Martha, has your research for parents of your David Rice Coffey extended
into TN and AL? If not, may I offer a suggestion? David, Henry and John
all very common early Coffey names, but "Rice" was a little scarce. Not
my line and haven't researched them - but wonder if there could be a
connection to earlier generation of Rice and Sally (Bradford) Coffey, of
Bedford County, TN. One of their sons John Reid Coffey, born 27Mar1814, a
Colonel during the Mexican War, later became a General of Militia of
Alabama. General officers of those days usually were written about quite
a bit, perhaps the General even has an extensive biography in print
somewhere that might provide a lead for you, IF there were a link. Could
"Rice" have been a matronymic? It was very common back then, one might
say almost a rule, for a surname of an ancestress to be perpetuated as a
first or middle name in succeeding generations of her descendants, after
her surname was "lost" when she married. Maybe both "Rice"s have a common
denominator.
Best of luck in your search.
Spencer
