Hello All,
In response to some questions concerning our family DNA project, I will attempt to answer.
Those of us who have been researching for many years understand that there are times when we run into brick walls in our research. With the recently-added availability of the Y-chromosome DNA testing, there is another tool available to all of us who have interest in learning the origins of our early ancestry, and sorting family lines. DNA testing and matching can be used to exclude particular lines and individuals, and include others, although it cannot provide specific dates and places. But, It can provide proof of lines that are related - - - closely related, and distantly related.
When I chose to set up a DNA testing project for our family, I chose Family Tree DNA because of its significant experience in the field, and the fact that it is the company working with the National Geographic Society and IBM on the human genographic project, which is a world-wide investigation of the distribution patterns of the human race, tracked through DNA.
For details and information about DNA testing services, you can go to www.familytreedna.com. At the top, right, click on FAQ (frequently asked questions). That will answer many of your questions, and will lead you to links for signing up for a monthly newsletter which can be emailed to you, at no cost.
There are several tests available. For the Y-chromosome test, which is a surname study, only males can participate (as females do not carry the Y-chromosome). The tests vary by numbers of markers from twelve to sixty-three. For whatever test you might choose, please go to www.familytreedna.com and click on "Projects." On the top, right, you can enter the surname in which you are interested, and click on "Search." When the page for that name comes up, click on Swaner (underlined), scroll to the bottom of the order form and click on the arrow for "Types of Tests." You will see the prices offered through the "group rate", which are discounted approximately $50.00. Males can also include in their testing the mtDNA, which goes through the mothers line - - - mother, to mother, to mother, to mother. There is no discount for the mtDNA portion of the test. Females can be tested for the mtDNA, only - - - which goes through mother, to mother, to mother. And, there are no discounts for the female mtDNA.
If you are interested in helping to solve the problems remaining in our Coffelt family identification, please complete the order form and your test kit will be on the way to you within a couple of days. DNA is taken with cheek swabs. There is no blood work involved. In answer to questions about DNA testing for health problems and possible related privacy issues - - - this company does not participate in medical testing. Their testing is relationship, only.
If you do not feel comfortable placing your order for a kit yourself, you can send the basic data requested to me, and I can place the order for you. It will come to you with an invoice for payment, which must accompany the test kit when it is returned to Family Tree DNA. Remember, to participate in the surname project, you must carry the Coffelt surname, or suspect that you are a Coffelt genetically. If you so chose, you can be notified anytime there is a genetic match of another person tested. And, we will create a website for your viewing, so that you can track the progression of testing and matching in the sub-groups.
All Coffelt female descendants are welcome to be tested through this group, if you like, and we will also set up sub-groups for the female matches.
If you should not carry the Coffelt surname, but would like to help with the project, we encourage you to make a monetary contribution (any amount) to the project. You can send a donation to Family Tree DNA, and specify that your donation go to the Coffelt project. That money can help defray the cost for family members who are being tested, and who are upgrading their tests. Or you can "sponsor" someone else, by paying their fee for them.
You may have already noticed that if you start with the basic twelve marker test and wish to upgrade at a later date, by paying an appropriate additional fee (with no additional testing), your number of markers can be expanded. Of course, the tests with the higher number of markers are tremendously helpful in narrowing the number of generations with commonality. Sometimes, without the expanded number of markers, variances are missed.
Our primary goal of this project is to tie down our very early ancestors and learn their area/country of origin. It also will help us to identify the various branches of the family and their lines of descent.

I am looking for any information on William. He is on the 1900 census in Navarro county Texas. He married Bathsheba Talbot in 1904. They had two children. Bathsheba remarries in 1912. Family has no knowledge of what happened to him before 1900 or after 1907.
One of the newest tools available to genealogists utilizes DNA testing. These tests can help to solve long standing problems in tracking family lines and determining areas of origin.
In order to help solve the puzzles remaining in the Coffelt family ancestry, a DNA project has been established. The project is set up through Family Tree DNA, which is also working with the National Geographic Society and IBM on the human genographic project. Details are available at: www.familytreedna.com. For testing information, click on "Pricing", for the various tests from which to choose.
When ready to order a kit for being tested, click on "Projects'< then go to the search window in the upper right corner of the screen. Enter "Coffelt" and click on "project search. In the next screen, click on the Coffelt name, underscored. There will be a screen for ordering a kit for testing.
If I can help with answering questions, just let me know.
