I am sending the following for the second time. The first time I had not yet responded to the COFFELT-L confirmation email. So, I assume, I was not an official list member until I had responded. I apologize for the confusion and if anyone received the email twice.

Subject: Coffelt marriages in Green Co TN Early 1800's
Date: Wed, 6 May 2009 14:48:49 +0000
Hello List Members,
This is my first posting to the Coffelt List. However, I am a member of several other lists.
I do not have definite proof that I have a Coffelt ancestor as of yet. However, I have found some information that leads me to believe that my GGG-Grandmother was a Coffelt. Hopefully, further research will lead to definite proof.
I have found a marriage listing for Greene Co, TN that shows William RAY married Mary Anne COFFETT on July 2, 1801. I believe that this record shows my GGG-Grandfather, William ROY married Mary Anne COFFELT for the following reasons:
Many times RAY is mistakenly transcribed for ROY on these old records.
A William ROY is listed on the 1809 Tax List for Greene Co, TN
I know my William ROY was in Blount County in 1814, which places him in the vicinity.
William ROY’s oldest known son was born in the early 1800’s as he was married in 1819 in Blount Co, TN. (George ROY m. Elizabeth Huffman 20 Mar 1819) This would make the marriage date in line with George’s birth and marriage.
There were several other COFFELT marriages in Green Co, TN during this time including one for John COFFELT to Betsey RAY on 24 Oct 1805. This Betsey RAY has been shown to be Elizabeth ROY in the book "The Coffelt History Notebook" by Robert Coffelt. (I do not have the book. I cite this from the postings of others.) From this same source, the marriage bond for this marriage was signed by a Landy ROY. This tells me there were several ROYs in Greene Co, TN at the time.
Although, Mary Anne was listed as COFFETT, I have already experienced the many different variations of the surname COFFELT, COFFETT being one. It seems to me easy to make Coffett out of COFFELT simply by crossing both the “T” and the “L” together.
After appearing in Blount Co, TN for a short period of time, William ROY migrated to St. Francis Co, AR in 1827. He and who appears to be his second child James ROY (b. 1803 TN) appear on the 1830 Census there. George, William’s oldest son, migrated to Marion Co, TN, in abt 1820. Several other COFFELTs also made the trip from NE TN to Marion County. Before 1840, George’s family had joined William Roy in St. Francis Co, AR. George’s wife, Elizabeth, appears on the 1840 Census as the head of house. My assumption is that George has died.
If anyone can share any addition information on Mary Anne COFFELT, or any of the other C COFFELT s who appeared in Green Co, TN in the early 1800’s, please respond. Below is a list showing other COFFELT marriages in Green Co, TN during this period.
John Bible to Rebecca Coffett 12 Jul 1797
Coffel, James to Wyatt, Sarah 27 Aug 1796
Coffelt, Henry to Fare, Barbary 22 Dec 1804

I look forward to hearing from you.
Ronny Roy
