Andrew Jackson Coffee. Brevet Lt Col is my gg grandfather. He is the son of
Gen John Coffee of TN & AL. Gen Juhn died in 1833 when AJ was a teenager. He
had a guardian appointed. He went to West Point at age 15.(1837) He was asked
to leave because he was Deficient in conduct. He returned to the Point but
resigned again. I don't know how he reentered the Army and received his
commission. He was in the Regular Army not a volunteer.I checked with West
Point about his staus. He has cadet number x1841 not a Cullum number.
He was on General Zachary Taylor's staff in the Mexican American war 1846-47.
General Taylor appointed him Brevet Lt Col at the battle of Buena Vista.
John "Jack" Coffee Hays is a whole story by himself. He is in the Texas
Ranger Hall of Fame .Texas A&M University Library has lots of information on
him.
Andrew Jackson Coffee and "Jack" Coffee Hays are second cousins. The
relationship is through the Donelson line. If you picked up the brochure at
Mountain View you will Hays as one of their distinguished guests.
There are nine people buried in the Coffee plot at Mountain View Cemetery. I
have gg grandparents and g grandparents there. Two of the internees are
Indian. It is said that AJ brought them back with him because they were
orphaned. Have not found any thing to fill in the details. I keep looking.

Where are you?
I was walking though Mountain View Cemetery, in Oakland, CA., the other day, and found the grave and marker for a Andrew Jackson Coffee, Born 1819, in Tenn, died March 12, 1891, in Oakland, wife Elizabeth, who died in 1913. On the marker it stated that he was a Brevet Lt. Col., in the U.S. Army. In the stories on his life, printed when he had died, it stated that he was from Tenn., had gone to West Point, not sure if he graduated, or not for one paper said that he did, the other said that he left early. But anyway, he did serve in the U.S. Army, in the Mexican American War. Later coming out to the Oakland, CA. area, where he owned a large part of early Oakland. One of the people that owned the land with, was John "Jack" Coffee Hays, who is also at Mt. View Cemetery, he was also from Tenn., and was early Texas Ranger, and the first Sheriff of San Francisco, and again a large owner of land in early Oakland. So I am wonder if they were related. George

Hi List,
I have a picture with a note that says "Coffee House, Cairo Illinois." There is a beautiful old Victorian (?) house on the front of a postcard. I have no idea if someone was referring to the Coffee surname or a coffee house. Does this mean anything to anyone on this list? Is anyone researching the Coffee family in Cairo?

That was Gen. John Coffee of TN and AL. He was at the Battle of Horseshoe
Bend with Gen. Andrew Jackson. This John married Mary Donelson, neice of
Rachel Donelson Jackson, wife of Andrew Jackson. At the Battle Field they
have pictures of John and Andy and say they are brothers-in-law. Betty.

He was a general in the GA malitia. He was elected to congress. Would you
care if I forward your message to his 3rd (I think) great grandson? He can
give you more information than I can. Betty.

Gloria,
This is what I have in my notes about Gen. John E. Coffee, son of Peter
Coffee, Jr and Sally Smith:
Gen. John Coffee was famous as a trail blazer and Indian fighter.
He was a general in the State Militia during the Creek War.
He was a representative from Georgia in Congress. {1833 - until his death in
1836} He died on the day he was elected for a second term. [Another account
says that he died on a Monday but was re-elected the Friday before. Thus, he
became the only dead man ever elected to Congress!]
Coffee County, Georgia named after him.
His body removed to McRae Cemetery, McRae, GA in 1921
Eleanor Colson
Who was the one in GA? I know that John Coffee from Florence, AL owned land
down in the delta of Mississippi. I didn't know anything about the other
John Coffee.
He defeated the Creek Indian nation, was a congressman from GA, and active in state politics. His history is well documented. Should find something on web, or in your local library.

I stand corrected. I am descended from Gen. John Coffee of TN and AL. I
correspond with descendants of the other Gen. John Coffee of GA. Sorry.

That is my Coffee line. I am descendant of John's older brother Thomas Graves
Coffee who married Mary Knight. The lived at the mouth of Blue Water Creek,
Center Star, Lauderdale County, AL. Appreciate any information you have.
Especially if husband has a neice or sister named Dorothy Snoddy. Betty.
The Coffee's that my husband is related came from the famous General John
Coffee.
I'm not sure if your Coffee's are related to him. If they are, we have the
almost complete line of this family. Gloria
There were two "famous" Gens. John Coffee, and they were first cousins. One is more associated with TN and AL while the other is associated with the state of GA.
