I am not a Coffee descendant and thus not a Coffee researcher but I
am trying to identify the Elizabeth and Katherine Coffee who were sued
in 1751 by Cornelius Emans in Monmouth Co, NJ. They were sued
individually but several others were sued at the same time and all were
charged with having broken into the close, or pasture, and having trod
down the grass of Cornelius. No explanation is given for these actions.
Rebecca Romine appears to have been the widow of Christopher Romine
who died in Monmouth in 1748. Thomas can be documented to be her son.
The others are presumed to be siblings of Thomas and heirs to
Christopher. I am presuming that the squabble is concerning land
boundaries. The only land that Christopher Romine is known to have
owned in Monmouth Co was on the Manasquan River. I have found no deeds
for Cornelius Emans.
Does any one have a clue as to who Elizabeth Coffee and Katherine
might be? Is Katherine a daughter of Elizabeth?
The people sued in 1751 by Cornelius Emans:
Thomas Romine
Rebecca Romine
Layton Romine
Samuel Romine
Gertrude Romine
Thomas Matthews
George Parker
John Applegate
Elizabeth Coffee
Katherine Coffee, spinster
Thanks for any help you may be able to give.
