passed on to whatever funeral home takes over providing
services. A funeral home may just change names but still has records
from way back when.
Need a newspaper? Check PERSI [PERiodical Source Index] at
your local library. It is online but not free.
Locate your nearest Family History Center and pay them a visit.
They have tons of info on microfiche and film. You can rent
census films for under $5. Well, any film can be rented.
Most of them are staffed with knowledgable volunteers.
The one thing that will help most with your research on or off line
is writing an effective query. A poorly written query will get very
little results. An online query that does not have a good subject
line will not even get read especially if someone is browsing
through the list archives
I receive the digest version of the list. When use my reply button
COFFEY-D Digest V02 #87
goes into the subject line. Now if I type in my query without changing
the subject line who is going to read it? Very few. Here's an example of
a good query subject line:
Query: Nathaniel Seldon COFFEY, abt 1850, Ringoes, NJ
OK, This has gotten a little off track so I'll get off my soap box.
Yours Aye,
Cal

Good Afternoon List:
I am researching any Coffey associated with Caswell Coffey b c 1806 NC, probable son of Bennett/Bennit Coffey. Caswell has been credited with these children born before 1850:
William c 1831, Joel c 1838, Sarah c 1840, Rebecca c 1842, Orenna c 1843, and Thomas Nelson Coffey, 1849. There were additional children born in the 1850's, but at this time I do not require their information.
My goal is to locate between one and three wives of Caswell who would or could have been the mother(s) of the above children.
Names could have been Nancy Jane, Eliza Jane, Elizabeth Jane. Maiden names? One is said to have been a Jordan.
Areas involved would be Grainger Co., Hawkins Co., Claiborne Co., Hancock Co., TN.
Thanks to all in advance!

Of course, Tim, we ALL would! Please post all of your information to this
list so that each of us can glean what it pertinent to our own lines. Thank
you for offering to share! Martha
Hi Rooters!
You can count me in too. My Coffey family came out of Stokes Co., North
Carolina. My 3rd great-grandfather LEWIS MOSES COFFEY born about 1798 and
married DELILAH TURPIN IN 1818 Pulaski Co., KY and migrated to Martinsville,
Morgan Co., Indiana. Their children were: NANCY born 1819, JAMES WILSON ( my
g-g- grandfather) born 1822, POLLY ANN born 1824, ELIZABETH born 1826, JOHN
LEWIS born 1828, MOSES TURPIN born 1831, PHILLIP B. born 1834, DELILAH born
1836, ELIZABETH born 1839, ROBERT WASHINGTON born 1841 and LEWIS MOSES born
1845.
Who were LEWIS MOSES COFFEY'S parents and siblings? Can anyone relate to
this family and have them in their roots?
Dottie Crawford
Hi Tim:
I would be most interested in receiving any information on the Coffey surname. My Coffey families came from Ireland, one family settled in New York/New Jersey, the other family ended up in Westport/Norwalk, Ct.
Many thanks to you for taking the time to be the list administrator, it is greatly appreciated by all.
Best regards,
Betty Lou Garcia

I certainly would be interested--still have brick walls in my Coffee-Coffey
family research!!
Will be looking forward to seeing some! My Coffey ancestors go back through
Nebuzaraden Coffey.
Thanks
Grace
Yes, that kind of information seems to stimulate activity on the lists.

Good Evening Listers:
I am needing to find any one on this list who may be a descendent of Thomas Nelson Coffey 1849-1917 and his second known wife, Jane Hodges. I do not have a birth or death date for Jane, but she and Nels Coffey married January 1894, probably in Grainger Co., TN for that is where Nels was born, lived, and died. Nels is buried in the Rucker Cemetery in Thorn Hill.
Nels and Jane had the following children:
Myrtle, Joe, Maude, and Claude Coffey. I do not have their dates. To the best of my knowledge these kids remained in or near Grainger Co., Hamblen Co., Knox Co., and maybe even into Hamilton Co., TN.
Thomas Nelson Coffey is my 2nd ggf. Prior to his marriage to Jane Hodges he was married to Cornelia 'Neely' Coffey, daughter of Ausburn Coffey and Matilda Dalton. Neely's dates are 1848-1892. Again all probably occured in Grainger Co. TN. Neely is also buried in the Rucker Cemetery along with a daughter of her and Nels. The three of them share one headstone. I do not know what happened to Jane Hodges, nor do I know about her ancestors.
The children of Thomas Nelson Coffey and Cornelia Coffey were:
Eliza Jane, Thomas Jefferson (my ggf), James Madison, Mack Henry, Addison, Matilda, Isabella, and Lemmie.
I have limited information on the children of Nels and Neely and would welcome any additions and will share what I have. It is the information on the children of Nels and Jane that I need.
While growing up I always heard of Maude and Claude, very little on Joe. I have a handmade "kitchen witch" that Myrtle made for my grandmother, Mazella Coffey.
Thanks for any help and suggestions!
