I am looking for information on relations to a Michael L. Coffey. I was hoping
that someone on the list might be tied in - in some fashion or another.
Michael Coffey was born in Kildare, Ireland in 1833. He came to US in 1847
with his parents and siblings. All died of Typhoid during the crossing except
he and a sister Mary (don't have any idea what became of her).
He became a railroad contractor and helped construct the old North Missouri
rr, Kansas City and Southern rr, and sections of the SantaFe.
He married an Ann Fitzsimons in St.Louis in 1857. They had 8 children - Mary
Elizebeth, James T., Luke, Ann, Francis, John, Michael J., and Ellen C. The
Children were born in Cooper Co., Jackson Co., Morgan Co. and St. Louis. The
1870 census shows them living in Douglas Co. (Eurdora Twnp.) Kansas.
Michael Coffey died in St.Louis in 1900.
Thanks for your assistance.

I have done extensive research on my Pendley's and find many different
spellings of the name. I have discovered that Most Pendley's regardless
of the spelling are one large family. Unlike the Fields there are
several spellings and I have found that they are mostly of separate
ties. Although I do find, De La Feld, Field, and Fields do share some
connections. I am sure if we could dig deep enough we would find a
relationship one to another. Unfortunately during the civil war many
records were destroyed and that alone may prevent us from locating the
elusive ties.. I am most positive that my Pendley's and the Kentucky
Pendley's are connected. Jonathan Pendley and Thomas Pendley traveled
together all through time. But I can not make a positive tie, because
records have been destroyed. So from Thomas Pendley to present we sit in
limbo, with Thomas as the first Pickens County Pendley. Many Pendley
were in Pickens county all arriving about the same time.. Jonathan
Pendley Sr. can be traced as far back as England, Va, NC, He was
Jonathan Pendley Jr's Father.. By the preponderance of the evidence I
believe Jonathan to be Thomas Pendley's Father
My line includes Coffey, Fields, Mealer, Seay, and Cowart as dominating
roots.
My Seay line goes back to James Seay Jr. born 1719 ( I am sure there was
a Sr. but I have no record) Married to Lucy Lewis in Amelia County
Virginia.
My Seay's settled in Texas.
My Coffey Line starts with Nancy Coffey Married Thomas Pendley.
My Fields line goes back to England Thomas Fields and Susannah Humphrey
Fields, In Pickens County Ga.
Any one with any help on any of these line, I would certainly
appreciate it.
Thanks
Sammy Pendley
I'm interested in finding the siblings and parents of Zelda Coffey. All
I know about her so far is that she married Gabriel Smith either in VA,
NC, or KY before 1817. She died abt 1826 in Grayson co., KY. Any bells
ringing? ***julie***
Hi, I am looking for a Jane Coffee/Coffey living in KY in 1877. She was
married to William Frank Mitchell, and they had several children, two sons,
one of which is my ancestor, Wm. Franklin (Billy) Mitchell, and his brother,
Charles Edward (Ed). They bothe were born in the Paducah, KY area and then
moved to Faulkner County, AR where they married, lived, died and are buried.
I don't have anything whatsoever on (Jane) could have been just called
that, Coffee.
I would love to find her family if at all possible.
If anyone has a Coffey/Coffee family descendancy chart, I would love to have
a copy. I don't have anything on the Coffee family at all.
Thanks,
Nelda

According to my notes, Lewis may be a son of James Coffey. You might
want to search in Surry Co., and Stokes Co., NC. James was a constable
in Surry Co., in 1770's and perhaps into the 1780's. Lewis is thought
to have been born about 1798 in Stokes Co. and later was in Pulaski Co.,
KY where he married Delilar on Jan 11, 1818 (name is Levi in marriage
record). Lewis had at least one son, James Wilson, born in 1822. In
1827 they were in Morgan Co., IN.
According to records in Surry Co., NC, James was a native of
Pittsylvania Co., VA. As far as I know, his parents have not been
positively identified.
Another of my notes indicates that Lewis Moses Coffey was m 11 Jan 1818
to Delila, and that he was the son of Ambrose Coffey and Mildren Moore.
I think this information - re: Ambrose - is incorrect.
Good luck!
Jack

Wes, I apologize for the Ecard. That is my personal information.. It is
not an attachment.
I would be glad to share what i have on The Coffey, Pendley, And Fields.
Here is an interesting story about the coffey, Pendley's Fields, and
other in Pickens County Georgia. This is a True story and can be
research in the Atlanta News paper from that time Period.
A Man had to do,
What a man had to do!
Times were hard and a man with a large family had to take care of his
children most anyway he could.
I would like to relate to you a story from The Atlanta Newspaper from
around 1889. As told to the
Federal agents by John Coffey. John was granted immunity in exchange
for his testimony. After the
trial John left Georgia. It was said, he moved to Texas.
. In the 1890ties the reward system inspired a group of men to band
together for protection and retaliation. The group numbering about
twenty formed a secret society called, The Honest Man's Friend and
Protector. Later to be
called, The Pickens County Nightriders. They vowed to fight the
revenuers and to wipe out the spy
system by dealing out harsh justice to suspected informers. The
vigilantes were primarily from the
Sharp top Militia District in Pickens County and they swore to protect
each other and to keep their
business a closely guarded secret. " Death " was promised to any member
who broke the vow of secrecy.
For two years houses went up in smoke, suspected informers were
whipped and sometime shot and
entire families fled in terror as their houses were torched by a band
of men in bizarre disguises of
hoods, cloaks, masks and blacked faces. It was against this backdrop of
raiders and defender, spy and
counterspy, that The Honest Man's Friend and Protector over step their
bounds of the law once to
often. It all began on the morning of December 3, 1889. It was found
out that a trusted ally W. N.
("Nels") Ledford not only had he become an informer but had actually
led federal agents to moon
shine stills. Two letters had been sent to warn Ledford, but he had
ignored them. Now it was
discovered he was on his way to Atlanta to testify. Old Jack Landsdown
and his sons Seaborn and
Little Jack stuck out from their homes in a remote valley of Pickens
County near the Gilmer County
line. They went in separate direction but their mission was a common
one, to round up as many
members of The Honest Man's friend and Protector as they could find. The
Landsdowns needed help in
spreading the word and finding and enlisting as many members as
possible. They decided to first secure the aid
of Thomas and Eli Fields. Since the Landsdowns lived a little over a
mile from the crossroads
church, they scheduled a meeting in the churchyard later that
night. Eli and Thomas Fields,
Harrison Jones, Thomas Pendley, Tom Rowland , George Coffey,
Alexander Richard's, Marcus
Holbert, Arch Grizzle, John Forester and Mark Holbert. Mark Holbert
was sick and excused from
the raid. So the beginning of the end of our story unfolds. The
H.M.F.&P. Burned the home of Nels
Ledford, in so doing sealed the fate of their lives. Mary Ledford the
wife of Nels Ledford recognized
Old Jack Landsdown.
Old Jack Landsdown, Seaborn Landsdown, Harrison Jones and George Coffey
escaped from jail. Two months later they were found in North Carolina,
fought it out and Old Jack
Landsdown was killed. Some of the men never made it to court for lack
of evidence. John Coffey
related to George Coffey turned State witness. In exchange for
immunity for himself and George
Coffey testified against. Harrison Jones, Thomas Pendley, Thomas
Fields, Eli Fields, Eli Coffey,
Little Jack Landsdown, and Seaborn Landsdown. The Landsdown's
attempted another escape both
were killed. Thomas Pendley, Harrison Jones and the remaining men
all drew life in Prison.
Harrison Jones wrote a Poem," Many Men of Many Minds, Many Birds of
Many kinds. This Poem
is inscribed on his grave stone. Harrison Jones died after getting
pneumonia and being made to go
back into the coal mines to soon. He died in prison in 1890 he was 31
years old. Thomas Fields too
died of pneumonia under the same circumstances. Thomas Pendley was
released, as was Eli Coffey.
Coleman Jones, the Grandson of Harrison Jones, told me, "He
remembered Thomas Pendley
walking with baby steps after his release and continued to walk that
way until his death. This
Thomas Pendley was an uncle. Thomas was the Grandfather of Denny
Darnel, a very successful
Doctor in Tate Georgia. Many of the Pendley's Fields and Coffey's and
family's related, became Doctors, Ministers,
Judges, and School Teachers Many of whom still practice their
chosen trades In Pickens and
surrounding counties till this day.

Hello,
I am a fairly new addition to this list. I saw some very familiar
combination of names in this message from Sammy Pendley.
I show that Thomas Coffey and his wife, Nancy (last name unknown until
now) also had two other children:
John Coffey b 1796
Polly Coffey b 1799
also show Eleanor's b bet 1793-1794
However, this was information passed onto me, and I have not confirmed any
of it.
Sammy, can I have permission to add you Thomas Pendley information into my
