Re: Catherine Demasters/Reuben Lee Campbell (Parents of Charles Palmer Campbell)
Carol--
Question--in your "Saga" you state:
There was another Jesse DeMasters usually shown as Jesse K. DeMasters born 1835 who married Elizabeth "Betty" DeMasters 1859 in Augusta Co. This Elizabeth/Betty was a sister of the above mentioned Jesse and Catherine, children of John & Mary. The father of Jesse K. DeMasters b 1835 was James DeMasters, this from Jesse's marriage record. This Jesse K. DeMasters also enlisted at Massies Mill on the same day as the other Jesse, however this one was discharged in 1862.
I wonder if Jesse K.'s parents were James and Elizabeth Tilford Demastus???? The time frame would be right. James and Mary (?) Demastus of Revolutionary time would have been too old to be his parents and I show that their son Jesse married Easter Horn and had three children none of whom were named Jesse. James and Elizabeth Tilford Demastus are of the right ages to have had a children born 1835 and 1838. James was born in 1785 which would have made him 50 - 53 when Jesse and Mary Katherine were born; Elizabeth would have been 49 - 52. I would presume that Jesse K. and Mary Katherine were their youngest children. This would also make sense because of the marriage traditions of the time where cousins married cousins. Jesse K. and Elizabeth would have been first cousins as their fathers were brothers (James 1785 and John 1796).
What do you think of that theory? Is there anyone you know of that we might confirm this with???

I have a couple of Demasters Rev. War pension apps posted at
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~coffeycousins/Text_Files/
This will take you to one of my web pages with a number of Coffee/y
documents that can normally be reached through
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~coffeycousins/text.html
However, the two Demasters files have not yet been listed on the text.html
page so you'll have to go directly to the folder (first link above), then
look for the Demasters files. They are in PDF format.
The file on John Demasters contains a copy of (apparently) a Bible page
listing the birthdates of John and Martha Moran Demasters children, as well
as those of John and Martha. Further into the document is a typewritten
page dated 1939 that might also be of interest.

Okay Carol--
Where to start??? Based on your most recent message it would appear that
the Catherine you say was married to Reuben Lee Campbell is one and the same
as Mary Katherine who married George Washington Coffey. I have compared her
siblings against those I have to the John and Mary Anne "Polly" Coffey
Demasters (d/o of Edmund F. & Elizabeth Burgher Coffey) and they are all the
same. I only have a DOB for her, no DOD unfortunately. My information has
come from family members old enough to have known her and passed down
through the generations via bible records. I have never seen anything to
indicate that she had ever been married to anyone other than George
Washington Coffey. As I understand it, the family land located in Chicken
Hollow that has passed through 7 or 8 generations actually belonged, at one
time, to the Demasters/us family and was part of an original land grant from
Revolutionary War time period. When John and Mary died the land was divided
between the children and when Catherine died it passed into the Coffey
family.
However, I don't believe that the Catherine married to Reuben Campbell is
the same as Mary Katherine (d/o John and Mary Anne Coffey Demasters, d/o
Edmund F. and Elizabeth Burgher Coffey) for several reasons. First, you
indicated that the Catherine married to Reubin died in 1856. This doesn't
jive with my date for Mary Catherine who was born abt 1839, married G. W.
Coffey 11/1/1856 and had a total of 10 children the youngest of which was
born in 1880. I'm thinking that the other John Demasters married to a Mary
(?) that I have is possibly a better match. That info is as follows:
1 John Demastus
.. +Mary (?)
........ 2 Jesse Demastus 1841 -
............ +Marletia Coffey 1843 -
The only common denominator I see that might tell us who was related to who
is possibly Jesse Demastus (who would have been Catherine's brother) since
my Mary Katherine also had a brother by that name born about the same time.
That info is as follows:
1 John Demasters 1796 - 1870
.. +Mary Anne Coffey 1806 - 1879
........ 2 Jesse Demastus 1838 -
............ +Bettie (?)
................... 3 Luke C. Demastus 1860 - 1920

What do you think of this argument????? Maybe someone else out there can
shed some light on exactly who Catherine's parents of John and Mary Anne
