Jack,
We have just returned from a visit to Lavaca County, TX. Now I have proof
that the Mary Coffee in William's Cemetery, 1 mi west of Hackberry, is not Mrs
Logan Coffee. Mrs Logan Coffee is buried in Andrews Chapel. If anyone wants
to know the details, I would be glad to share. I have also taken some new
photos of the tombstone I would be glad to share. If anyone knows who the Mary
Coffee is in Williams Cemetery, please email me. The Catherine Coffee Williams
in Williams Cemetery is daughter of William Sanders Coffey, b. 1795, uncle
of Logan Coffee, b 1809 who were neighbors in Lavaca, Co, TX.
Thanks for all your help.
Kathy Coffee Simmons.

Yeah, it wouldn't surprise me at all that someone would attempt to change family info, either to protect themself, or to join some lineage society.
Since Rice is a descendant of Edward Coffey and Ann Powell, anyone testing DNA with the same descent will show as a descendant of Edward. The person being tested will then have to show who in that line between he and Edward his ancestor.
Since you already know that your husband is a descendant of Rice, then his DNA test should prove that.
Jack

I need to correct a mistake I made in my previous message on my NC counties.
Elizabeth Fields Berry took her son, Franklin, left Albemarle Co. VA where her husband Bradley Berry lived, and went to Wilkes Co. NC where her brother, Thomas Fields and his wife Elizabeth Coffee, lived. William C. was born in 1796 and he writes that when he was thirteen they left Wilkes Co. and moved to Buncombe Co. NC.

Hi, Jack,
The William Coffee Berry day book entry that Rice Coffee was the acknowledged father of William and his sister, Mary, came to our attention at a family reunion by a relative who'd done extensive research on the family. She had a copy of that particular entry.
William was a Baptist minister at the time of keeping this day book and I can't see any reason he would have written this if it were not true.
I looked at Bradley Berry, the husband of William's mother, Elizabeth Fields, and according to the day book and to the will of Bradley Berry in VA, Elizabeth left Bradley and took their child Franklin to Buncombe Co. NC where she had family who were married into the Coffees.
Both William and Mary were born in Buncombe Co. NC and Bradley Berry died in VA and his will was probated there leaving his estate to his grown children by a first wife and Franklin is mentioned also.
A DNA test may clear all this up. I've learned that there is a genetic marker for Rice Coffe's line.
I'd be very glad to share all the info I have, including copies of that day book entry, even though a relative tried to erase this particular line in the book, and photos of William Coffee Berry.
So, stay tuned for the results of the DNA test!
Rose
