Recently, I have had a opportunity to view the Personal Property Tax Records for 1782-1799 for Hampshire and for 1788-1806 for Hardy Counties in VA. I was specifically looking for the Coffelt listings in those counties. It has been reported that Philip Coffelt (b. 16 FEB 1739) was in Hampshire Co from 1783 until the organization of Hardy County in 1786. Then, he appeared in Hardy Co from 1786 until 1794.
My findings on the tax records confirm what has been posted for Philip. However, for his sons, Henry and John, I found the following:
1) Henry’s earliest appearance on the tax rolls was in Hampshire Co in 1785. On that tax roll he was noted as “minor” as well as showing his tithe in the “Under 21” column. This contradicts conventional wisdom that Henry and John were both born on 13 Nov 1761. If this birth date were true, Henry would have been 21 on 13 Nov 1782 and would have appeared on the 1783 (and after) tax list as “Over 21”. This raises the question of the validity of the 13 Nov 1761 birth date. Does anyone know the source of this birth date?
2) John’s last appearance on my Hardy Co tax rolls was 1806. This is because the last date of the microfilm roll that I had ordered was 1806. Microfilm does exist for tax records after 1806, but I have not ordered them yet.
It is interesting that some researchers show that John continues to appear in the Hardy Co, VA Tax Lists through the year 1834. This seems quite possible. My findings somewhat contradicts the fact that John Coffelt, who married Elizabeth Roy in Greene Co, TN on 24 Oct 1805, was the son of Philip. It would certainly contradict this fact if John remained in Hardy County through 1834 as those researchers show. Records show that John and Elizabeth Coffelt were in Knox Co, KY by 1820 with John’s “Next Friend” and Elizabeth possible brother, Landy Roy. John Coffelt and his family could not be in Greene Co, TN/Knox Co, KY and in Hardy Co, VA at the same time. Greene Co, TN, marriage records show that the John who married Elizabeth Roy was the “son of Henry”. Perhaps this is the fact rather than error as many researchers show. Does anyone have any comments or views on this contradiction?
Ronny Roy
