My Nancy Coffey was John and Mary Strange's daughter. I see you have Mary
only. I,m not sure where I got the last name Strange, will have to do some
looking, when I first started genealogy I wasn't real good at keeping tracks
on where info came from. My Nancy married Thomas Pendley, they lived in
Wilkes County,NC and Forsyth,Ga one of their son's was William Burton
Pendley my 2nd great grandfather. Nice to meet a new cousin.
Sincerely,
Diana Mach

Hello fellow Coffey researchers.
A friend recently called my attention to a book which may be of interest to
Coffey researchers:
Rebels in Blue, The Story of Keith and Malinda Blalock
by Peter F. Stevens
It is in my local library, so is probably in yours.
Keith and Malinda Blalock were said to be the only husband and wife known
to have fought for both the Confederacy and the Union during the Civil War.
Apparently, the mountains of NC were a hot bed of both Confederate and
Union sympathies, with neighbors often pitted against neighbors, and even
brothers against brothers. The Blalocks lived near Grandfather Mountain
and Coffey's Gap around Watauga, Caldwell, Buncombe, and Mitchell Counties
in the Blue Ridge Mountains of NC. They first fought side-by-side for the
Confederacy, with Malinda disguised as a younger brother of Keith's. Keith
was always a unionist and soon Malinda was too, and they began work as
Union spies and renegades.
Families mentioned in the book are Blalocks, Pritchards, Coffeys, Carrolls,
Moores, and Boyds.
Coffeys specifically mentioned are Austin (Keith's stepfather), Enoch, J.
Filmore, Joe, John, Jones, Levi, Martha, Mary McKesson Blalock Coffey
(Keith's mother), McCaleb, Millie, Murray, Nievah, Polly, Reuben, Samuel,
Thomas, and William.
Levi Coffey is said to have been a unionist comrade of the Blalocks and a
distant relative of Austin. I think this Levi Coffey MIGHT be an ancestor
of my husband's. My husband's gggrandfather was Levi Coffey, born 1817 in
Burke Co NC, married Louisa Turnbull in 1849 in Cherokee Co NC.

I am looking for connections with others in regards to the daughter of David
Pleasant Coffey, she was Margaret Coffey, b. 1840 in TN; d. unknown.
Margaret wed (in White County, AR) Alex. Valentine, b. 1832; d. 1864, they
had three children. Margaret then wed S. A. Norman in White County, AR. I
can't find further information on her, any takers?

Joan,
I have just done a large research/ compilation project which included the
Coffey's of Oklahoma. I will look up information for you if you want. Let
me know the particulars.
