As I stated at the beginning, this is "pass-along" information. I have no documentation or source for the information that I listed. I merely sent it with hopes it might give leads or direction to sources of documentation. My only interest is in Polly Gardner, Ambrose's third wife to hopefully answer a question of "why my ancestor, Alexander Holmes, would take out a loan and put up his land for colateral." As a researcher to help solve the discrepancy of the mother of Christopher Greenup, I would check marriage records of Ambrose and Elizabeth Rice with the birth of Christopher, if it is known. I don't know the birth but I have April 19, 1861 (no source) as his death. Again, marriage records for Pulaski Co. KY should be your answer. Any background information about Polly (Gardner) Coffee would greatly be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Mike, Thanks for the info on Ambrose. You have some that I don't. Where did you get that Ambrose married Elizabeth Rice in 1812 and Polly Gardner in 1818? His estate settlement lists his wife Polly and that was the first I had heard of her. I found a marriage with Lucinda Day in 1812, but now am confused. Who was she? He had a child with his second wife named Christopher Greenup Coffee and another named Emily Coffee. I don't know where the Greenup came from. My descent is from George Washington Coffee.

Mary, I will share with you some "pass-along" information (not documented) about Ambrose Coffee. Ambrose born 1762 in Ablemarle Co. VA; died September 1818 in Pulaski Co. KY; married to Mildred Moore on Oct. 10, 1779 (probably in KY); 2nd married Elizabeth Rice in 1812; 3rd married to Polly Gardner in 1818 just before his death. He had the following children: James Madison, America, Hiram, Lewis Moses, Alice, Myra, Elizabeth, Thomas Jefferson, Holland, George Washington. Ambrose is not in my direct line of ancestors. My connection comes from his third wife's connection to my Holmes line. It seems that my descendant, Alexander Holmes, took out a loan "in favor of Polly Coffee" and put up some of his land for surety. I have researched for some time to find a connection to Polly and my Holmes line. If you have information to share in this regard or other Pulaski Co. KY Holmes or McCaw information, I would be very grateful.

In going over census records I find, in 1810, an Ambrose Coffee in both Pulaski and Montgomery counties. My Ambrose died in 1818 in Pulaski County. In 1820 there is still an Ambrose in Montgomery county. Does anyone know who he is? Also, in 1810, there are a lot of Coffees in Columbia county. Does anyone know the relationship?
Thanks, mj
