I am sure Ethel Coffee is a descendant of John James Coffee. That line of my Coffee fmaily is buried in the Lorraine City Cemetery in Lorraine Texas.
John James Coffee (1833-1927) was my great grandfather Joshua David Coffee's (1839-1915) older brother. They came to Fannin County Texas in 1855 and settled in the Orangeville Community. Following the strife in the area after the civil war, John James Coffee moved his family to McDonald County Missouri in 1867. He retuned to Fannin County Texas about 1877. In 1878, John James and my great grandfather moved to Brown County Texas. John James Coffee married Nancy Lamberson in Fannin County in 1856. Joshua David Coffee married Mary Lou Blanton in Fannin County in 1860. In 1861, both men served in Col. H.E. McCulloch's 14th Brigade, Orangeville Home Guard, Texas State Troops. In July, 1863, when the Texas State Troops were called into regular Confederate service, Joshua David Coffee enlisted as a teamster in Capt. John Henry Damron's Company, Lt. Col. Peter C. Hardeman's 1st Texas Cavalry Battalion (Arizona Brigade) and was assigned to Brig. Gen. Richard Montgomery Gano's Texas !
Cavalry Brigade, C.S.A. Joshua served in North Texas and saw no action. In May 1864, Joshua Coffee was reassigned to Maj. James Roberson Diamond's Brush Battalion, Col. James Bourland's Frontier Regiment, C.S.A. Until the end of the war, Joshua Coffee remained at a bivouac near what was then called "Oxford Lake" in Collin County, 3-miles northwest of Farmersville, Texas.

I no longer believe that my Mary desended from Rice Coffee but the line that is called the Marshall Co. Tn Coffey's. Her father was Thomas Coffey N.C and mother Priscillia Evans Coffey. On the 1870 Bedford Co.census there is a Benjamin b. N.C. and Nancy Coffey. I now think this Thomas and Benjamin are brothers and that is where I am stuck
Any help would be appreciated
Betty
In response to Deborah Tower...
My line is from Joel, from Jesse Leonard.....

unfortunately my information is very very sketchy . I am a descendant
of his daughter, Perline Carpenter Estes (6/8/1827--3/1/1890);
William Carpenter died 5/26/1870 and according to family legend
(written in a Bible) was married to a Coffee or Coffey. If the dates
are correct, this could be worth pursuing. The Estes came out of
Virginia, through E. Tenn and into Mo where they settled. Whether
Perline Carpenter was born in TN or in VA is not known. Thanks

I have been gleaning a lot of information on these two families. Did JESSE COFFEE(Y) have a son named EPERSON? He may have beem killed in the War(1863) and was from Georgia. He is kin to the Coffees buried in Tennga Georgia(Murray Co.) Elisha is one of them.
His wife was Martha Elizabeth Stanford
His son was Floyd Hellvixon Coffee and Floyd had Clara Lavonia Coffee(died in TN) who was my father's grandmother. Just wondering if these folks are connected to the Virginia Coffeys and Coffeytown.
