Jerry, the info below from your posting on the COFFEE list is not correct:
" The ancestors of Thomas Logan "Tom" Coffee, ranch foreman and cattleman
in the Texas panhandle are among the Coffey branch from Kentucky and were
descendants of Edward Coffey of North Carolina. That branch from Edward
Coffey also changed their surname to Coffee about 1800. Thomas Logan "Tom"
Coffee's descendants live in the Texas panhandle area and have a annual
family gathering in Amarillo Texas. "
The ancestors of Tom Logan Coffee are not from the Edward Coffey line. We
did come thru Kentucky and North Carolina, but are not descendants of
Edward. We just met last week in Amarillo at the 72nd Annual Coffee Coffey
Reunion. We are descended from John Coffee thru Logan Coffee who was the son
of James Coffee and Betsy Coffey both grandchildren of John Coffee. James
Coffee's father was Joel who married Martha Sealy Stepp, and Betsy's father
was Nathan who married Mary Saunders. James and Betsy were 1st cousins who
married, and Logan McMillon Coffee was their son, my gg grandfather. We
just had a dedication of a tombstone to Logan and his wife Mary Ragland Coffee
in May in Andrews Chapel, Lavaca Co, just outside of Hackberry, TX. Tom
Coffee and Mansel Coffee were brothers, sons of Logan and Mary.
Tom went to the Texas Panhandle first. My grandfather, Woodson Coffee (son
of Mansel), followed his Uncle Tom to the Texas Panhandle and worked for
him as a cowboy. The Coffee/ey name was changed in Logan's generation. His
Uncle William Saunders Coffey kept the "ey" spelling, as did WS's brothers
who stayed in Titus Co, TX, as William Saunders Coffey and his nephews
Logan Coffee, William Coffee, and Woodson Coffee came on down to Colorado Co,
TX and then later on down to Lavaca Co, TX. Logan was sheriff of Colorado
Co, Tx from 1854-1858.
The Texas Panhandle Coffee's are from John Coffee, (not the General).
Hope this helps with your Coffee information. Coffee's are a hard family to
keep track of, but is fun, and very addicting.
I would be glad to help anyone with the info we have on our family.
Best Wishes,
Kathy Coffee Simmons

Subject: Re: Check out Larkin Coffee b,1814 in Tenn.
I have heard of Larkin Coffee several times. He is not a descendant of
Peter and Susan nah Coffee that I am aware of.
He may be a descendant of Peter Coffee Sr. by way of some obscure lateral
branch. It is more likely that Larkin Coffee is a descendant of Edward and
Ann Ester (Powell) Coffey . Many of Edward (1676-1718) and Ann Ester
(Powell) Coffey 's descendants changed their name to Coffee around 1800 for
some unknown reason.
Holland Coffee (1807 - 1846) is a good example of the name change.
Holland Coffey changed his name to Coffee in 1818 after his father, Ambrose
Coffey (1762-1818) died. Ambrose Coffey and his first wife, Mildred Moore were
the parents of the Red River trader, Holland Coffee. Holland had thirteen
(13) siblings and six were brothers. Any of those brothers could have been
a ancestor of Larkin Coffee.
Historians, census takers or Holland himself could have changed his
surname to Coffee in 1818, after he moved from Pulaski County Kentucky to
McMinnville Tennessee to live with his uncle, Jesse Coffee. Edward Coffey
married Ann Ester Powell, who were the parents of John Coffey who married Jane
Graves; who was the daughter of John Graves and Hannah (unk,). John Graves
was the son of Francis (1630-1691) Graves and (unk.). It has been
recently determined by a noted genealogist Kenneth Graves, that Francis Graves
was the descendant of a different Thomas Graves and was not related to Capt.
Thomas Graves of the Jamestown Colony.
John Coffey (1700-1775) married Jane Graves and were the parents of James
Coffey (1729-1780) married Elizabeth Cleveland and were the parents of
Ambrose Coffey (1762-1818) married Mildred Moore and were the parents of
Holland Coffee (1807-1846) who married Sophia Auginbaugh-Suttenfield and they
had no children. Jane Graves was the daughter of John and Hannah Graves.
John Graves was was the son of Francis and Jane (McGuffey) Graves, his
second wife.
Elizabeth Graves (1741-1804) married Joshua Coffee, and were the parents
of General John Coffee of Tennessee who was the grandson of Peter and
Susannah Coffee. Elizabeth Graves was the g.g.g.granddaughter of Capt. Thomas
Graves (1580-1656) of the Jamestown Colony. Capt.Thomas Graves barely
missed the "Massacre of 1622" where Dr. John Woodson was killed. Dr. Woodson
was an ancestor of the outlaw Jesse Woodson James.
The ancestors of Thomas Logan "Tom" Coffee, ranch foreman and cattleman in
the Texas panhandle are among the Coffey branch from Kentucky and were
descendants of Edward Coffey of North Carolina. That branch from Edward
Coffey also changed their surname to Coffee about 1800. Thomas Logan "Tom"
Coffee's descendants live in the Texas panhandle area and have a annual family
gathering in Amarillo Texas.
The Catholic Church kept birth the records in Ireland and if you were a
Scots-Irish Protestant you did not have any record of birth. I suspect that
my ancestor, Peter Coffee Sr. (1705-1771) , spelled his surname Coffey in
County Donegal, Ulster, Northern Ireland where he was born until he sailed
from London to America in 1724. I have seen Peter's name spelled Coffee
and Coffey in the Sessions of London's Old Bailey and during the six months
he was incarcerated in Newgate Prison. Peter Coffee's name was probably
changed from Coffey to Coffee by the Old Bailey or by Jonathan Forward
after he was indentured and placed aboard Jonathan Forward's prison gally
"Forward" in October 1724 for the crossing to the American colonies.

After the Nine Years War, the Plantation of Ulster was occupied by
families from counties which had not taken part in the war. Those families
were neither removed or Anglicized.
The official plantation of Ulster consisted of County Donegal, Tyrone,
Armagh, Cavan, Londonderry and Fermanagh. This area also proved inviting to
Lowland Scots as well as Welsh and English, and Protestants from the
European continent. . This settlement continued well into the 18th century
and was only interrupted by the Catholic uprising of 1641 when dispossessed
Catholics slaughtered thousands of Protestants, an event that remains strong
in Ulster Protestant folk-memory. From 1688 through 1691, the Catholic
uprising was re-fought in the Williamite War.
Today Ulster is composed of nine counties: County Antrim, Armagh, Down,
Fermangh, Tyrone and Londonderry. Today, County Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan
are three Ulster counties that form a part of the Republic of Ireland.
Out of curiosity, I did some research on the Caldwell family since my
ancestor was associated with the John Caldwell Settlement in Virginia. The
Caldwells were Presbyterians who were originally from Lowland Scotland and
moved to Ireland in the middle 1600s. It is said by some historians that
they were descendants of Oliver Cromwell. The Caldwells moved to the
American Colonies while the colony was still under the Cromwell
Protectorate. Oliver Cromwell started the Scottish model of Presbyterianism
and his measures against Irish Catholics have been characterized as
genocidal. Cromwell's name is hated in Ireland today.
Charles Caldwell, the great grandson of the Presbyterian minister, John
Caldwell, was a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence from Mexico.
Charles Caldwell was known as the "Paul Revere of Texas" after he rode
from Gonzales to Goliad to warn of the approach of the Mexican army. Charles
Caldwell buried the granddaughter of the frontiersman Daniel Boone after she
was killed by Comanche Indians during the Linnville Raid on the Texas coast.
Charles Caldwell was born in Kentucky and moved to Missouri with Daniel
Boone's family and then Caldwell moved to Texas in 1835.

the use of indentured labor did not cease due to the Revolution, in
fact it continued and it also used former slaves well after the
Revolution. The indenturing of blacks in PA reached its height in
1790. I recommend To Serve Well and Faithfully, Labor and Indentured
Servants in PA 1682--1800, Sharon V Salinger, Heritage Books (1987)--
it is a small book, but packed with historical research.

There's a bit of geographical confusion here as to what lies where.
Donegal lies on the northwest coast of the Irish Republic. Cavan and
Monaghan are the two other counties of Ulster Province that are not
within Northern Ireland. Donegal and Armagh are not synonymous but
are quite separate places. Armagh is within Northern Ireland and the
name is sometimes incorrectly used to refer to all of Northern
Ireland.
It is always a temptation to assume that our suppositions are indeed
fact, but the fact is that they are not. Such putative data has a
way of running away with itself and replicating, thereby wreaking all
sorts of mischief. It would be helpful if such guesswork were
preceded by "it is likely that," or "in all probability," or even
just "I think."

Hello,
I have obtained most of my information second hand from other Peter and
Susannah Coffee descendants. As far as the location where Peter Coffee was
born, I can only take an educated guess that has been determined from where
other settlers in the Caldwell Cubb Creek Settlement were from. As you
know, the Catholic Church in Ireland kept birth records so there was no
birth record of a dissenter or a Protestant in Ireland during that period.
Therefore it cannot be precisely determined on what date, in which town,
county or parish someone of that religious persuasion was born.
County Armagh was part of the Ulster Plantation but Peter Coffey
could have been born in southern Ireland and his family forcibly moved to
the Ulster plantation by King James II and his Irish Jacobites. Many
dissenters and Presbyterian protestants were moved to Ulster in Northern
Ireland by King James II of England and some voluntarily came to the
American Colonies. James Caldwell, the father of John Caldwell, was
forcibly removed to County Donegal and became a official in Londonderry
during Derry atrocities committed by the papists of King James II.
John Caldwell, a Presbyterian minister who established the Caldwell
Cubb Creek Settlement , was born in Donegal in the Ulster, Northern Ireland
and the 200 settlers that were invited to settle in the Caldwell Cubb Creek
Settlement were also from the Ulster Plantation in Ireland. Many
Scots-Irish immigrants arrived in Prince William, King George and Stafford
County of the Virginia Colony in the early 1700s. Most of those Scots-Irish
Presbyterian immigrants were convicts who were serving their sentences as
indentured laborers. As the labor shortage grew worse in the new American
Colonies, convicts were brought to the American Colonies to harvest tobacco
for shipment to the new European markets for the product. The indentured
labor system in America ended in 1776 following the American revolution.
England then sent their convicts to Australia.
The counties around Dumfries in Northern Virginia and the dock on the
Quantico Creek Inlet on the Potomac River was to be called "New Scotland"
but Nova Scotia already had claim to that name. The prison galleys
"Forward" and "Pretty Patsie" operated by former slave trader and London
merchant Jonathan Forward, used the dock in the Quantico Creek inlet to
discharge convicts and return to England with casks of tobacco.
No doubt g.g.g.g.g grandfather Peter Coffee loaded his share of tobacco
casks onto Jonathan Forward's transport vessels before his seven year
sentence was up and before he married Susannah Mathews, the daughter of
William Mathews. Although a Protestant, William Mathews chose to immigrate
from southern Ireland to Northern Virginia at the end of the Williamite War
after King James II was deposed.

Have you checked out Glenn Lee's web site? He is a descendant of Thomas
Graves Coffee and has done extensive research on the Coffee family. Type in
your search field Glenn Lee's Family Tree and it should take you there. I
met Glenn in 1999 at the grave marking of Gen. John Coffee north of Florence,
AL. Betty.

Subject: Re: Check out Larkin Coffee b,1814 in Tenn.
I have heard of Larkin Coffee several times. He is not a descendant of Peter and Susannah Coffee that I am aware of.
He may be a descendant of Peter Coffee Sr. by way of some obscure lateral branch. It is more likely that Larkin Coffee is a descendant of Edward and Ann Ester (Powell) Coffey . Many of Edward (1676-1718) and Ann Ester (Powell) Coffey 's descendants changed their name to Coffee around 1800 for some unknown reason.
Holland Coffee (1807 - 1846) is a good example of the name change. Holland Coffey changed his name to Coffee in 1818 after his father, Ambrose Coffey (1762-1818) died. Ambrose Coffey and his first wife, Mildred Moore were the parents of the Red River trader, Holland Coffee. Holland had thirteen (13) siblings and six were brothers. Any of those brothers could have been a ancestor of Larkin Coffee.
Historians, census takers or Holland himself could have changed his surname to Coffee in 1818, after he moved from Pulaski County Kentucky to McMinnville Tennessee to live with his uncle, Jesse Coffee. Edward Coffey married Ann Ester Powell, who were the parents of John Coffey who married Jane Graves; who was the daughter of John Graves and Hannah (unk,). John Graves was the son of Francis (1630-1691) Graves and (unk.). It has been recently determined by a noted genealogist Kenneth Graves, that Francis Graves was the descendant of a different Thomas Graves and was not related to Capt. Thomas Graves of the Jamestown Colony.
John Coffey (1700-1775) married Jane Graves and were the parents of James Coffey (1729-1780) married Elizabeth Cleveland and were the parents of Ambrose Coffey (1762-1818) married Mildred Moore and were the parents of Holland Coffee (1807-1846) who married Sophia Auginbaugh-Suttenfield and they had no children. Jane Graves was the daughter of John and Hannah Graves. John Graves was was the son of Francis and Jane (McGuffey) Graves, his second wife.
Elizabeth Graves (1741-1804) married Joshua Coffee, and were the parents of General John Coffee of Tennessee who was the grandson of Peter and Susannah Coffee. Elizabeth Graves was the g.g.g.granddaughter of Capt. Thomas Graves (1580-1656) of the Jamestown Colony. Capt.Thomas Graves barely missed the "Massacre of 1622" where Dr. John Woodson was killed. Dr. Woodson was an ancestor of the outlaw Jesse Woodson James.
The ancestors of Thomas Logan "Tom" Coffee, ranch foreman and cattleman in the Texas panhandle are among the Coffey branch from Kentucky and were descendants of Edward Coffey of North Carolina. That branch from Edward Coffey also changed their surname to Coffee about 1800. Thomas Logan "Tom" Coffee's descendants live in the Texas panhandle area and have a annual family gathering in Amarillo Texas.
The Catholic Church kept birth the records in Ireland and if you were a Scots-Irish Protestant you did not have any record of birth. I suspect that my ancestor, Peter Coffee Sr. (1705-1771) , spelled his surname Coffey in County Donegal, Ulster, Northern Ireland where he was born until he sailed from London to America in 1724. I have seen Peter's name spelled Coffee and Coffey in the Sessions of London's Old Bailey and during the six months he was incarcerated in Newgate Prison. Peter Coffee's name was probably changed from Coffey to Coffee by the Old Bailey or by Jonathan Forward after he was indentured and placed aboard Jonathan Forward's prison gally "Forward" in October 1724 for the crossing to the American colonies.

None of this proves that Peter Coffee was born in Ulster or that he
was Presbyterian. Other than Maryland, there were no settlements
specifically for either Irish or Catholics but they inevitably
slipped through the cracks, there were simply too many of them.

There were 2 Gen. John Coffees. One was from TN and Alabama and was with
Gen. Jackson at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. He is my 4th great grand
uncle. There was also Gen. John Coffee from GA. They were first cousins and
contemporaries. Betty.
