We have a fascinating story Eleanor told her grandson about the time she and her son Edward were captured and held by Indians, and then escaped. Edward died on the way. If you'd like the full story, please send me your e-mail address. It's rather long.

Ron,
Thank you very much for the terrific and detailed information on the Coffelt family and the descendacy for Lafayette's line! I suspected that Rhoda divorced Myrick as I saw her name listed in district court index for Wapello County about 1871 although I have not been able to obtain verification on what that court action was. Edward Vinton Myrick was the son of Caleb and the name was Myrick although the Wyrick spelling I have seen used for Myrick.
I plan to obtain Lafayette's pension records when I can afford it. Thank you for confirming the date and place of Layette's death.
Rhoda Jane Martin was the daughter of David Luther and Sarah Ann (EVANS) MARTIN. I have more on her line if you are intersted.
Do you know of any living relatives to Lafayette's line that might have (and share) information on Rhoda's line? I have to scrutinize more closely the information you have sent. My eyeglases broke this morning and I am having difficulty without them, but I am sure enjoying and appreciate the fascinating details on the Coffelt's (old) correspondence and the migration/wagon train exodus! Thank you very very much. May I contact you more on the Coffelts off-line?
Vicky

Lafayette Coffelt was born ca 1841/1849 perhaps in Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa. He has been given as son of James Fillmore Coffelt born in Tennessee.
Who was Lafayette’s mother (James Fillmore Coffelt’s wife)?
Lafayette enlisted in Co H 8th Iowa Cavalry on 23 June 1863 in Albia, Monroe County, Iowa. He married Rhoda Jane (Martin) Myrick in Wapello County on December 4, 1872. Rhoda was first married to Edward Vinton Myrick in 1867 and they had two children Emma E. born 1869 Wapello (she married a Mr. Millgate) and Sarah M. born 1871 in Wapello.
Was Rhoda the widow of Edward Myrick or did they divorce?
Lafayette and Rhoda were in Pottawatomie County, Kansas in the 1880 census. Besides the stepdaughters Emma and Sarah Myrick, there were two Coffelt sons William (born 1874 Missouri) and Harry E. (born 1878 Iowa).
It appears that Lafayette died about 1897 in Kansas or Missouri. I would like to know:
When and where Lafayette and Rhoda Coffelt died.
Did they have more children and who did the children marry?
Who was Lafayette’s parents and any siblings?
I would like to connect with descendants and/or researchers of this Coffelt family.
Thank you.
Vicky
