Hoping to find descendants of Thomas and Rebecca BOWEN, my gr-gr-grandparents.
So far, I have never been able to find any descendants of any of their children, except my own great-grandfather, Thomas George BOWEN, b 1825 in Rutherford Co, TN; married 1845 in Coffee Co, TN; died 1882 in Phelps Co, MO.
Except: Thomas had one son, also Thomas Bowen, b ca 1858; by his second marriage to Frances Ann (Fannie) SPEARS in 1855 Coffee Co, after Rebecca's dieath in 1851. Within the last couple of years, I have found some of the younger Thomas's descendants. The younger Thomas mar Martha "Mattie" YOUNG. They apparently had one child, who was living with his maternal grandparents and an uncle in 1900, both Thomas and his wife, Mattie, having died prior to 1900. Thomas was still living in 1891, where he was listed on the Voters Registration List.
Thomas BOWEN (1799-1862) A minister of the M.E. South church.
Wife: Rebecca WALKUP (1801-1851)
Married in Rutherford Co, TN 1821
Both born in NC; resided in Rutherford, Cannon and Coffee Counties, TN;
both died in Coffee Co.
Children:
1. William M BOWEN, CA 1824
The only info I have on William is from 1850 Coffee Co census. I found
him there, with wife, Elizabeth, and son, Joseph; age 4 months. They
were no doubt married in the 1840s, but Coffee County marriage records
are not available for that perod.
2. Thomas George BOWEN, b 13 Apr 1825, Rutherford Co, TN; died Phelps
Co, MO 06 Feb 1882; mar Millie Level BROOKSHIRE 12 Dec 1846 (we have
that date from family info).
3. John W BOWEN,ca 1827, in Cannon Co, 1850; Coffee Co, 1860; in Gibson Co 1870. His age is approximated from census records, but it has varied on census records, so he may range in birth date from 1822-1826/27/
4. Martha J BOWEN, ca 1830. A Martha BOWEN mar Thomas L SHAW ON 06 Oct
1860 in Coffee Co. I don't have proof this is 'our' Martha, but it seems
likely.
5. M H (Mary?) BOWEN, CA 1835. A Mary H BOWEN mar W R HOWARD on 10 Oct
1855 in Coffee Co. Same as above: I don't have proof, but it is
probable.
6. James BOWEN, ca 1838. He may have been married by 1860 and may have
had a son, James, b ca 1859. He and a one year old James were living with brother, John W. Bowen in 1860 Coffee Co; however, John has a 4 year old James in 1870. I believe both he and John may have served in the Civil War, but I have no other info on James. I found a marriage of J W BOWEN to Martha JONES on 13 Aug 1868 in Coffee Co. With only initials to go by, it is difficult to say who this is. I don't know what James's middle name was, and I believe there was another John W(?) BOWEN in the county about then, so this may be another BOWEN family.
I compiled these siblings from the census records. There may, or may
not, have been others, who were born and died between the 10 year census
dates. Without a family record, which I've always hoped I would find in
the possession of another descendant, we can't know. If they did not,
they were lucky not to have lost any children during that time period.
If William was the age indicated in 1850, it is quite likely there was
another child older than he.
